Then we had a few patches of clearer skies. And it's back snowing again now. Let's changeable conditions. Summit lifts are on hold. You may know about a ski area called Nakayamatoge. It is only a small place, on the Nakayama Pass between Sapporo and Niseko. Quite a while back it used to be open throughout the winter, but at some point started only being open in the very early season and the spring season. And since the 2023-2024 season it has only opened for the spring season. The early season thing seemed to be getting... difficult (in terms of snow). Anyway, operation info for this season has been released - or at least noticed by me - and they plan to open from 1st April, hoping to continue until 10th May. I haven't been there for a while, but I hear it has (at least traditionally) been popular for the park. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Base -6°C, 5cm snowfall, calm. Isobars are slightly narrow with light snow and winds of 10-12 m/s over the mountains and the sea. Winds decreased after reaching 22 m/s at 2:00 AM. Cornice and snowdrift development on the west side of the mountains at 800 m elevation, forming wind-packed snow slabs up to 100 cm thick on the leeward side. Observations indicate the snowpack is consolidated and stable, but be careful on cornice slopes around 1100 m and on steep, open slopes. There is a possibility of 50cm surface avalanches with skiing stimulation. All gates are expected to be open. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. There is no safety in the mountains. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. Your cooperation is important. Do not traverse under cornices, ride the fall line as much as possible, and avoid skiing simultaneously. Do not duck ropes. The snow is not bad. Is your beacon switched on? Have a good day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . At the moment we have some light snow flurries and light winds here in Nozawa Onsen. Testing the conditions out this morning we have some fun riding on offer at the top area of the mountain. There is about 10-12cm of fresh and the base layer isn't too icy either; at least in the Yamabiko area. As you ride to the lower half you will notice there are decreasing amounts of fresh and it is quite icy as well. Therefore it is best to stick to the top half today. The resort is reporting about 3cm of snow since yesterday. Visibility is variable this morning as clouds move over the peak. At times ok, otherwise poor. There are some fantastic ice coated trees across the mountain, worthwhile taking the camera to capture the spectacle. Unfortunately yesterday morning's snow showers did not last, and it turned into rain at about 1pm. Thankfully the top half escaped being hit with the liquid snow so damage is limited to down on the lower slopes of the mountain. The poor conditions forced most people indoors so the slopes were very un-crowded. We expect snow showers to continue today and the next day and the next day and so on. All in all we expect cold temps snow showers of varying intensity to last until next Tuesday. Heavier dumps are expected tomorrow, Friday night and Sunday night. A lot of potential looking at the forecast. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It was great to see that snow yesterday. This morning it's fine and sunny. It is a beautiful morning up top, even though early things look more foggy for the moment. That will surely clear quite quickly. We did get some more snow since my early morning report yesterday (recorded in this report). Still, the ski area obviously doesn't feel enough snow in the upper areas to open yet. The next snow is still forecast from around the middle of the coming week. Hopefully, the ski area will be open by this time next week. Yesterday, a safety prayer ceremony (安全祈願祭) was held by officials at the ski area. There are all sorts of formal things going on. It's a bit of a special year, being the 100th anniversary of the opening of the ski area. Very cool. It is a good reminder of how much history there is in this special place. Nozawa Onsen ski area will open as soon as there is enough snow. We had fine weather yesterday, which was a lot of fun - but that lingering feeling that it was too warm (for mid-February). Still on the mild side but wet snow is falling on this national holiday morning. At a decent rate, too, actually. The coming weekend is going to be quite mild throughout the region. Temps are probably going to get into low positive numbers. Again, not something we expect for now. Hopefully it'll just be a blip and we can get back to mid-winter beyond that. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I could hear the rain during the night (a sound that seems to wake me up....drip, drip, drip off the eaves). By early morning, though, that had turned to snow, which is now falling nicely (a little wet and cohesive but it’s solid water, not rain!). Happy National Foundation Day, by the way, the date when the first emperor, Jimmu, ascended to the throne in 660BC, and the date of the establishment of the Meiji Constitution, when the emperor rose in power and Japan started its true modernization. In today’s terms, hopefully that means more Japanese out on the slopes today! One of the ski school heads here told me that they are way down on lessons for Japanese guests; come on locals! I am happy to report that it is snowing nicely as I write this report, with over 5cm on the top of my car overnight and visibly around 5-10cm around the neighbourhood. It might be more moist than the lightest and fluffiest, but very welcome all the same. Currently about 0C. Tsugaike seems to reporting 'about 35cm' of snowfall which certainly sounds good. The ski area is reporting 0cm of fresh, but I've got 5cm to report. Snow falling now and limited visibility outside. Would be good to get a fresh layer out of today because from tomorrow there's sunshine expected along with a bit of a warm-up at the weekend. Some surrounding lower areas are getting some rain at the moment. Let's avoid that! It's a national holiday so expect places to be busier than normal for a weekday.
