We also have fresh snow, varying depending on where you are but I'd say 10-20cm is representative after driving up to Kumanoyu earlier on. It is still snowing so hopefully we'll get some more. Yakebitaiyama were reporting 15cm very early morning. The wind might still affect some lifts this morning and there is some limited visibility out there. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It's great to be able to report a good layer of fresh snow this morning. The ski area is saying that there has been 30-35cm of fresh on upper areas of the mountain. (They're not reporting any from base, but my measurement is 26cm (almost the same as the Japan Meteorological Agency data). Nice. Side note: I noticed on the Yuzawa Now report this morning how ski areas aren't generally reporting new snowfall numbers this season. It's definitely a thing. I have noticed the Nozawa website isn't updated as much as it used to be in that respect. It is something I look at twice every day, so it's something I have noticed. I wonder if it is just simply a 'struggling with staffing' kind of issue (which seems to be another widespread phenom). Too much to ask Naski to do the updates, of course... OK, well, we should expect clearer conditions and sunshine for much of the following three days and some milder conditions over the weekend. Can we perhaps get back to snow again beyond that? The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. It continues to snow this morning but visibility seems fairly decent in most areas. I think we were all expecting more snow than we got, looking at the forecasts yesterday. Clearer skies ahoy come Monday. Hopefully it will keep nice and cold so we can get to enjoy all the snow. There's more out there than the official snow depth numbers hint at. Talking about numbers... One thing I always find a bit weird with ski areas here is how some report snowfall 'since last night', rather than 'since the last time we reported'. Doing that, it feels like they are always missing a chunk of snow off their numbers. Perhaps they don't realise how people follow the numbers so keenly. And perhaps most people don't. But I find these things endlessly interesting, so it seems a bit odd to me that they don't make more of the numbers. That isn't just Shiga Kogen either. It seems to be a Japan thing. (Or is it a generally accepted 'world' thing?!?) By the way I'm not saying numbers that are put out there are 'incorrect' (would always avoid such an accusation --- I know what it feels like!) The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello and Happy Christmas! It has been snowing, but this morning as I write this, it is getting quite bright. Thankfully, less windy than yesterday too. The snow was blowing around so it's difficult to put a number on it - one of those days when there's more/less in different places. The easing off just now probably won't last long with more heavy snow is due tonight. More ski areas and ski lifts in Shiga Kogen are now open. The following ski areas are still not open (according to official site as I write this): Sun Valley, Hasuike, Higashidateyama, Tannenomori Okojo, Terakoya and Ichinose Yamanokami. All of the other ski areas are now at least part open. With most areas opening now, I will continue to check and update the snow depth numbers for a selection of the larger ski areas in Shiga Kogen. From time to time. (Don't expect lots of daily movement with those - traditionally they don't change much even with lots of snow). The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The snow isn't giving up just yet it seems! A few cm yesterday morning and while no new snow this morning it is keeping cold. Just a light wind and cloud this morning in Zao. Even so, we're really getting short on supply of snow now even on the top course of the mountain which is now bare in places. There's no skiing or boarding down to base, and you need to get the ropeway lifts down. It's all getting very limited now. Can it last until May 6th?! At the same time, quite busy with Golden Week tourists as well as the skiers and snowboarders. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . With sprinklings of snow on the upper parts of the mountain even into May, 2012/2013 has been an odd season in some respects. I'd say it has been a good one, though not a classic. Reading through the reports from November onwards, there have been ups and downs and I feel one of the things this season has been how it has kept cold in April and even now at the end of the season, especially after things seemed to warm up somewhat in March in many areas of Japan. The ski lifts that remain open will be operating until the end of tomorrow, Monday 6th May. After that, maintenance aside, the Ropeways all operate throughout the year in Zao and there's lots of hiking and of course onsen to enjoy. A good place to come and escape the heat of the summer as well. As I need to be making my way from the area later today, this will be the last Zao Now post of the season. I hope that you have enjoyed reading the reports from Zao each day this season. Hope even more that you were able to get to Zao and enjoyed it. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Not a huge amount of snow since yesterday and probably no more than 5-10cm on the slopes. Down in the village just a few cm in the end but it is snowing again this morning and cloudy/foggy out there with poor visibility. A moderate wind but all lifts are operating as planned. It's the annual big festival in Zao Onsen this coming Saturday. Snow statues are in the process of being build around the village in preparation for the event. There'll be torchlit skiing, performances, fireworks and, as they say, much more. The main event is from 7:30pm until 8:30pm in the Uwanodai course area with a special stage area made just for the event. Should be fun.
