- Yuzawa Now: Saturday 22nd February 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this seas 1111cm Posted on Saturday 22nd February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snowfall was generally less intense yesterday with an additional 11cm to report (only a sprinkling overnight). It is now snowing at the moment, but probably will be before long. Indeed the day started off with some light blue skies, but we have cloud cover now. GALA Yuzawa is due to be back open this morning, though the Southern Area will not be opening. Yesterday was the first time ever that they decided not to open due to the amount of snow! Kagura should also be open but the top Kagura Number 5 romance pair lift will be closed and other lifts might be delayed. Maiko Snow Resort is also experiencing some early morning delays. Other ski areas seem to be planning on opening with perhaps some delays and changes to operations. As always, check before heading out. Snow clouds might still be giving us fresh snow through until Monday. And then clear skies due from Tuesday. This weekend is usually another busy one as Monday is a national holiday. It will be interesting to see if places are particularly busy, or if the heavy snow (and associated issues) has put some people off... ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 22nd February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 23rd February 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this seas 1139cm Posted on Sunday 23rd February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It might not have been as intense, but we have still received another 28cm of snowfall since the last report yesterday morning. About 18cm of that arrived overnight. That brings February 2025 observed snowfall at base up to 511cm - a new record for the month of February since we started recording data in these reports in 2012-2013. The total snowfall for the season so far is now at 1149cm. The record so far is the 2021-2022 season when the total at the end of the season was 1338cm. All of this data and much more detail here. (If you are going to quote our data elsewhere, please mention SnowJapan.com when doing so). OK, so it is still snowing this morning. Just lightly at the moment. (Might it even stop?! At the moment it feels like it might never stop!) It still looks like the snow madness will be over from Tuesday onwards, but we should expect some more snow before then. If forecasts are correct, probably on fairly modest amounts. Forecasts all also show some nice sunny weather in the week starting from Tuesday along with much milder temperatures. Here's the 'ski areas dealing with lots of snow' news for the morning, as far as we can tell as of 8am: The Kagura Number 5 top lift will be closed and other lifts might be delayed, but otherwise Kagura looks set to open. The Prince Number 1 gondola, Number 8 quad and Takenokoyama top lift at Naeba are closed. The downhill run at Yuzawa Kogen will not be available. The quad lift and upper pair lift on the hotel side at NASPA will be closed until Friday (28th). ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 23rd February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 24th February 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this seas 1156cm Posted on Monday 24th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we got to enjoy some spells when clouds parted and we saw some blue sky and sunshine, but the snow clouds soon get back to doing their thing and giving us more fresh. As a result, another 17cm to report since yesterday morning. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 15cm fresh overnight. Talking about that ski area, a friend of mine headed out to Maiko yesterday morning (before 10am) and was turned away... the car parks were completely full. Other popular ski areas were very busy too, as you might expect on the middle day of the long weekend. Today might still be busy (national holiday) but probably less so, particularly in the afternoon. Right now there are a lot of very tired people around. Some need to get up early to shovel themselves out of their homes in a morning, only to help out (or it be part of their work) with similar duties during the daytime... and then do some more when they get home. Everything takes more time. It has been pretty relentless this month and in such times it is not the easiest day-to-day routine. Lift closures, busy lines and the like can be annoying for visitors, but the people working for the ski areas are doing their best to cope. (Ski areas don't close lifts on busy national holidays for fun. They want them open). Please try to give them a smile, it might help them through the day! :) Oh yes, it is still snowing (lightly) this morning. But after all these days of continued snowfall, it really is going to stop sometime soon - either later today or overnight. From then, we can expect at least a handful of days featuring quite a lot of sunshine and milder conditions. (If the forecasts are right, of course). ----------------------- Ski area information for Monday 24th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 25th February 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this seas 1175cm Posted on Tuesday 25th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 11am update: The early morning clouds did indeed clear, to leave us with lovely clear skies. The mountains look so beautiful this morning! It is just under +3C in town at 11am. Yuzawa Kogen is closed today as they see to some kind of electrical problem. Original early report: It has to be early report this morning (too early for news from ski areas). Yesterday the snow continued for large parts of the day, though we did get a few spells of clearer skies and sun again in the afternoon. Snowfall eased off overnight leaving us with another 19cm of snowfall since the report yesterday. Today should be the start of a real break in the snowfall - to the relief of many! - with not much chance of snow (or much anyway) into next week. Perhaps some later tomorrow. We are expecting some milder conditions as well this week, particularly around Friday and the weekend. Early on this morning the skies are mostly cover by cloud, but the cloud is expected to part and leave us with sunny skies within a few hours. Today it might get up to around 4 or 5C in town. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 25th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 1177cm Posted on Thursday 27th February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We had some fine weather yesterday morning, even with some light snow falling at times especially higher up. Clouds took over later on and then we got some rain / sleet / snow. What you got depended on where you were. We are still due some sun later on today, perhaps within a few hours, but we start the morning with cloudy skies and some light (wet) snow falling. There is a few cm to report, too. Forecasts for tomorrow are rather mixed too at the moment, ranging from lovely clear skies to a more cloudy day. Saturday still looks likely to be clear and sunny, along with some warm temperatures (perhaps getting up to and beyond 10C in town). Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway and the top section of that ski area is back open today, and the top lift at Kagura is also due to be moving. At the weekend it was looking like this week would be one of continued clear and skies every day but it isn't quite turning out that way. It seems the weather is proving hard to predict at the moment. The Quest Park at GALA Yuzawa (located by the side of the quad lift in the Northern Area) is scheduled to open from Saturday 1st March. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 27th February 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Friday 7th March 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this seas 1208cm Posted on Friday 7th March 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We have actually had some decent snowfall overnight and early this morning. (It's not the wet/sleet kind of mix that we got yesterday). As of 7:50am, it is snowing quite heavily and our measurement is 15cm of fresh snowfall. Nice! Maiko Snow Resort reported 10cm just a little earlier. With the snow coming down hard, visibility is quite poor at the start of the day. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed due to strong wind forecasts and, as of early morning, Kagura via Mitsumata is open up to the Kagura Gondola. The top area of Yuzawa Kogen is closed this morning (due to wind) and as such the Landau Ropeway connecting that ski area with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is closed. (But all of GALA is open). The heavy snowfall is expected to ease off fairly soon this morning and then stop by this afternoon or this evening at the latest. Once it stops, there's not much more snow showing up on forecasts. Tomorrow might be largely cloudy, with the sun due to make some major appearances on Sunday and Monday. ---------------------------- Ski area information for Friday 7th March 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 8th March 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this seas 1217cm Posted on Saturday 8th March 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow continued falling on and off in the region through yesterday and into night-time, with another 9cm to add to this report. It is a cloudy and cold early morning with some forecasts saying there is a chance that the sun might appear this morning. As of 7:15am, there are hints that might be the case. (Other forecasts say it will just be cloudy for the day). Milder conditions and a higher chance of clear skies from Monday. All ski areas seem set to open at normal times this morning. NASPA Ski Garden has again extended the period their Number 3 quad lift and Number 2 pair lift will be closed. They now say those two lifts will be closed until Friday 14th, though this closure has been extended by a full week twice now (so they will have been closed for three weeks). The official reason is: "Due to the large amount of snowfall caused by the heavy snowfall, and the increasing risk of avalanches due to rising temperatures, we will be carrying out planned snow removal to ensure the safety of everyone". With those two ski lifts out of action, the C and D courses are not available and skiers need to either stick to the runs off the short triple lift by the base hotel or take the pair lift over to the other quad lift. Over at Iwappara ski area, it seems the top steep Giant course is going to be closed due to safety worries. Apparently there is a crack up near the top and it is thought it might slide... ---------------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 8th March 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 9th March 2025
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 1219cm Posted on Sunday 9th March 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. First of all, it was a good decision by Iwappara to close that top run due to a large crack forming yesterday, because there was a fairly large avalanche on that top area (Giant course) yesterday. A large amount of ground is now clearly visible, so that is surely the end of the season for the top section of Iwappara. (This has not been explicitly confirmed by the ski area, but they do say the top area is closed today). Fortunately, as far as we know, no people got caught up in it. Yesterday we had some periods of bright sunshine but generally a lot of (thin) cloud remained. We have some fresh snow this morning. 1-2cm in places. And it is still snowing lightly. It is not expected to last, with sunshine forecast for later in the day. Clearer skies are due tomorrow and Tuesday as temperatures start to warm up. ---------------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 9th March 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report.
