New snowfall at base 0cm
Snowfall at base this season 833cm
Posted on Sunday 25th May 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
So there we are. After what seems like an extremely long 'spring season', the last ski lifts of the season came to a standstill a few hours ago.
That's it, the 2013/2014 season is now officially over in the Yuzawa area; a season that was 184 days long according to Kagura.
It hasn't been the best season in terms of consistent and heavy snowfall, but even saying that there was certainly no shortage of snow. Interestingly the main run up at Kagura even now still has decent snow cover and effectively they could probably stay open for even longer if they wanted to (...but aren't!) It's curious how that happened, but that's Mother Nature for you I suppose.
Please check the archive reports here on SnowJapan to refresh the memory on how the season went - not only this last season but going back to 2002.
22nd November 2014 is the date to look forward to with the opening of Kagura and the start of the 2014/2015 season in the area - so that's less than 6 months!
In the meantime, we have some hot conditions to, er, look forward to. Things getting more humid, then 'rainy season' around July and then usually a hot August. Followed by a lovely autumn and the excitement of the snow on the horizon.
Today was actually borderline hot and the first time I have felt things being a bit humid this year. That trend is only going to continue now for a while.
Naeba is of course home to the Fuji Rock Festival at the end of July. Apparently at the moment there are over 100 different acts booked in to perform with headliners including Franz Ferdinand, Basement Jaxx, Arcade Fire, Manic Street Preachers, Jack Johnson and The Flaming Lips. That's all from Friday 25th July until Sunday 27th July. At the base of the Naeba resort in Yuzawa (and actually a very large distance from Mount Fuji!)
This is where I leave you until next season.
The Now reports will start up again on the other side of summer.
Have a great summer wherever you are, thanks for reading and see you in autumn.
