- Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 5th February 2014
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 468cm Posted on Wednesday 5th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . This is the kind of report I like writing, especially after all that warm stuff going on over the last week. Yes, it has been snowing and we got a decent amount too. Strong winds overnight mean it's difficult to put a number on it, but there was over 30cm on my car outside and in places it looks more than that. Resorts that report numbers are reporting the following as their haul of fresh overnight: Naeba - 30-40cm Kagura - 60cm Maiko Snow Resort - 40cm Some of the resorts are adding big chunks of cm to their official snow depths this morning, in the 40cm range. (Though curiously Kagura have got 60cm of fresh but not added any to the official snow depth!) But you can get the idea. What's even better is that it is continuing to snow now. The strong wind is still around and affecting some lifts - particularly up at Kagura it's only open from Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Gondola so with Tashiro completely closed it's only a very limited area open up there. I can't find any other major issues with lifts, though you might expect some to be moving a bit smaller if the wind continues. Snow forecast to continue through the day and into tomorrow. Perhaps a break from the snow on Friday, but back to snow for the weekend. It's great to see winter return. If we get a fair bit today as well the slopes should have all got a good refresh. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 478cm Posted on Thursday 6th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It was cold out there yesterday, proper cold. A biting wind as well. Icicles coming down from rooftops. A real mid winter picture it was. A good thing of course, especially after just a few days previous. More snow overnight, perhaps 10cm or so at town levels, and resorts around town including Kagura reporting 10-20cm of fresh on the slopes. The wind means that there's places with more. Kagura is fully open this morning and so there should be some excellent untouched to be found up there as the main area was closed yesterday. Indeed there should be good conditions everywhere with the new snow we have. It is snowing at the moment and it's forecast to be snowing on and off during the day today. There's less wind at the moment though stronger winds are likely later on this afternoon. I'm glad to say it is remaining cold and should do tomorrow too even if the snow eases off as forecast. If you are coming for the weekend be prepared for snow to be falling as it seems we are due snow on Saturday and Sunday. The more the better in terms of the conditions out on the mountain. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Not the most exciting things to report this morning. After a cloudy morning, later in the afternoon we enjoyed some clearer skies and avoided rain. Until night time. I was actually woken once in the middle of the night be the sound of heavy rain which obviously isn't good. This morning, Kagura are saying that they got 10cm of snow with resorts around town just a dusting. It seems that while it was raining down in town there was snow falling on the mountain. Wet and heavy very probably, but better than rain for sure! It's approaching 9:30am now and I'm happy to report that it has turned to snow. Light wet snow right now - not the kind that will end up with cm on the ground - but snow forecast until later this evening. This morning there's a wind blowing on the mountains and it looks like Kagura is on it's Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura No1 lift and Tashiro Ropeway to Tashiro No1 lift pattern. Winds are likely to persist for the day. We're expecting sun tomorrow and then unfortunately rain on Sunday as it warms up. With the mild conditions, not much fresh lately and rain... well, snow conditions not the best. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 31st January 2014, AM: Naeba: 190cm Kagura (Tashiro): 260cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 310cm NASPA Ski Garden: 200cm Gala Yuzawa: 280cm Iwappara: 150cm Yuzawa Kogen: 270cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 150cm Yuzawa Park: 160cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 280cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 220cm Joetsu Kokusai: 210cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 31st January 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 433cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 34 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . The snow yesterday morning didn't amount to much but it was of course better than that pesky 'r' stuff falling! This morning there's no new cm to report, and it's a sunny morning. Not deep blue skies, but more overcast as the morning moves on. A feel good morning all the same, even though snow conditions are of course not perfect at the moment. Local forecasts still tell us to expect it to rain tomorrow. Whether it will higher up or not is unclear but if you are out tomorrow higher up is definitely recommended. Temps tomorrow might approach double digits, so it will be very mild borderline warm. We want cold of course and happily we can expect a return to more winter like conditions from Tuesday. Hopefully some decent deliveries of fresh snow as well. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . About another 10-15cm of snow being reported by resorts around town this morning since yesterday, as of 9am this morning it is snowing slightly in Yuzawa while I brushed that new layer of snow off the bonnet of the car. We are told to expect the snow to stop and leave us with a mostly just cloudy day. It is -5C at 9am so it's keeping cold. We're expecting it to not be quite as cold tomorrow - but snow is forecast for the day and perhaps Sunday too. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 508cm Posted on Monday 10th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday the snow was falling for most of the day again though not a huge amount to show for it really. 10cm being reported around resorts since yesterday. The Kanetsu Expressway was closed all the way from Nerima to Tsukiyono (in northern Gunma) until mid-afternoon yesterday due to the heavy snowfall in the Kanto area on Saturday. That meant that lots of people planning to visit by car on Sunday coming from the south very probably gave up on the idea. From what I saw of the slopes around town, it seemed less busy than usual for a mid season Sunday. Hope you didn't get stuck in traffic and encountered problems due to the weather over the weekend. OK this morning we have that bit of new snowfall. Half an hour ago the snow had eased off and we even got some blue skies appearing, it looked like we were going to have a fine day. But in the last 10 minutes or so it has clouded over again and snow is once more falling. Snow is indeed forecast for the day. But might the clouds break again? They seem to be in neighbouring regions this morning, so there's definitely a chance. Clear skies are forecast for tomorrow, which is a national holiday so should see popular places busier than a normal weekday. After that the next snow even seems to be lined up for around Friday. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 10th February 2014, AM: Naeba: 230cm Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 320cm NASPA Ski Garden: 230cm Gala Yuzawa: 330cm Iwappara: 190cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 185cm Yuzawa Park: 190cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 280cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 250cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 10th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 508cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 40 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 75cm reported on 6 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It was snowing for the day yesterday, with another 10cm or so down here in town during the day and perhaps another 5cm or so this morning. Kagura report 10cm of fresh; Maiko Snow Resort report 10cm. Tokyo reports more than that. Yes, Tokyo got more snow than us yesterday which is... odd. They don't need it, let it fall here! Looks like the snow down in the capital and other regions to the south has caused some real problems. Above problems may well affect the slopes today here as many people who made plans to be here this weekend will not have made it or just cancelled their plans. I am hearing of cancellations at hotels in the town, for example. OK so we have had 5cm or so more snow overnight and it has been snowing lightly this morning though as I write this seems to have stopped. There was 5cm on my car, and a few resorts around town say the same, though curiously Kagura only say a dusting. That's from 7am though so perhaps the snow had only just started to fall at that time. Talking about Kagura they seem to have moderately strong wind up there and the Kagura Number 4 pair lift as well as the Kagura to Tashiro connecting course seem to be closed at the moment - they hope to get that open again once the winds calm down. Back down here in town it doesn't seem to be that windy. Light snow falling at the moment and snowy conditions basically forecast for all of today and tomorrow. - Yuzawa Now: Sunday 16th February 2014
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 577cm Posted on Sunday 16th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday was one of those days for sure. Heavy snow, strong winds at times, blocked roads, shut down trains and roads... both train and road connections (including Route 17 which was blocked in the Mikuni area due to a snowslide I believe) to Tokyo were cut off for large parts of yesterday preventing people from getting here - and leaving as well. It looks like the Kanetsu Expressway is still closed this morning to Yuzawa. The Shinkansen seems to be moving but some trains cancelled and some later than usual, so we are not back to normal yet. So yes it was really coming down hard in the morning in particular and I reckon by the end of the day there was at least another 30cm for me to move. Overnight it had eased off as there's only a few more cm this morning. (So I'm going to put 32cm for the new snowfall town area today including what we got yesterday). We've had well over 50cm that's for sure and in some places I would expect considerably more. The bottom line is that wherever you choose to ski today, you'll find lots of fresh snow. But choice is more limited than normal. Yesterday evening Kagura were warning that only part would be open again today due to avalanche risk in places, but they are actually 100% closed this morning - citing strong wind as the reason and those winds up to 20m/s. Naeba is only having a limited opening this morning. I see that GALA Yuzawa is also closed for the day due to the wind conditions up there. Other lifts may be affected but I can't see any major news at the moment.... resorts lower down and at town level seem to be open. So this morning... it is snowing now, but actually seems much wetter than the snow we had yesterday. It is actually above zero degrees as well now, which explains that, currently +1C. Snowy conditions likely to continue into tomorrow. --- Official resort snow depths @ Sunday 16th February 2014, AM: Some not updated for the day yet Naeba: 250cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 330cm Iwappara: 260cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm Yuzawa Park: 220cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 320cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 300cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Sunday 16th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 577cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 45 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 144cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Saturday 15th February 2014
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 545cm Posted on Saturday 15th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . It's snowing heavily this morning. And we have a fair bit as well. 30cm on my car, 20-30cm being reported by Naeba, 30-40cm by Kagura and 30+cm being reported by Maiko Snow Resort. (They are the places that clearly state new cm each morning and so why they get the mention!). So you can get the idea. It is still snowing fairly heavily now though as the forecast told us yesterday - it's not that cold. Hovering around 0 degrees now and forecast to slowly rise through the day and overnight. Yesterday we were told to even expect the snow to turn into rain later today, though fingers crossed we can avoid that. We might have to get away with sleet / wet snow. I also believe that the Kanetsu Expressway is closed from Tokyo up through to Tsukiyono at the moment. Also hearing that the Joetsu Shinkansen is undergoing checks early this morning due to the conditions. That will stop a lot of people who were planning on being here this weekend from coming and so I would expect the slopes around town to be quieter than normal. Snowy and windy conditions expected through tomorrow. Because of the wind, Kagura are only part open this morning - Mistumata up to the quad at Kagura, and Tashiro to the number 1 quad. Other skijo appear to be open as normal this morning though I might expect a few exposed lifts to be moving slower than usual and there's always the chance of changes. --- Official resort snow depths @ Saturday 15th February 2014, AM: Some not updated for the day yet Naeba: 230cm Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 320cm NASPA Ski Garden: 223cm Gala Yuzawa: 290cm Iwappara: 215cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 185cm Yuzawa Park: 175cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 255cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Saturday 15th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 545cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 44 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 112cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
