The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Clearer skies yesterday evening after all that cloud during the day. Overnight a bit of new snow. Just a few cm in the village. Goryu reporting 2cm, Hakuba 47 reporting 5cm at base and 10cm higher up. Hakuba Cortina reporting 5cm at base and 10cm up top. It's snowing at the moment but it's not a particularly cold morning though. Earlier on I saw -2C on the thermometer and currently close to 0 degrees and just a slight SW wind. If the forecast is correct though it will warm up a bit during the day today and perhaps rise to around +6 degrees - bringing with it the chance of that horrid rain stuff later on. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . I came back to Hakuba early afternoon yesterday and had a look round the resorts. It isn't exactly surprising, but from what I could see it looked extremely busy out there. I suppose it would be surprising if it were any different. But a few of my friends told me that they came back early as they didn't like to deal with the crowds. It was probably a good thing and allowing a bit more space for everyone else. It was a lovely day though. Just some clouds here and there around the mountains but lots of blue sky in the morning. It became overcast through the afternoon with more cloud developing mid resort levels. Hopefully everyone out there had a fine day though and the lively parts of the town were as lively as you might expect last night. It might be a good morning to take advantage of a few other people's sore heads from last nights partying early. Having said that, the resorts already look busy as of 9am. It started snowing earlier on this morning - the road outside my place was clear when I got up but had a thin covering of snow by 7am - and looks like it is coming down in all areas around Hakuba and Otari now. Nice light snow too by the looks. It's all grey and monochrome looking but visibility generally seems to be ok out there - it's not total white-out... at the moment anyway. That can always change of course. Snow is likely to be with us on and off (hopefully more on than off, of course) through today and into tomorrow. At village now it is about -5C degrees with just a slight northerly wind. -7.5C degrees up on Usagidaira with a 2.2m/s wind. Tomorrow of course is a national holiday and so we can expect it to be busier than a normal Monday. Crowds will likely start to thin out around lunchtime tomorrow though. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a cold and snowy start to the day in Hakuba. And it was a snowy day yesterday as well only clearing up a bit early evening. Lots of nice 'new snowfall since last night numbers' to report this morning from around the resorts: Hakuba Goryu - 20cm on Iimori and Toomi, 30cm up top Hakuba 47 - 10-15cm on lower slopes, 20-25cm on upper slopes Happo-one - Usagidaira reporting 20cm of new Hakuba Cortina - 20cm on lower slopes, 30cm on upper slopes Add what fell during the daytime yesterday and there's a nice new layer out there. Nice fresh powdery snow. It is about -4 degrees in the village area at the moment. As of 9:20am, Usagidaira at 1400m on Happo is recording a temperature of around -8. Rather limited visibilty out there I would say again, though this morning it seems that a few of the normally reliable webcams have conked out. Not much wind this morning though the forecast does tell us to expect stronger winds later on in the day. As expected yesterday was generally very busy on the slopes around the village. This weekend has definitely been one of it if not the busiest two days of the season, I would say. Of course, some resorts more than others and the numbers were much more manageable at some of the 'smaller' (for want of a better word) resorts. Today is the last day of the long weekend and so there will be more people out than usual for a Monday. Usually on days like this the afternoon gets more like normal as visitors make their way back home in the after lunch. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . An early report today as your reporter needs to get into Nagano City this morning. I'm glad it's an easy one. After a cloudy day with snow on and off yesterday, this morning it is blue skies and the sun is out! A few clouds nestling up to the peaks of the mountains early on this morning but I'd day it is going to be a beautiful day today. It was very cold overnight in Hakuba and right now it is still around -9 degrees here in the village near the base of Happo and there is just a slight wind. It will likely remain in the negatives all day. Rounding up the numbers from the resorts that are in so far - Cortina reporting 20cm of fresh snow this morning. 1cm at Hakuba 47 both up top and down at base. (One day I hope they report 47cm of new snow. Heck, every day please!) Again looks like the deepest fresh conditions will be found in the northerly resorts, but it should be a fun fun weekend everywhere. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There is lots of snow to report from Hakuba this morning. It is a very cold, snowy and windy morning. At the moment it is -13 degrees on Usagidaira at 1400m, and there's a 7.6m/s wind blowing. The new snowfall numbers being reported from around the village do not really represent the situation as seen from the village today. Goryu and 47 are both reporting 10cm of snow and Happo is keeping it's same snow depth. After speaking with a trusted friend over at Happo resort, that reason being that the strong winds are blowing it around on the mountain. Down in the village where there is less wind and the snow has settled the story is quite different. My personal observation is probably there has been around 25-35cm since yesterday in places, but it's one of those days when you ask different people around the valley and they'll probably all give you a different number. Whatever the number, it's a lot of snow and not the kind of day to nitpick over exact numbers! The numbers I am putting below are since yesterday morning. Actually the resorts in Otari village are reporting lot more snow on slopes - Hakuba Cortina reporting 40-50cm of new this morning on top of what we got yesterday. There's going to be pockets of deep, and thin coverings this morning due to the wind. Extreme care is needed out there today with increased avalanche risks. After the milder temperatures we had, this new sudden drop in temperature and changing wind patterns has put rapid load on East aspect slopes and cross loaded South and North facing slopes. It's one of those times when people should be staying on the slopes supported by the resorts, ie. stay in bounds. Visibility on the slopes actually doesn't look too bad in places now, though poor in others. Along with the snow risks, if not knowing where you are going is an issue, be that extra bit careful. Check the resort maps and follow people. But please don't be tempted to follow them into places they shouldn't be! Not all of the resort terrain will actually be available by the looks though. As of now it looks like the top lifts and runs at both Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba Happo-one are not going to be moving early on due to the wind conditions up there. The number 4 and 5 lifts at Hakuba Cortina are not going to be moving along with associated courses there. 47 looks to be preparing for all lifts to be moving. This will be a fluid situation and so for the latest please contact the resorts or check their websites. After the snow of today, tomorrow is still set to be somewhat calmer and clearer. We're back to potentially heavy snowfall on Monday though. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba and it's snowy news I bring this morning. Around 20cm or so of snow at village/base level this morning with resorts around Hakuba and Otari reporting up to 30cm on the slopes. Hearing reports of up to 40cm. Conditions on slopes should be excellent this morning. It's actually a relatively mild morning here with the temperature around 0 degrees at base at the moment. Usagidaira at 1400m is reporting a temperature of -7 degrees and a NW wind of about 3.5m/s. The wind has been affecting lifts early on. Seems some lifts on 47 affected. Over at Cortina the Number 4 and 5 lifts are closed today due to avalanche danger along with some of the popular courses over there. Snow is still falling on the mountain though lower down in the village there's even a few small areas of blue sky from time to time, though still mostly cloud cover. The forecast is for snow for most of the day in the region, followed by likely clearer conditions tomorrow morning. [I want to believe the '250cm' of new snow reported by Hakuba Goryu on upper slopes this morning, but I reckon it's more like 25cm. Having said that, 250cm of snow overnight is a scary prospect, if not somewhat exciting. Can you just imagine that. We have been known to post typos from time to time - I remember once Hakuba 47 was on 4700cm snow depth once a few years back acccoring to our report. We fixed that up of course as soon as about 20 people mailed us to let us know!] Back to serious hat... So lots of new snow and enough great conditions on the courses of the resorts to enjoy. With heightened avalanche riskes out of bounds it is highly recommended that people stay within the boundaries. Going outside is just asking for trouble. Nobody wants to hear about people being buried or injured on the slopes... The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . No new snow being reported around the valley this morning. The windy and snowy conditions of yesterday are not with us this morning and all is calm once again in Hakuba. Visibility remained generally poor yesterday on the mountains though late afternoon some areas were treated with a short period of sunshine through the clouds. Very dramatic it was up on Happo, where I was enjoying the snow. It is an overcast cloudy start to the day here this morning but visibility is good and we can see the mountain range backdrop to the village. It's just all grey, or is that silver? Silver sounds more cool. The forecast is telling me that we might see some sun later on. Doesn't seem likely as things are now, but as we all know conditions can quickly change in these here mountains. Light snow possible overnight and then snow again Friday night, so looks like we are going to get a topup of conditions once again just before the weekend. It's a fairly mild feeling morning and actually we are into the positive numbers at the moment - just. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Another cold start to the day in Hakuba. When I got up the thermometer was telling me -8 degrees. Not quite so cold now at around -4. Up at Usagidaira on Happo, it's down to -11 degrees right now and similar temperatures being reported from other resorts. Earlier on there were some lovely pink colours going on as the sun came up. All was calm. Sometimes you are rewarded for getting up early! Since then the sun has been mostly blocked out by kind of overcast cloudy cover, though visibility today is generally good. The forecast for the day does seem to be mostly cloudy, followed by some snowfall tonight and into tomorrow. There's just a slight breeze. Resorts around the villages are reporting between 0cm and 15cm since yesterday, as noted in the list below. With the temperatures remaining cold the conditions should be very nice today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Morning from Hakuba. A fine and calm day it was yesterday. The skies turned somewhat overcast from early afternoon but it stayed bright until evening arrived. Snow clouds moved back in overnight and we have around 10cm of fresh snowfall this morning - both around base and higher up, so it seems. Most snow reported coming from Hakuba 47 with 20cm in upper areas. It is continuing to snow now, though it isn't a particularly cold morning. Right now it is around -2C here at base and just a bit colder at 1400m. In fact some forecasts are calling for sleet or even rain later in the village and lower slopes areas. Hopefully we can avoid that. Not much of a wind this morning. Should be colder again from tomorrow. Unfortunately there's some very sad news to report. It seems that there was a death in recent days in the region. A male snowboarder was caught up and died due to avalanche burial in a North East aspect of out of bounds area (ie. not within the resort) of Tsugaike. Apparently he was riding alone during the snow storm conditions and triggered the slide on himself because of a cornice failure. It is always extremely sad to have to report this kind of incident of course, and hopefully hearing the reality of things like this happening might make people re-consider the potential dangers out there. If you are the type who likes to venture out of the course areas, make sure that you know what you are doing, are with someone who also knows what they are are doing and also have the right equipment. Please do take note of ski patrol closures - they're really not there to spoil the day. It was snowing nicely yesterday morning and we got some more cm on the ground... by lunchtime Hakuba Cortina was reporting 5cm of additional snow and up to that around Hakuba I would say too. The snow turned into rain late afternoon, in the village base areas anyway. Unfortunately that means that some of that lovely snow has turned into heavier and wetter stuff this morning. Doh! Anyway up to 5cm or so in the village area since my report yesterday. Hakuba 47 are reporting 3cm up top and 1-2cm lower slopes this morning and similar news coming from Hakuba Goryu. Hakuba Cortina, always one to give us the biggest numbers, are reporting 10-20cm of new snow in addition to that 5cm at lunchtime yesterday. This morning we have overcast skies with fairly poor visibility - only the lower parts of the mountain on show from village at the moment. There's just a slight breeze and light snow showers. Overcast skies, slight breeze, and vision quite poor today. Light snow showers. So, for now some suddenly wet and heavier conditions out on the slopes, I would imagine better conditions found as you go higher of course. Snow is forecast to be falling on and off through into the weekend and it should keep cold so hopefully over the next few days we will get some decent topups. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . New snow to report from Hakuba this morning. Yesterday by afternoon it was snowing and visibility up at Hakuba 47 where I boarding was pretty poor at times. Some nice big flakes coming down. This morning resorts around the village here are bringing in new snowfall numbers of just a few cm down at base and up to 20cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes. It's one of those mornings where there has been more snowfall to the north in Otari, and Hakuba Cortina this morning at reporting 25cm on the lower areas and up to 40cm up top. If you want the most fresh snow this morning, the Otari resorts would seem to be the place to be. Just be careful as all that new snow once again will increase the chance of avalanche or mishaps in the back and side country. Right now it is around -5C at Happo base and closer to -10C on the upper slopes, so nice and cold. Just a slight wind. This morning starts off generally just cloudy again with the chance of light snowfall through the day. There may be clearings though and a chance of seeing some sun. I can actually see some shadows being cast through the clouds now even over parts of the village. Tomorrow though, back to snow, perhaps with a vengeance. Some of the forecasts tell us to expect heavy snowfall going into the weekend. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well I said we were expecting more snow overnight and we sure got it. Yesterday was mostly cloudy and as evening approached the clouds came down lower and it was snowing. The headline this morning belongs to Hakuba Cortina again with their up to 50cm of snow since yesterday. This morning Hakuba 47 is claiming up to 40cm of fresh snowfall on upper slopes and 20-30cm around base. Here in the village I'd put the number on around 20cm, perhaps more. Another of those days when it should just be really good and deep everywhere. Right now it is approx. -5 degrees C in the village and there's a light north easterly wind. Stronger winds higher up on the mountain with Usagidaira reporting a wind speed of around 7m/s. It's -9C up there now. Happo seems to be affected by upper mountain winds about Usagidaira this morning with the Gondola and top areas of the resort not opening up as yet. No particular details of other delays or non openings this morning but there's a chance of wind affected operations. For the latest check their official sites. There's lots of cloud around still but it almost feels like it's going to clear up and some blue sky up there amongst all the remaining cloud. The sun is making some brief sneaky appearances as well. The forecast has us down for snow showers today and through tomorrow though. Perhaps we could be in for a surprise clear-up. The new heavy snowfall brings with it increased avalanche risks. This recent heavy snowfall has put rapid load on the already weak upper snowpack. With the potential dangers this brings, it is highly advisable to stay out of unsupported backcountry and side country areas today as well as away from steep convex slopes. Staying out of the Alpine zone all together is highly recommended. There's tons of powder on the supported slopes and more than enough fun for everyone. Looks like nighta at Happo today has changed times. Going to be 6pm to 9pm as the resort will be out grooming between 5pm and 6pm for some nice nighta coudroy conditions. Once we get to Monday the skies will probably begin to clear and then it looks like we might see a run of a few days of clearer possibly sunny weather. Maybe a few bluebirds in there. Going to warm up a bit too. For now though, lots of fresh snow to enjoy. Going to be lots of people out there.
