The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Mixed conditions out on the slopes yesterday depending on where you were. I was at Happo and while the sun was out at times in the morning, by late afternoon there was snow falling and visibility at times was down to zero. I think generally the pattern was clearer conditions, clouding over and followed by snow. Overcast cloudy skies earlier on this morning and about 3cm of new snow at village level in Hakuba since last night. Resorts are reporting some decent fresh snowfall on upper slopes. Hakuba Goryu and 47 both on the receiving end of 20cm of new snow. That place to the north in Otari that sounds like a place in Italy got up to 30cm (and I've been told to tell people not to go there! I think they just want the powder to themselves). :) Strong NE winds on the mountain have been affecting some of the resorts early this morning. The Alpen Quad lift at Happo had suspended operations earlier, but now seems to be moving. It looks like the top pairs at Goryu are affected and Line E at Hakuba 47 started moving at 10:15am, but at reduced speed. Perhaps expect more of the same depending on the wind conditions out there. Today looks likely to generally be a cloudy day with intermittend snow showers, but nothing major. One of those days when it's a real mixed bag of quickly changing conditions as right now it looks like snow is falling on Hakuba 47 but there's a bit of sun breaking through the clouds at Happo. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday we ended up actually seeing the sun for short periods in the afternoon as the general cloudiness eased off somewhat. Clouds obviously moved back over Hakuba overnight though because.... You want more snow? We got it! Yes, more snowfall in Hakuba to report this morning. There's around 5-10cm of new snow nestled around village areas. The Hakuba Goryu resort is reporting 10cm on the lower slopes and 25cm of fresh snowfall on upper slopes this morning. Over to the north at Hakuba Cortina, they have up to 30cm of fresh snow this morning. It's snowing in the village as I write this and very grey and cloudy again. Pretty cold at around -6C, and around -13C above 1400m. Windy too and those winds are blowing the snow around somewhat this morning making visibility pretty poor even down in the village. As far as I can tell though the wind is not affecting lift operations at the resorts at the moment, we seem to be open as normal though there may be a few lifts running at reduced speed. A quick look at the webcams from around the resorts shows generally poor visibility on the mountain as expected. Let's take a look at the forecasts. We can expect the current snowfall to ease off by tomorrow. Mixed messages on different forecasts for tomorrow but the general consensus seems to be less likelihood of snow and generally cloud. Some tell us to expect sun over the weekend. We'll see. Temperatures should keep cold though. I think it's safe to say that it should be great conditions over the weekend. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Snow of the heavier variety falling this morning in the village. Yesterday it did continue clouding over, but the sun was still out in places by mid to late afternoon. It was snowing later on and through the night though and this morning the mountains are reporting varying amounts of new snowfall. 10cm at Goryu, 15cm at Hakuba 47 and a perhaps unexpected (but then again it's Cortina) 20-25cm at Hakuba Cortina to the north. Perhaps up to 10cm or so at base levels and areas around the village. As I said it's a heavier kind of snow rather than light and fluffy but it sure is better than anything beginning with the letter 'r' and so it's good with me. Hopefully it can stay this way though temperatures are forecast to rise to around 4C later on in the day today here in village so we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed. We might not be able to avoid it. Right now it is around +1C. Surely it will be snowing higher up though, so that's the place to be. (Isn't it always?!) Clearer conditions are still forecast for tomorrow and Thursday and it's going to keep mild until perhaps Thursday night. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Anyone out there enjoy yesterday? Poor visibility but with snow continuing to come down there were some very very fine snow conditions out there. Oh yes. It was Australia Day yesterday and as there are one or two friends from Australia in Hakuba at the moment there were a few lively gatherings last night. Maybe a few sore heads this morning, as well as sore limbs from efforts on the slopes during the daytime! Visibility is better this morning as things have calmed down somewhat and it was clearer but clouds have been gradually moving in covering parts of the mountains as well. Right now it looks like variable visibility depending on where you are and generally less as you get higher up. Here's what the resorts are reporting in terms of snowfall since yesterday: Hakuba Goryu - 15-30cm Hakuba 47 - 20cm Hakuba Cortina - 35-45cm 15+cm here in village. The snow has eased off this morning. It is a cold -6C with a brisk wind here in the village area but it looks like resorts are open as normal this morning. Up at Usagidaira on Happo it is -9C, average northerly wind speed of 3.6m/s and a maximum of 6.4m/s. We may see scattered snow showers but the local forecast for the day is generally just cloudy and similar for tomorrow. After that, a run of a few days of clearer weather is likely. Should be another great day out on the slopes today. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . 1st February 2013. I can hardly believe it is already February. The time seems to go so fast in winter and while resort skiing and boarding goes on until May in Hakuba, the thought of being in peak season is just mad. We might be in 'peak season' now, but the current snow conditions aren't quite up there living up to that name. For the moment anyway without the fresh these last few days. A beautiful day yesterday and a beautiful day today as well. No new snowfall to report from around the resorts. This morning we had clear blue skies once again. Since late morning thin clouds have been forming, taking away most of the blue contrast giving us a more overcast feel to the afternoon. The sun is still shining through this new layer. Right now it is approaching +9C at village level. Warm! It's closing in on +5C even up at Usagidaira on Happo-one, so it's feeling warm out on the mountain today as well. Tomorrow... well, tomorrow is it going to rain. It's going to be as warm as today but there seems almost no chance of us avoiding the rain I'm afraid to say. It might even start as late as this evening. We're hoping it might get to be snow higher up, especially as we approach tomorrow evening, but it's going to be 'girigiri' borderline at best. Sunday would seem to be the pick of the weekend though for those visiting. It is recommended that people stay out of the backcountry at the moment especially with the probable rain and snow at elevation adding load to the already somewhat unstable snowpack. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba, and welcome to a new week. If you count Monday as the start of the week, of course. And a fine morning it seems it will be. Lots of white cloud around the mountains, but lots of blue sky up there as well and the sun shining down casting lots of shadows all around. Very dramatic. No new snow to report here at village level, and resorts not reporting anything other than a sprinkling up at Cortina. Temperatures dropped down to -10 degrees overnight and as of 9am it was still around -5 degrees. Hakuba 47 are reporting a temperature of -12C up top this morning, so it's a cold start to the day. Just a slight northerly wind. After all that snow we got a few days back, it seems that this week we are going to be enjoying clearer skies with just the chance of an occasional snow shower from time to time. Temperatures set to rise as the week goes on with Friday looking almost warm there on the forecast and bringing a chance of rain into Saturday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well todays report isn't going to be too difficult! No new snow to report. The sun is out. Blue skies all around. It's a stunning morning in Hakuba. A cold start to the day, it was -7 degrees when I got up and now 'warmed up' somewhat to around -5. A high of around +4 in the village is likely today. The forecast tells us to expect simular tomorrow but perhaps even warmer, and then still rain likely on Saturday. With freezing level forecast to be above 2000m, it's going to be touch and go if it might be raining right up to the top of the ski resorts as well. We can only hope that will not happen and wait to see. It does seem we are in for a run of milder conditions through into at least early in the week. Should be good groomers early this morning. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It's colder this morning in Hakuba I'm happy to report. We couldn't escape that rain yesterday. It wasn't the best day of the season, that's for sure. At 3pm, Hakuba 47 were reporting rain on the slopes and a temperature of +4C. If it were spring we might not have cause to complain but for early February it's not what we expect. Having said that most seasons do have one or two events like this and so it's perhaps something we just have to get through. The rain of yesterday means that snow conditions will be unstable and wet. A very slight dusting of snow overnight reported at some resorts around Hakuba and Otari, but enough to cover up the icy conditions. OK on to the more positive news! As I said it is colder this morning and we are back down into negative numbers, though later on it will likely rise to around +2 in village. -7C up at Usagidaira which is around 1400m above sea level, and a slight north easterly wind. Lots of cloud around the mountains this morning and so visibility is variable depending on where you are. Here down in the village there is some blue sky appearing and the sun shining down in places. Chance of light snow tomorrow on the mountains though it will be another mild day and there's a good chance it will be rain again down in the village areas. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Snow yesterday and I'd say 15cm or so at village level by the evening time. Not the lightest powdery kind of snow, somewhat heavy. Resorts around the village will have got that and a bit more and I hear reports of up to 30cm in the resorts of Otari, perhaps slight less in Hakuba. Curiously the resorts seem to be almost coy about this new snow on their official reports this morning in a classic case of under-reporting. Anyway as for today, overnight snow showers continued and at the moment again somewhat wet snow falling in village - hopefully lighter consistency snow on the mountain. Add a few more cm to the tally this morning so far. As of 9:40am it is -1C at village level and around -4C up at 1400m on Usagidaira over in Happo, and a slight southerly wind. Generally poor visibility out on the slopes this morning with cloud cover and the snow. This new 30cm or so is of course on top of the rain affected slopes that we had in the days previous, creating increased surface instability. It is recommended to stay inbounds at the moment and enjoy the conditions on the resort runs with the increased risks. Snow forecast to continue on and off through tomorrow and according to some of the local forecasts we might have a clear and calm Saturday. The clouds lifter yesterday and we ended up with a fine afternoon - by mid afternoon the poor visibility of the morning in places had turned into nice clear views and all was calme. Before it went dark the skies went all 'silver' (sounds better than grey!) on us again. Snow clouds moved in overnight and this morning it is snowing. There's a bit of snow on the ground with the resorts reprting varying amounts - Goryu 3-5cm, Hakuba 47 5-8cm, Cortina 2-5cm - so that should give you an idea. It's snowing pretty good at the moment, nice big flakes, down to the village and the roads are getting a nice white covering. Drive carefully! Having said that, for now visibility on the slopes looks to be fairly ok - it's not totally whiteout. Let's hope these conditions continue for the day. An easing off later on and we might get to see the sun tomorrow. Then more snow into Friday. More sun on Saturday, then more snow on Sunday. See a pattern here? All forecast of course, so we'll just have to see how it all turns out. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Nice and cold in Hakuba this morning. Just a dusting of new snow at village level but up to 10cm on the slopes reported from around the resorts. Some fairly strong winds this morning but as far as I can tell all resorts are open as normal this morning. As I mentioned temperatures have dropped a fair bit today and it's around -6C in the village now and -12C up at Usagidaira at 1440m with a 5m/s north westerly wind and gusts of over double that. Snow is forecast for the day today and currenly the mountains are covered in cloud, it's not a day for the camera. Tomorrow should keep cold but it should be calmer and also clearer. Chance of the sun coming out to play. In resort news, Hakuba 47's half pipe opens tomorrow. Hurray! Let's half pipe. Monday is a national holiday in Japan - National Foundation Day - and so it's a long weekend coming up. Chinese New Year is also this coming Sunday. It's one of the busiest weekends of the season, so be prepared! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Just a sprinkling of snow this morning in the village, with resorts around Hakuba and Otari reporting up to 10cm on the upper slopes. A better picture than yesterday for sure. It did end up raining and we got wet unfortunately. Quickly onto today and we have that slight dusting of new snow along with a colder start to the day. There'll be some hard and icy conditions out there this morning I would think. It's a mostly cloud morning with all but the lower parts of the mountains covered in cloud so generally poor visibility higher up on the upper slopes. Just cloudy though with nothing falling from them and as I said a colder temperature of around -3C in as of 9am. -8 degrees up at Usagidaira on Happo-one but only a slight wind at the moment. Snowfall is likely tonight and into tomorrow morning and we're likely to have snow showers on and off over the next few days.
