  • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 19th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 105cm Posted on Thursday 19th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The snow yesterday morning didn't really amount to much. On to this morning and we have fine weather with a fair amount of cloud around but blue sky too, and the sun is out. Forecasts do tell us to expect some snow later on today, with the next snow after that due from Saturday night through Monday... potentially good amounts of it too. I was talking with a few ski area manager types yesterday. Maiko Snow Resort said that there is over 1.5m of snow up on the top Okusoechi area, though not quite enough snow (as of yesterday) to open lower areas. A similar story from a few other places, too. It seems like there is decent snow at higher elevations, though not enough yet really for some lower sections. Ishiuchi Maruyama, Kandatsu Snow Resort, Maiko Snow Resort, Muica Snow Resort and NASPA Ski Garden are all scheduled to be at least part open from tomorrow morning. Ipponsugi Snow Park, Iwappara, Kagura (Tashiro Ropeway), Muikamachi Hakkaisan, Nakazato Snow Wood, Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort and Yuzawa Park all plan to be open from Saturday morning. There is going to be a lot of information to check tomorrow morning, so the report might appear later than usual. We'll try to bring you as many details as possible. Also coming tomorrow is news of some free lift tickets! -------------------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 19th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 20th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this seas 109cm Posted on Friday 20th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It's all go at the moment! So, four ski areas have opened for the season from this morning - Ishiuchi Maruyama, Kandatsu Snow Resort, Maiko Snow Resort and NASPA Ski Garden. (* Muica will open tomorrow). A large part of Ishiuchi is open, apart from some lower runs especially in the Central area by the gondola base. Kandatsu has two lifts running, Maiko has the top Okusoechi area open (acccess via the gondola) and NASPA has all five lifts moving. So they are all either 'part' or 'mostly' open - more information on what is open at each can be found below. Tomorrow another eight ski areas in the region will open. They are Ipponsugi Snow Park, Iwappara, Kagura (Tashiro Ropeway), Muica Snow Resort, Muikamachi Hakkaisan, Nakazato Snow Wood, Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort and Yuzawa Park. The information in the list below will be checked and updated each morning, but hopefully before too long they will all be 'fully open' and things will be simpler. It's always great when we reach that point; not only for the obvious reason, but it also makes the reports easier! Weather forecasts are all looking very promising for some significant snowfall on Sunday and Monday and perhaps into Tuesday. That is due to start tomorrow night. Before then, we might get some sunny skies and rather mild conditions during the day tomorrow. No doubt quite a lot of people will be getting up here tomorrow for their first tracks of the season. ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 20th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 22nd December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this seas 125cm Posted on Sunday 22nd December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a wet start last night, it turned to snow and we already have 14cm and it is quickly building up now with some moderate to heavy snow at the moment. As of 9am, our measurement is 16cm. (Note: updated since original report due to an issue with our measuring point, and it is quickly increasing as this report is being written). It is rather windy out there, too. The current weather, while bringing us the precious goodies, is affecting the operation of some ski areas this morning. Only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open due to the weather conditions (the main Kagura Area, Tashiro Ropeway and Tashiro Area are closed). A few other ski areas are warning that lifts might be affected. Visibility is limited at best and generally quite (or very!) poor. Real care required outside, whether on the ski slopes, driving or just walking. Once this snow storm has passed, expect most ski areas to be mostly or fully open. That might be Wednesday, Christmas Day. Ho ho ho, indeed! Good times. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 22nd December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 23rd December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this seas 151cm Posted on Monday 23rd December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Another 26cm of fresh snowfall to report as of 9am this morning and moderate snowfall still falling. Once again, only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is open this morning, due to the weather conditions (particularly the wind). That aside, ski areas are generally part to mostly to fully open. We are noticing a few lifts being rested today compared with yesterday and that is probably due to it being Monday. The three ski areas that make up Yuzawa Snow Link (Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama) are all open but the 'link' right now is limited to a shuttle bus between them. It looks like the lift connections between them (Buggy and Landau Ropeway ropeway are scheduled to be open from Friday 3rd January). It feels like more snow is needed to really push everywhere into opening up fully and hopefully the snow we get by the end of tomorrow will help towards that. Wednesday might be clearer but there's more snow lined up on forecasts from Thursday night, Friday and Saturday. Surely by the time we get to the end of the year, all will be set! While we haven't really had any signature 'really crazy mad snowfall' just yet, down at town level anyway, this early showing of very respectable snowfall is a nice contrast to some of the early season struggles we have endured in recent years. That is, of course, really great to see. Hopefully this pattern of regular snowfall and temperatures that remain low will be an ongoing feature of this season. It seems that some of you who entered the lift ticket giveaway (details below) did not receive the automated email. Sorry about that. Not sure why it is happening, and we really don't have any time to investigate right now. However, please be assured that unless your email got bounced back to you as undeliverable, we have received your entry. (We have received well over 500 so far). Entries OK through Thursday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Monday 23rd December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 24th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 54cm Snowfall at base this seas 205cm Posted on Tuesday 24th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I bring very good news. We have received a lot of good snowfall since the report yesterday morning. Last night, I measured 24cm of it since 9am, and this morning I have just cleared another 24cm from the same spot. So a total of 48cm. That is just outside of Yuzawa. There has been 54cm of snow at our official Yuzawa measuring spot, which is the number that goes on the report this morning. Excellent. Your reporter went for a walk last night (after clearing the snow) and it was really coming down at a fast rate. Big lovely flakes. I noticed I had a big smile on my face. Our 'snow walls' by the side of roads around town are starting to look pretty good. Over 30 years living in this region and heavy snowfall never fails to excite! The snow has eased off somewhat at the moment, snowing lightly as this report is posted, but we might get more cm during today. The snowfall should have eased off by tonight/overnight and we might be treated to some clearer skies tomorrow morning. So it should be an excellent Christmas Day, wherever you choose to ski or snowboard. Please note that tomorrow the Yuzawa Now report will appear later than usual. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 24th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 25th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this seas 219cm Posted on Wednesday 25th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Hello from Yuzawa and Merry Christmas! We started this Christmas morning with a lot of cloud around but the cloud gradually started to break and clear from mid-morning. We have been treated to some lovely blue skies and bright sunny weather and there is now quite a lot of with thin cloud developing. Still bright and sunny. So it has been a very fine morning to be out on the mountains. It's quite mild too. That is very pleasant, of course, but it would be great if it always kept cold even when the sun was out. Tomorrow will also be on the mild side, but it should be getting colder by night time and we should be getting our next delivery of fresh snow into Friday. (Some forecasts warn of some rain before the snow, particularly in town, so we should be prepared for the chance of that). By the way, yesterday and overnight we measured a total of 14cm snowfall to add to this report. Most of that came during the daytime yesterday. Hakkai Sanroku ski area in Mimaniuonuma is open from this morning, so now the only ski area in the region left to open (that intends to open) is Chateau Shiozawa. That should be open from tomorrow. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 27th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this seas 244cm Posted on Friday 27th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A very good morning to you from Yuzawa. We got rained on yesterday (light at times, heavy in the evening), but we can quickly put that behind us because this morning we have a lot of fresh snow again! Our measurement of new snowfall in town at 8:00am is 25cm, and it is snowing quite heavily at the moment. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting '30-40cm' of fresh this morning. With more snow forecast for the day today and through tomorrow, too, I think we can expect another big number tomorrow morning. The snowfall might ease off by Sunday, with a fair chance of clearer skies on Monday. Then back to snow on Tuesday. That's what the various forecasts tell us for now anyway. (That rain yesterday aside), the very pleasing pattern seems to be continuing! ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 27th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 28th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 55cm Snowfall at base this seas 299cm Posted on Saturday 28th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was really snowing quite heavily for a good part of yesterday, and we have had more overnight. At around 6pm last night, 28cm of snow was cleared from our measuring point. This morning there was a further 27cm. That makes an impressive total of 55cm of fresh snowfall since the last report yesterday morning. And it is still snowing! It doesn't look like we are expecting quite as much over the next 24 hours, but the snow is set to continue into tomorrow. Some forecasts indicate perhaps a break in the snow at times tomorrow, and then a better chance of some clearer skies on Monday. The main issue that ski areas are facing at the moment is not a lack of snow; rather, dealing with all the snow we have received over the last few days. For example, it looks like GALA Yuzawa is starting the day with only 2 runs in the Central Area open, Entertainment and Gigi, but they hope to be able to open up more lifts/courses later. (They are also actually mentioning staffing issues on their official site this morning). Also hearing of some delays opening at Maiko Snow Resort. Other ski areas may well be similarly affected, especially early morning, so definitely check with them before heading out. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 28th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 29th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this seas 341cm Posted on Sunday 29th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 9:45am update: Mostly cloudy again! ----------- 8:45am update: We have clearer skies and sunshine now! It might not last long, but everywhere is looking really beautiful with all the fresh snow. ----------- Original report: Good morning from Yuzawa. Well, we did actually get quite a lot of snow during the day yesterday. By 5:30pm, there was another 25cm at the measuring point and after clearing that off, there is another 17cm this morning. Total of 42cm. (That is curiously quite different from the 23cm that was recorded at the JMA station. But it's what we have measured, so...) It's always interesting how it seems like once there is a good base of snow in place, incoming snow piles up quickly (quicker?). Imagination, perhaps? But that has been the case the last few days. The snow walls around town have suddenly become much taller and there's just a whole lot of snow around. Excellent news, of course. We most definitely approve! It has to be noted that road traffic was affected yesterday, so some people were caught up in less pleasing circumstances. This morning we started with a lot of cloud and some blue sky too. The blue sky is less now than it was just half an hour ago, and forecasts all seem to predict a mostly cloudy morning with more snow falling a bit later on in the day. Sun and generally clearer skies are forecast for tomorrow along with relatively mild conditions. (Memo to nature: keep cold, please!) Ski area news: Kandatsu Snow Resort is closed today. The reason seems to be some kind of electrical problem. The Chariot pair lift in the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa will be operating today, along with the Joanna courses... and the downhill Falcon course too. (Just the Southern Area and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama left to open now there). Over at Maiko Snow Resort, the gondola is back up and running, but the Okusoechi quad is still closed. A bit worrying, that - will try to find out what is going on there. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 29th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 30th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this seas 352cm Posted on Monday 30th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 10am update: As expected, early clouds mostly cleared and it is a beautiful sunny blue sky morning. Ski areas are generally very busy, too! ----------- Original early morning report: An early report this morning. Ski are snow depth data will appear later on. Well, yesterday morning was interesting. For a brief time yesterday morning we got to enjoy a period of largely blue sky and sunshine, but the forecasts were right. The clearer skies didn’t last long as the clouds quickly moved in from the northwest and by late morning it was snowing again. And, again, quite heavily at times with limited visibility. Snow continued through the day and into the night, resulting in another 11cm to add to the report this morning. We start this morning with a mix of cloud and clearer sky, but it looks set to be fine and sunny. It will be milder than we would like, but it’s hard to complain on such a beautiful morning. Early morning conditions should be a whole lot of fun today. Ski areas were generally noticeably busier yesterday in the run up to New Year. We should expect them all to be busy over the next several days in particular. Kandatsu Snow Resort will have been upset at not being able to be open at such a busy time, but is open again from this morning. Unfortunately it looks like the Sunrise Express gondola/6-person lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama will not be operating today. (Reason unclear). But that handy new pair lift they recently installed (Chuo Family Lift) will be in action to keep things running smoothly from the main base area. The status of the top (Okusoechi) Maiko quad lift remains unclear, so we just hope that they get that moving again quickly. ----------------------- Ski area information for Monday 30th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 31st December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 352cm Posted on Tuesday 31st December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was a beautiful morning yesterday, with clear blue skies and sunshine. Stunning views of the mountains on offer. Clouds gradually formed later in the day. After a chilly start, it was a mild day rising up to around +4C in town mid-afternoon. At 8am this morning it is just over 0C and we expect another mild day. There is a chance of rain (in town at least) later on, but that should be turning into snow by later tonight. Let's hope the rain is kept to a minimum. It's a bit annoying, but if we can get to report fresh snow again tomorrow it will feel better! There has been a lot of cloud around early this morning, but at the moment there is quite a lot of blue sky above Yuzawa, and it is bright and sunny at times too. There's more cloud to the north of Yuzawa in the Minamiuonuma valley. Various forecasts all seem to indicate that precipitation will start by mid- to late morning and continue into tomorrow. There is some very good news from Maiko Snow Resort... the Okusoechi quad lift will resume operations this morning. However, the Sunrise Express gondola lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama is still on hold. If you look at the snowfall statistics from this season and previous seasons, links above, you'll see that we have reported an observed snowfall of 352cm this season so far. At the same point of the season last year, that number was just 151cm. So this year we have well over double. Snowfall numbers on their own don't always tell the full story, of course, but in this case we clearly have much more snow around than last year. Let's hope the next few months continue to deliver as well! There will be various events happening around town this evening to bring in the New Year. Stay safe out there, have fun, and see you for the first report of 2025 tomorrow. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 31st December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 1st January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this seas 371cm Posted on Wednesday 1st January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And a Happy New Year to all readers and friends of SnowJapan. Kotoshi mo yoroshiku ne! After the fine start to the day yesterday, we did eventually get some yucky rain in town. But the good news this morning is the 19cm of fresh snowfall to report from Yuzawa and 14cm at our point to the north in Minamiuonuma. Maiko Snow Resort, the only ski area that is regularly talking about it, is reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall this morning. (It continues to be a real head-scratcher to us why more ski areas don't talk about fresh snow numbers; at the same time admitting that we are very geeky on that stuff!) It is snowing at varying rates this morning but might clear up somewhat by this afternoon. Some local forecasts give us a good chance of getting some clearer skies. The next few days looks like it might be an unpredictable mix of cloud, light snow at times and perhaps some clearer skies too. (Biggest New Year hope: just stay cold please, and no rain!) Looks like wind and weather in general might be affecting a few lifts at Kagura early this morning, with the pair lift taking over from the quad on the main Kagura run. Today is the day when the Kagura Number 5 lift and BC gate are scheduled to be opening for the season at Kagura, but as of 8:30am we cannot find confirmed information on the status on that. Presumably, if the top quad isn't running... Happy to report that the Sunrise Express gondola at Ishiuchi Maruyama is back operating this morning.
