The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is noticeably milder this morning - still in low negative numbers, though possibly venturing just above 0C during the day. That's not stopping snow from falling though, and just as I type this out some nice big flakes are falling. Variable visibility at the start of the day, I'd say generally ranging from limited to poor. I am happy to report that all ski lifts appear to be opening as planned this morning; and there are more lifts open for the weekend (see updated list below). Tomorrow should be a bit colder and then colder still from early in the week. Snow clouds should be sticking around. I hope you have a good Saturday. Wherever you are, stay safe and have fun. Listen to the ski patrol’s advice before stepping out of the gates. A hoar layer (Feb 1st) is present under the snowdrifts. The snowdrifts under 900m elevation are now stable, however the snowpack above 1000m is still unstable and avalanche hazard remains considerable. We got more snow yesterday during the day, but last night it got a bit warm and there was actually some rain falling. Booooo! Thankfully this morning it is dry there was more clearer conditions a bit earlier; more cloud now. Due to wind last night it sounds like the tracks aren't groomed as normal this morning. Milder conditions due today - tomorrow we should get a return to colder temps and... yes, snow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is another very cold morning and we have another fine layer of beautiful fresh snowfall. I have just measured 32cm. Unfortunately, wind is an issue again this morning and the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold at the start of the day, as is the gondola at Annupuri. Village gondola open but moving at a reduced speed. Lets see if the wind might behave later on in the day; looks like it should be better tomorrow. The forecast still has a mix of cloud and light to moderate snow at times over the coming week. There may be all sorts of 'stuff' going on this season, but one good thing is that we are doing well for snow. And for that, I think we should be thankful. ----- Now that I am checking all the 'snow depth' and 'snowfall' numbers every morning - and reporting them within this report (below) - it is indeed a bit frustrating when they clearly are not updated. Like today, Niseko Village says 2cm at base which is the same as it was yesterday and clearly not right for this morning. I want to keep on reporting them but feel I must omit that this morning and make a note of it. Remember, pinch of salt and all that. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data 6:25am. Note: wind speed is average over 10min. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steep with blizzard conditions at the sea and mountains. From this morning’s observation, there is major snowdrift development above 800m, 300cm in some locations with cornices collapsing naturally. Wind is predominantly from the north. Wind and snow is expected to continue with the wind swinging around to a westerly. The avalanche risk continues to be high on SE leeward slopes of knolls and cornices above 800m. There is the possibility of large scale surface avalanches(100cm fracture) on Kozan no Sawa around 1000m and Osawa cornice face. Please do not ride these slopes even if the gondola or lifts operate. Also avoid the valley bottoms, these are avalanche paths. You cannot avoid a 100km/hr avalanche if it hits while you are down there. The northerly wind has created soft slabs on Higashi One around 1100m and there is the possibility of large scale avalanches occurring. Please stay off these steep slopes even if the gates open. If someone puts in a high traverse others will use it, increasing the chance of an accident. Peak gate openings yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol's instruction. Snow is good in the trees. At time of writing, you couldn't get it any better after more fresh snow yesterday afternoon and post-grooming with blue skies all around (although the summit is now being brushed by a cloud moving over). There is still a lot of cloud around and it is snowing higher up, but things should clear up during the morning and we are forecast some sunny skies. Conditions should be really great out there and it will be a fine day to be out on the mountain. As will tomorrow too. Sun from the start is forecast for tomorrow, before more fresh snow due again later Sunday and Monday. That sounds like a good pattern to me. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have two main good things to report this morning - lots more snow and less wind. Hurray! It is good and cold too with temperatures down into minus double digits, even here at base. As I prepared to post this report at 8:30am the only lift that was marked as on hold was the top King Number 4 at Niseko Grand Hirafu... but that also now seems to be scheduled to open (along with all other lifts that should be open). All forecasts still show us getting consistent snow through next week. It might get a bit milder around Saturday, but other than that temperatures should be remaining low. The winter type pressure pattern continues however the isobars have spread a little further apart. The snow above 1000m has been blown off and dangerously accumulated on leeward slopes below 700m. Above 1100m cornice growth has been massive, up to 10m in some locations. Stimulation can break off huge pieces that can be extremely dangerous. As of 5am the snowdrift growth has slowed however from observation, data and snow transition, the avalanche risk continues to be high on leeward slopes above 1000m. Also best to avoid high elevation cornice faces like Kozan no Sawa and Higashi One. Gate openings are yet to be decided. Peak gates are expected to be closed. Please follow the patrols instructions. Below 800m the forests are full of wind blown snow, the type of snow Niseko is famous for. A little heavy but good bounce. The snow off the side of the runs is deep, snowboarders should carry a pole. And just a dusting of snow being reported by the ski area since yesterday morning and indeed it did ease off. So there's clear skies right now but snow clouds are due to be with us again later on, possibly even during the morning, and they might also come with some blowy winds. With snow due today and overnight, come tomorrow the sun might be back...and on Saturday too. The Hikage Gondola is all genki and starting the day today. Naski is genki too. And so am I.
