  • Myoko Now: Saturday 15th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 687cm Posted on Saturday 15th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snowfall slowed down during the day yesterday, but never actually stopped. Today we've got a touch of sunlight, but the snow is still falling lightly. That big blast of snow yesterday was not particularly light and fluffy (ask anyone here who had to dig out their car). I think it was the first time ever that NHK's weather guy explained, and warned about, slab avalanches, and that big cohesive layer, on top of a hard, icy layer below, could in fact result in that dangerous type of avalanche. Things should be settling down now, so going into the backcountry will be a better choice than right after the snowfall (but it's still going to be a heavy fight to climb, and the slide risk is definitely still out there). There is 25cm of new snow at base level and it is forecast to keep snowing all day. Visibility is poor. The ski area has reported the Kitanomine Gondola will not operate due to wind. • Hakuba Now: Friday 14th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 54cm Snowfall at base this season 300cm Posted on Friday 14th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Well, it has really kicked off over the last day! First up, here's new snowfall news from around ski areas (who are to varying degrees struggling to open as normal): Goryu are reporting a super whopper 100cm of new snowfall! Well, they seem to be on the Valley official site. Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding! (I don't think I have ever seen a three digit report before). Cortina is going with 60cm, as is Happo-one at Usagidaira. Tsugaike come in with an impressive 56cm. Iwatake are reporting with 30-50cm. Yes, we have had a lot of snow in the last day. There's been an avalanche by the Number 4 lift at Hakuba Cortina. They are just open with their Number 1 pair and Number 2 quad lifts this morning as they deal with the situation. As I mentioned earlier, some lifts are struggling to open this morning including the gondola and top lifts at Hakuba Goryu, the gondola at Happo-one and the top part of Tsugaike. Super extra care is needed in these conditions. It's truly great to see loads of snow everywhere. (I'm continuing my 'blacking out the News' thing too, so blissfully just able to take all this beautiful goodness in). Tomorrow there might be some sun and it goes without saying that conditions should be top notch. ----- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far [*upper areas] [As reported by official sources at time of this report] Hakuba Goryu: 438cm Hakuba 47: 425cm Hakuba Happo-one: 374cm Hakuba Cortina: 470cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 439cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: - Upper: 100cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 310cm - Toomi: 150cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall: - Summit: 60cm - Lower: 40cm Official snow depth: - Top: 300cm - Base: 165cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: - Kurobishi: ?cm - Usagidaira: 60cm - Nakiyama: ? • Nozawa Now: Friday 14th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 58cm Snowfall at base this season 485cm Posted on Friday 14th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . This is more like it! We got lots of snow since my last report. A lot! Let's see what the ski area is reporting. Yesterday the top areas were reporting 10-13cm of fresh during the day. This morning there's an extra 68cm being reported from Yamabiko and 55cm on Uenotaira. Lower areas are reporting 40-50cm too. Woo-hoo! That's one impressive refresh. The problem this morning is wind. Nagasaka Gondola, Yamabiko quads, Skyline and Uenotaira are all going to be closed for the entire day. There may be other lifts affected (I'm looking at you Hikage Gondola and Paradise quad). Thats unfortunate, but it means that after we get more snow today, once things calm down the conditions out there should be superb. Tomorrow perhaps? Naski sitting the morning out. Probably in an onsen. Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (total since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko (1615m): 81cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 65cm - Hikage (660m): 50cm (*since yesterday afternoon) - Nagasaka (616m): 50cm (*since yesterday afternoon) - Karasawa (563m): 40cm (*since yesterday afternoon) Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1615m): 315cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 260cm - Hikage (660m): 230cm - Nagasaka (616m): 220cm - Karasawa (563m): 160cm All courses apart from the following plan to be open: - Yunomine A - Mizunashi A Planned operating lifts: - Subject to weather conditions all lifts should be open. See above main report for specific info for this morning. - The Utopia and Challenge pair lifts are normally rested on weekdays. - The top Yamabiko A-D courses close at 3:20pm until 27th March (at 3:10pm after that). - Skyline course closes at 4:10pm. - The Nagasaka quad lift is open for night skiing 11th-12th Feb (subject to change). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Lots of snow once again. It was really coming down hard through the night; this morning, too, it's falling so hard it looks like fog. And it keeps on coming. Should be a great day out there, and the slopes have been really empty, so the adventurous can enjoy some powder skiing on the slopes. A better idea than going offpiste for awhile, really. It's going to be a hard slog to climb in this much snow, and the risk of loose snow sluffs is very high. I've written it before, but deep, loose snow like this can be dangerous especially for boarders; get upside down in it and you can be in real danger. At the very least, it can be torture to try and get back up, or find a lost ski, etc. Maybe just wait a bit for it to settle, and then absolutely go out in the powder! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It sure was windy yesterday. I'm happy to report that it's calmer this morning. Just cloudy earlier but it's snowing lightly now and we are due some heavy (at times) snow today and into tomorrow. On the Valley official site, Tsugaike has 48cm of fresh snowfall noted. Don't know where that's coming from and what's going on there, but it's completely different from what all the other ski areas are reporting. I'm thinking typo. (Let's just say I won't be going there in the hope of that much deep this morning...). Nearby Cortina is reporting 1-3cm. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a clearer morning and there's even a bit of sun! Can't say I was expecting that as we were supposed to be in the middle of a snow storm. It didn't quite get that (in terms of snowfall anyway) with the ski area only reporting 2-10cm (base to top) during the day yesterday and not much overnight, by the looks. 15cm since yesterday on upper areas. Hmmmm. OK so we are still expecting heavy snow through tomorrow. I'll let you know how that goes! I don't think Naski made it out yesterday, probably doing whatever bright green vegetables do on their day off.
