  • Myoko Now: Sunday 6th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 79cm Snowfall at base this season 1251cm Posted on Sunday 6th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . OK, I know there are those who will doubt the total for today, after the big numbers yesterday. I would invite them to join me for the currently endless job of clearing two locations. But this is Myoko! At least, the Myoko we used to know. I was reminded of this last night when we had no gas service in the house. So it was time to look at old photos and try to remember where the meter and valve were located, dig down about two meters, and reset the regulator thing.... And then I remembered that 10 years ago I always put a protective cover over it, because the pressure of the snow will cause the meter to shut off. So it's off to the hardware store this morning to get some plastic sheets, the kind we use to cover windows and other things that get buried way down in there. So, sorry we're late today; I have a feeling some of the lifts are as well (many were not going until after 10am yesterday). Oh, and don't even try to go backcountry. Be careful even heading off course into deep untracked snow. It's light in a sense (like, nice and fluffy in the very top of the pack), but it's deep and dense and almost impossible to get out of (it took 20 minutes on snowshoes to get to my snow measuring area!). Ah, we work hard for our readers! Have fun, though; this is really insane snow and it's just fun to be out in all that white stuff. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 86cm Snowfall at base this season 838cm Posted on Sunday 6th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I'll post more tomorrow when hopefully things will be calmer but for now... just crazy snowfall the last day. I've put the snowfall numbers from the ski area in two chunks this morning - the chunk from yesterday and then the overnight. As you can see the total snowfall on the upper areas is a whopping 109cm and Hikage has also reported 100cm. We certainly have had a very large amount of snow and it is still snowing. Visibility is very limited on all but lower areas, where it's still kind of limited. Top lifts are delayed due to the snow. These conditions are not for everyone. Some will of course love them, some will wait for clearer skies to enjoy all this new snow. If you are out there, take care! Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (yesterday morning to mid afternoon): - Yamabiko (1615m): 39cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 50cm - Hikage (660m): 40cm - Nagasaka (616m): 40cm - Karasawa (563m): 30cm Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (yesterday mid afternoon to this morning): - Yamabiko (1615m): 70cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 70cm - Hikage (660m): 60cm - Nagasaka (616m): 50cm - Karasawa (563m): 40cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1615m): 450cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 375cm - Hikage (660m): 350cm - Nagasaka (616m): 340cm - Karasawa (563m): 270cm Various info: - Subject to weather conditions all lifts that plan to be open should be ok. See above main report for specific info for this morning. - The top Yamabiko A-D courses close at 3:20pm until 27th March (at 3:10pm after that). - Skyline course closes at 4:10pm. - The Nagasaka quad lift is planned to open for night skiing 11th-12th Feb (subject to change). • Myoko Now: Saturday 5th February 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 66cm Snowfall at base this season 1172cm Posted on Saturday 5th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is on. The snow is just pouring down, the roads are not plowed, the lifts are just starting to move: it's a snow day. We've already received 66cm (see photo), and the forecast is for a total of around a meter. Easy to achieve; that snow is coming down in many-cm-per-hour amounts. I was going to report on yesterday's great backcountry snow, which was deep but well settled, and pretty fast sliding, but that's all changed, of course. There are lots of drifts and indications of pretty good winds overnight, plus all this unsettled snow, so once again, it's going to be a bit wild wherever there's lots of ungroomed snow (which means all over the mountain). But it's also going to be fun. Get out there (if you can get up the roads to the mountain).
