- Myoko Now: Friday 18th February 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 1373cm Posted on Friday 18th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot more wind this morning, but still not a huge amount of snowfall. It's been strange the last 24 hours, really, with blasts of snow and then a bit of clearing. The low pressure area over the Sea of Japan is no more, though, so the winds are coming straight in from the northwest now — the classic look for heavy snow in Myoko. Those winds, though are really variable, shifting around from northeast to northwest, sometimes fairly calm, at other times bringing huge clouds of snow out of the sugi (cryptomeria) trees. It's windy enough at moments that it could interrupt lift operations, although the gondola at Akakan, perhaps the most affected by wind, is not running today. Should be up on the weekend, however. Not beautiful snow today either, with lots of pretty big, heavy graupel (soft hail) balls coming down. Makes me think we might get some winter thunder, which often happens when we have a heavy fall of graupel (those bouncing little balls of snow can generate a lot of static electricity, it seems). - Nozawa Now: Friday 18th February 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 946cm Posted on Friday 18th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A kind of curious 24 hours. We were expecting snow through the day yesterday but it actually ended up quite bright at times and overnight we didn't get quite as much snow as we were perhaps expecting. Upper areas have had a good 25-35cm (20cm of that up top overnight), very respectable of course, but not as much down in lower areas. The ski area is reporting around 10cm at Hikage and Nagasaka. There is still quite a lot of snow on the forecast, particularly for Sunday through Monday. Hopefully that will bring us a lot of snow across the mountain. Fresh snowfall recorded by the ski area (since early yesterday morning through 7:20am): - Yamabiko (1615m): 35cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 23cm - Hikage (660m): 11cm - Nagasaka (616m): 10cm - Karasawa (563m): 5cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1615m): 380cm - Uenotaira (1407m): 335cm - Hikage (660m): 290cm - Nagasaka (616m): 285cm - Karasawa (563m): 200cm Nozawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Friday 18th February 2022 Total snowfall at base 946cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 49 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 86cm (6th February) November 2021 snowfall 15cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 272cm reported on 11 days January 2022 snowfall 384cm reported on 22 days February 2022 snowfall 275cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. - Hakuba Now: Friday 18th February 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 515cm Posted on Friday 18th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's more fresh snow on the ground to report this morning. Every morning there are three bits of observed snow info coming in to make this report (myself plus two other trusted people in Hakuba). Often the numbers are very similar but sometimes they differ. I'll tell you what they are for this morning - 7cm, 12cm and 16cm. That middle one is my measurement and what goes on the report but always keep in mind that it can vary - especially in such a relatively wide region. Happo-one are this morning winning the 'most snow reported' award with 30cm across their upper areas and 15cm down at the lower Nakiyama area. Cortina are reporting 10-15cm. So there's a good new layer out there to play in this morning. Light snow is currently falling, but it probably won't last too long and should ease by this afternoon. We might start tomorrow with some sunshine. Forecasts are still looking very good for some potentially heavy snow falling Sunday night through Tuesday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this seas 1095cm Posted on Friday 18th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday we had a period when there was quite a lot of blue sky and sunshine; light snow at other times. It was rather mixed weather. Apparently areas to the north of our region got unexpected amounts of snowfall. So the forecast was off there, and it feels like the overnight was off a bit too. We were expecting quite a lot of snow and while Kagura is actually reporting 40cm, down in town there has been less than expected. This morning Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 10-20cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama earlier on was reporting 10cm. It is snowing now so hopefully we will get some more today. Heavier snow once again is there on the forecast for Sunday onwards for the first half of the coming week. Hopefully that forecast will turn out to be spot on! There's some windy conditions messing around with ski area operations this morning: Kagura: The Tashiro Area is closed for the day and Kagura is open up to the gondola at the start of the day. Naeba: The Number 2 gondola and top areas closed at the start of the day. Yuzawa Kogen: The top area is closed. GALA Yuzawa and other ski areas appear to be opening as planned. Got up early this morning expecting that I'd have to plow heaps of new snow, but there was very little overnight, and the snowfall really only began around 6:30. So only five centimeters to report, but only up to the time of snow poking. It's falling pretty steadily now, maybe some 2-3cm/hour. It's a bit colder than the past few days, too, with an overnight low here at base level of about -7°C, and it's still -5°. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 503cm Posted on Thursday 17th February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It was snowing through the day yesterday and I reckon about 10-15cm on upper areas during the day. This morning there's more snow and ski areas are reporting the numbers in the list below. A good 15-20cm in lower areas and more than that higher up with Happo-one reporting 37cm at Usagidaira. Conditions should be really good out there. This morning there's still (light) snow falling (at the time of writing) but also some signs that the sun might be able to break through the clouds in places. But then again the forecast is for snow during the day today... so maybe not! (I'm thinking... not. I expect snow). The forecasts are looking good for more snow over the coming week too. Snow today into tomorrow morning and then quite a lot later Saturday onwards. If they are right it looks like we should be in for a very fine second half of February. Obviously that is great to report... long may it continue! ----- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far [*upper areas] [As reported by official sources at time of this report] Hakuba Goryu: 760cm Hakuba 47: 720cm Hakuba Happo-one: 629cm Hakuba Cortina: 852cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 712cm ----- Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall this morning: - Upper: 25cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 380cm - Toomi: 180cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall this morning: - Summit: 20cm - Lower: 15cm Official snow depth: - Top: 380cm - Base: 185cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall this morning: - Kurobishi: 25cm - Riesen: 20cm - Usagidaira: 37cm - Nakiyama: 15cm Official snow depth: - Kurobishi: 390cm - Usagidaira: 267cm - Nakiyama: 140cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall this morning: - Mountain Side: 20cm - Village Side: 20cm Official snow depth: - Mountain Side: 230cm - Village Side: 100cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall this morning: - Upper: 25cm Official snow depth: - Upper: 377cm - Lower: 145cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: - 365cm Hakuba Cortina Reported snowfall (12 hours): - Summit: 23cm - Lower: 15cm Official snow depth: - Top: 385cm - Base: 272cm Hakuba Now 2021-2022 season Data as Thursday 17th February 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 503cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 47 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 54cm (14th January) November 2021 snowfall 29cm reported on 4 days December 2021 snowfall 130cm reported on 12 days January 2022 snowfall 228cm reported on 20 days February 2022 snowfall 116cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba.
