Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 67cm
Snowfall at base this season 1586cm

Posted on Wednesday 23rd February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

A late report on this Emperor's Birthday holiday; it's just part of continuing to do battle with historic, amazing snowfall.

It's great for the resorts — except that I know they're fighting loose snow avalanches on entry roads and other locations — but not so good for anybody thinking about going backcountry. Meaning they really shouldn't. It will be so hard to climb in 67cm of fresh, and the risks of loose snow avalanches is so high right now that it's a good day to work on your turns on the piste. Which will also be covered in powder, as we're still getting a few centimeters of new snow every hour.

Didn't see a lot of cars heading up the hill to the resort; hopefully they headed up the better-plowed-less-steep prefectural road No. 390. Akakan is having a free concert Kohmi Hirose this afternoon; apparently she's pretty famous if not my particular cup of miso. Ski by around 3, the resort says.

Akakura Kanko:

Lotte Arai Resort

Everything pending as of this report, but the top Big Bowl freeride area is closed. Record snow, though, a local tells me

Kurohime Kogen Snow Park
