- Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 22nd February 2022
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 59cm Snowfall at base this seas 1198cm Posted on Tuesday 22nd February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday was cold and snowy. Very 'mid-winter'. By 6pm, there was 24cm of snow on our main measuring point. That was cleared and this morning there is an additional 35cm. So that's 59cm of new snowfall since yesterday morning. That number is more than any ski area is reporting, and that is probably a mix of them being shy about snowfall when it's heavy and also due to the somewhat vague 'since last night' wording that goes on there. But beyond the nerdy numbers... there's just lots of new snow! And there's more due today and tomorrow too. It's kind of light to moderate snow at the moment and -3C in town. Thankfully it's not as windy this morning and so all ski areas are able to open. There may be a few delayed lifts and courses that are closed as the ski areas cope with the snow, but generally places are open. ----- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 400cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 30cm since last night Official snow depth: 380cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 370cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 340cm Kagura Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 50cm since yesterday Official snow depth: Top: 400cm Base: 320cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 390cm Maiko Snow Resort Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 20-40cm (since last night) Official snow depth: 410cm (top) 280cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 390cm (top) 300cm (base) Naeba Official snow depth: 300cm (top) 250cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 400cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 400cm (top) 280cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 330cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 310cm Yuzawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Tuesday 22nd February 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 1198cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 57 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 101cm (6th February) November 2021 snowfall 10cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 311cm reported on 14 days January 2022 snowfall 481cm reported on 24 days February 2022 snowfall 396cm reported on 17 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . You can tell when it's a bit of a mad weather morning... everyone's favourite green vegetable, Naski, is sitting it out and not making an appearance on the Hikage base area. Can't say I blame him/her, as I get older these kind of conditions aren't my thing either. I do like watching the snow fall though. Oh ok, the report. Yes we have a good amount of new snow, it's quite windy (especially on the mountain) and visibility is limited. The ski area reported up to 50cm of snowfall on the upper areas since yesterday afternoon. Add that to the 20cm from yesterday daytime and we get 70cm of snow up there. Lower areas reporting over 30cm. Summary: lots. And it seems there is going to be a lot more on the way over the next couple of days. :) The Nagasaka gondola and top lifts are not moving this morning due to the strong winds up at the top of the mountain. That includes the Yamabiko quads, the Uenotaira quad and Skyline connecting pair. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Lots of snow, and lots of wind yesterday afternoon into the night. It's calm at the base of Akakan right now, but I got a call to let me know that the wind is really blowing at Lotte Arai; the lift information hasn't been updated since 8am, so they might be having some delays. I doubt the freeride areas will be open, so be sure to check the website before you go out. Otherwise, lots of pretty heavy, wind-affected snow. It is really dense; even on snowshoes it was a struggle to get out to my snow testing spot. It's another day of, don't get upside in the deep stuff, or you might not get out! And it is still coming down hard. The snowpack numbers for most of the resorts are also up a lot, which doesn't often happen right away after heavy snow. I also have a pretty cold -5°C still at base, so it's a cold one.
