Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata
New snowfall at base 2cm
Snowfall at base this season 586cm
Posted on Wednesday 2nd March 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here.
There was sufficient snow last night to cover the grooming tracks almost everywhere so lots of soft stuff around.
There is fog at the summit with bursts of medium wind. Viz though is about 5m so enough to see by.
Going down, Paradise has the best powder but viz drops to 3m or less at the top.
Utopia is in the thick of it as well as the upper part of Kurohime where there is a crunch under the powder all the way down.
The Chuo bowl main run has the next best powder, the rest are patchy.
Disappointment of the day are the Sunrise slopes which are strewn with leg rattling nodules. Give it a miss.
Omori is likely to be just groomers as it is much lower down and snowfall less last night.
It should get brighter as the day progresses and the sun is already trying to get out here and there so the fog may go.
Basically a good day to be out.
Official snow depth
Summit: 180cm
Paradise: 260cm
Chuo: 260cm
Utopia: 300cm
Uwanodai: 180cm
All areas and lifts should be opening as scheduled, subject to weather.
