The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A late report on this Emperor's Birthday holiday; it's just part of continuing to do battle with historic, amazing snowfall. It's great for the resorts — except that I know they're fighting loose snow avalanches on entry roads and other locations — but not so good for anybody thinking about going backcountry. Meaning they really shouldn't. It will be so hard to climb in 67cm of fresh, and the risks of loose snow avalanches is so high right now that it's a good day to work on your turns on the piste. Which will also be covered in powder, as we're still getting a few centimeters of new snow every hour. Didn't see a lot of cars heading up the hill to the resort; hopefully they headed up the better-plowed-less-steep prefectural road No. 390. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's sunny! Well, down here at base anyway. Higher up there is still a lot of cloud and snowing. Snow is still there on the forecast for today so it'll be interesting to see how the weather develops this morning. Today is a national holiday (Emperor's Birthday) and so it will be busier than just a normal weekday. And talking about snow... we have had a lot more of it since yesterday. (I'm sorry I missed the snowfall update yesterday afternoon, so the numbers below are since 3pm yesterday and do not include snowfall during the day. Add some extra snow.) Beyond today we will probably get to enjoy some clearer conditions and perhaps a good portion of sunshine. It should be calm too. Good weather to enjoy all of this snow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We have had more snow over the last 24 hours (most of the number at base during the day yesterday) with ski areas generally reporting up to 20cm since yesterday on mountain, the exception being Cortina who report 35cm. (Cortina is now reporting a total of over 10m of snowfall this season on its upper areas. Yey!) It has still been snowing lightly this morning in places but stopped for the moment. And the sun seems to be trying to break through the cloud. Webcams show it is still snowing a bit at higher elevations. There's an event being held at Happo-one from today through Friday. That means that there will be course restrictions around the course. After all this snow, some clearer weather is ahead of us over the coming days. Some nice weather to enjoy the powder would be sweet, and I can't wait to get out there this morning. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. So we have had more snow and it's still coming down. Madarao is only reporting 20cm this morning which was a bit surprising. My measure told me 34cm. This snow should continue through into tomorrow, perhaps easing off by night time. 'Just' 31cm of snowfall at base to report this morning but I note that the ski area itself is saying there has been 73cm on upper areas. Total accumulation up there is now over 22m. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 53cm Snowfall at base this season 1519cm Posted on Tuesday 22nd February 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow and more snow. The snow walls in this area are now officially crazy; got a call from one of the head guys of our little ku, or local district, warning about the cornices that are forming at the top of the walls and falling off, blocking traffic. The monster rotary plows that finish up the morning, following the pusher plows, don't have cutters (big vertical bars) that go up that high.... So the walls are nice and straight and now, thanks to the wind, topped with cornices. I figure the snow is about 6 meters deep around my house now, because I can pretty much stand on them and be most of the way up the big cherry trees that line my yard. And it's still snowing. The Akakura resorts are now near five meters, which would be a record for your reporter, I am pretty sure (and I've been banging these reports out for a long time. I forget how long, in fact....) The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . More snow, and then some more snow! 56cm of fresh reported by the ski area since yesterday morning on the top Yamabiko area and up to 45cm being reported from lower areas. Excellent. Top areas are open this morning and conditions will be deep and totally super. Limited visibility up there along with that deep-ness, so while it's very exciting real care is required. It's not as windy this morning and Naski has decided that conditions are good enough to make an appearance - and looking very jolly too. The snow is due to continue through tomorrow. It is very possible that this will be the last 'big event' storm of the season (though maybe not!), so the more the better I say.
