The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We got some good snowfall overnight. It was snowing quite heavily in the last few hours of the day yesterday and there was more in the early hours. The ski area is reporting 15-24cm across the mountain and I have measured 21cm. Visibility might be limited this morning but the fresh snow should be fun. There is only a handful of runs not yet open, which is great to see. From today through Monday, lifts are opening 30 minutes early. So that's an 8am start for the gondolas and base lifts. Light snow is forecast for the day today. We might get some clearer skies on New Years Eve and New Years Day, but it will be back to snow beyond that. * Sorry, I mis-spelt Kandahar in the report yesterday. Yes, I do know that it is not Kandahara. Doh! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A cold day yesterday with limited visibility for a large part and snow falling. More steady snowfall to report since yesterday with ski areas talking of up to 15cm of fresh on upper slopes. It's 5+cm down at base since my last report. We aren't expecting much cm of snow over the next couple of days and maybe some sun. It is just snowing lightly in places at the moment but it feels like it might just clear up somewhat. The Grat quad lift at Happo-one is scheduled to be open from 12:00pm today. The official snow depth at a few ski areas is now above 2m. The New Year should be bringing more fresh snow. All good. More adjustments coming to the report tomorrow as ski areas are all now either fully open or nearly at that point. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is feeling much colder this morning, I am pleased to report. Niseko Village are reporting -16C up top there. Brrrr. So yes, temperatures are back to more like how we expect them, and there has also been a nice layer of fresh snow. I have measured 15cm, with most of that coming while most of us were sleeping. There might be more than that higher up and while I'm not sure it will be enough for a proper reset, further snow is forecast over these last few days of 2022. It is snowing now. Is that that chance of some sun on New Years Eve I see? At the start of the day, the gondola lifts at Village and Annupuri are on hold due to wind. Interestingly, those two ski areas are also showing their top lifts (Wonderland and Jumbo Number 4) as 'on hold' this morning. I am not sure why, but perhaps their opening is imminent? --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5℃, 15cm snowfall in 12hs, strong west wind, poor visibility. Moiwa 800m: -8.2℃, WSW8.7m/s, 20cm snowfall from midnight, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -9℃, snowstorm, poor visibility, snowdrift development. Hanazono Hirafu: -10℃, ESE 0.5m/s, 10cm snowfall. Niseko Village 1000m: -9.4℃, NW2.9m/s, Coastal data: Benkei cape NW23m/s, Kamui cape WSW15m/s, 1012hPa, 1.6m waves. The isobars got tighter under the wintery pressure system from midnight, strong snow and wind are blowing over the west side of the mountain range. Looking at snow cat's fracture test operated at 800m elevation at Moiwa, the layer between newly formed 30cm snowdrifts and 80cm wet snow can easily fracture. According to the weather data and snowfall transition, the avalanche risk is high on the cornice and knoll slopes over 900m elevation throughout the afternoon. The gates opening is yet to be decided. Please follow the patrols instructions. The snow under the 800m elevation and in the tree runs is in good condition. Skiing and snowboarding are inherently dangerous sports. It started in the afternoon and continued through the night... and now. More is on the way, so the mountain is enjoying a good reset. It feels colder too and should be getting colder still. Viz is naturally better lower down which is also less crowded. That said, there really is no sense of too many people yet, however, the buses are coming in. Tomorrow morning should be clear but then getting cloudy again so get an early start. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . There's some fresh snow on the ground this morning and it looks like there's up to 20cm at higher elevations. Limited visibility in all but lower areas at the start of the day. I can just about see the shape of the sun behind some clouds, though light snow is forecast for the day. Today is the start of the New Year holidays for many people and it is traditionally a busy time of the season. Expect more people to be around over the next few days. ----- Apart from my observed snowfall number every morning, all of the other numbers in this report are numbers that are being reported by ski areas themselves. I check them each morning and I update them on the list below. It can certainly be somewhat frustrating that even the same ski area can put out two seemingly inconsistent numbers on the same day from the same place. For example, Happo-one this morning are reporting 15cm of new snowfall at Usagidaira (1,400m) on their website. They are also reporting 20cm from the top of the Riesen quad lift, at the same 1,400m elevation. I have probably said this before but it's just best not to spend too much energy worrying over these details. Take a step back and look at the wider and more general picture.
