  • Zao Now: Tuesday 10th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 205cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The anticipated snow fell so new powder all around. It continues to fall although very lightly and likely to last all day and through the night but not bringing a lot. The bad news is that it is hard to see it! I've had to keep amending this report as the visibility seems to be getting worse and lower. The top of Kurohime and Utopia is thick and windy. The ropeway up to the top is like travelling through a cloud and buffeted by wind. No vista views of the snow monsters today I think - only those directly below - just. A nightmare coming down in 1m viz, ice patches and sudden drift patches. Don't go up there! There is still plenty of powder lower down especially on the long stretch of the Omori where Viz is clear. • Myoko Now: Tuesday 10th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 338cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Getting an early start on a snowy Tuesday. It was pretty warm yesterday, with some rain in the late afternoon/early evening so it was great to see it change over to a pretty steady fall of snow. We had 36cm when I measured earlier, and it keeps on falling so I think we'll break 40cm pretty easily. Colder today, but it is heavy, wet snow. It was windy during the night, but it's fairly quiet now, with a light wind from the north coming in. One good rumble of thunder very early in the morning (some of us have to get up early to move snow!) which is always interesting and a sign of heavy snowfall. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this season 260cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. 15-20cm fresh snow reported by the ski area this morning and it is still snowing, hopefully for most of the day today. Limited to poor visibility and some windy conditions on the mountain. Lifts are moving at reduced speed due to the wind and there may be some stoppages. Can hardly see anything on the Hikage webcam. (It looks like Naski isn't out there, perhaps taking a rest today!) Sun and fine weather is forecast for tomorrow and the next few days. Friday and Saturday is going to be warm (nearly 10C at base kind of warm, with rain - not great). But it's good to see some more snow incoming beyond that on Sunday. :) Fresh snowfall reported by the ski area at 7am (since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko: 20cm - Uenotaira: 15cm - Hikage: 15cm - Nagasaka: 15cm - Karasawa: 15cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko: 200cm - Uenotaira: 190cm - Hikage: 125cm - Nagasaka: 110cm - Karasawa: 75cm All lifts now normally operating except these lifts: - Challenge pair (usually closed on weekdays) - Utopia pair (usually closed on weekdays) - Hikage quad (due to maintenance) All courses are now open except the following: - Mukobayashi - Hachiman - Kamoshika - Kandahar (restrictions) Planned night skiing (Nagasaka quad): - Every Saturday until 25th March 2023 Nozawa Now 2022-2023 season Data as of Tuesday 10th January 2023 Total snowfall at base 260cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 22 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 34cm (26th December and 4th January) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 101cm reported on 13 days January 2023 snowfall 159cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. • Shiga Kogen Now: Tuesday 10th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 28cm Snowfall at base this season 208cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen and we have some wild conditions at the start of the day. It's cold, it's snowing, it's windy and visibility is low. Kumanoyu reports 30cm of fresh snow this morning. The good thing is the fresh snow -- and it's great quality snow too. The less good is that various lifts are on hold at the start of the day, so only limited areas are available for those wanting to brave the weather. In contrast to what we have today, clear skies and sunshine are due tomorrow. It should be great. Then it is going to warm up (more than we would like) into Saturday, though colder conditions should be back from Sunday. All over the place!! • Hakuba Now: Tuesday 10th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 226cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Lots of fresh snow, yes! First of all, the snowfall that ski areas are reporting this morning. Drum roll, please: Hakuba Happo-one: 50cm (Riesen), 35cm (Usagidaira), 20cm (Nakiyama) Hakuba Goryu: 40cm Hakuba Cortina: 40cm (top), 35cm (base) Hakuba 47: 30cm (top), 20cm (base) Nice numbers there. 40-50cm on mountain. And there's a good 20+cm around base areas too. I just love it when I can report good snowfall. The current (windy) conditions though mean that some lifts are affected. The top lifts are Happo-one aren't open at the start of the day and there is some disruption at Goryu/47 too. There may be more. I don't want to spoil the feel-good of this report, but the coming days needs to be mentioned. Tomorrow should be sunny and not too warm - and so an excellent day after all this snow. Beyond that it will be warming up to Saturday when we will probably get rained on as well as being warm. There's snow due again on Sunday though, so the pain shouldn't be too prolonged! --------------- Total snowfall accumulation this season so far (in upper areas) [The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated every morning] ABLE Hakuba Goryu: 334cm Hakuba 47: 275cm Hakuba Happo-one: 199cm Hakuba Cortina: 298cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort: 312cm * There is often a delay of one day in new numbers being reported --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu Reported snowfall: Upper: 40cm (Alps Daira) Official snow depth: Upper: 245cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba 47 Reported snowfall since last night: Upper: 30cm Base: 20cm Official snow depth: Top: 245cm Base: 125cm Hakuba Cortina Top: 40cm Base: 35cm Official snow depth: 220cm Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: Kurobishi: 0cm (not updated) Usagidaira: 35cm Top of Riesen quad: 50cm (social media) Nakiyama: 20cm Official snow depth: Kurobishi: 220cm (not updated) Usagidaira: 144cm Nakiyama: 75cm Hakuba Iwatake Snow Field Reported snowfall: Mountain Side: 20cm Village Side: 20cm Official snow depth: Mountain Side: 100cm Village Side: 30cm Hakuba Norikura Onsen Official snow depth: 220cm Hakuba Valley Kashimayari Official snow depth: 100cm Jigatake Official snow depth: 70cm Tsugaike Mountain Resort Reported snowfall: Upper: 40cm Official snow depth: Upper: 220cm Lower: 79cm White Resort Hakuba Sanosaka Official snow depth: 90cm Hakuba Now 2022-2023 season Data as Tuesday 10th January 2023 Total snowfall at base so far 226cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 24 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 29cm (24th December) November 2022 snowfall 0cm December 2022 snowfall 164cm reported on 17 days January 2023 snowfall 62cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Hakuba. • Niseko Now: Monday 9th January 2023

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 458cm Posted on Monday 9th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here There might only be 10cm or so of it, most of it falling overnight, but it's top quality snow this morning. And, of course, probably a bit more of it as you go higher up. It doesn't feel too windy, so it should be a very fine morning. As I write this, it's quite bight in some directions and very light snow is falling. Beyond the snow we are expecting today and into tomorrow, it still looks like the second half of the week is going to be much milder with lots of sunshine. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -4C, 15cm feathery snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -5.8C, WNW2.4m/s, 20cm snowfall, small snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -8.1C, W5.8m/s, 20cm snowfall, moderate wind with drifting snow. Mizuno no Sawa: -6.9C, WNW4.1m/s, Hanazono 1000m: -7.8℃, SSE1.4m/s, 15cm snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW10m/s, Kamui cape WSW12m/s, 1014hPa, 0.9m waves. The isobars tightened during the morning generating moderate westerly wind and snowfall above 1100m elevation. The weather below 700m and above 1000m is completely different. After evaluating test results and weather data, the overall avalanche risk is low today. 30cm of light feathery snow is blanketing the forests below 1000m. Chair lifts in Niseko were extended from 1000m to 1150m a few decades ago, which increased the number of avalanche accidents. The peak chairs have made accessing the steep slopes above 1000m much easier, and as a result, many people dropped into hazardous slopes and eventually were caught in avalanches. The snow condition is changing every day, every hour. We demand everyone to be humble towards nature and not to be overconfident of their skills. Avalanches run along the gully line, it is best to avoid riding the bottom. The snow is quite fantastic today. Ducking ropes is strictly prohibited in Niseko. Have you switched your beacon on? Beware of sluffs in steep slopes, and it is highly recommended to avoid simultaneous riding in leeward slopes with soft slabs. Surface slab avalanches are still to be expected in knoll terrains. There will never be 100% safety in this sport. Have a nice day. --------------- Ski area information for Monday 9th January 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
