And, in places, there's now just about 2cm of it on the ground... take a look at the image from the Happo-one gondola base station as of 8:00am (below) to get an idea. (It has to be also said that go just a little bit further down and it's raining --- but let's not dwell on that!) The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Greetings Niseko friends. Hey, I have some fresh snow to report! Yes, indeed. I just measured 4cm of it outside my place and it is still snowing in some areas, though there is also some patches of blue sky appearing in others around the mountain and it is quite bright. I wouldn't expect the snowfall to continue. This is not a full reset, of course, but I'm excited to see it. Snow is just such a truly wonderful thing. I feel humbled by its beauty. There's always going to be some 'last snow of the season'. Hopefully this isn't it, but there's also a chance that it might be. We're probably going to be having more sun than anything else for at least a few days from Sunday onwards. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5C, 1cm new snow, sunny. Moiwa 800m: -5.1C, W4.2m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -8.7C, W5.2m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -7.3C, NW3.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -8.4C, light winds. Hanazono#3: -4.5C, NNW3.9m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW9m/s, Kamui Cape WSW8m/s, 1022hPa, 1.0m waves. This morning Hirafu patrol report that they have closed off a large area of super course due to the high risk of full depth avalanches. A long crack has also opened up at the bottom of Moiwa Shirakaba Course. Full depth avalanches frequently occur on the sidewalls of strictly off limits areas Haru no Taki and Yu no Sawa. The risk of large-scale full depth avalanches is increasing particularly on the Annupuri side(SE) of Yu no Sawa. Do not ignore Niseko Rules and use Yu no Sawa as a descent route back to your lodgings. Expect a large-scale full depth avalanche to occur in Backbowl, Osawa or Moiwa bowl anytime soon. Avoid the valley bottoms over the weekend. The mountains are in a freeze/thaw cycle and rapidly transitioning into spring. Data for the last four days will be published in the annual report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After lift disruption and rubbish weather yesterday, lifts should should be back to normal this morning and conditions should be more pleasant. And - it's snowing in some places! Just a bit, and don't expect it to last, but there is a thin layer in places and Hanazono is reporting 2-3cm. Hurray! Nice to get some fresh after a period of none. It feels colder too, of course. There's also some blue sky to see in places. There should be some sunshine today and tomorrow too, a bit warmer tomorrow, and maybe a bit more snow on Thursday. That would be jolly nice. :) I heard from a few people yesterday who are coming here during March, making the point that not everyone wants to (or is able to) be here during the peak season. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here We had a nice start yesterday but it's a much gloomier start to this Friday morning. First up, it's raining. Not great. There's some fog and limited visibility out there too, especially higher up. I'm going to give the fog icon a go this morning. The better news is that tomorrow should be clearer and bright and sunny once again. Over the last few days it has felt like winter has left us. But, having said that, there appears to be a chance of some snow on Monday. Hmmm. Once I post this report, I am going to have some toast and ponder. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: +4C, light rain. Moiwa 800m: +1.4C, E6.2m/s, no new snow, foggy, bad visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -0.4C, SSE4.7m/s, thick fog, bad visibility. Mizuno no Sawa: 0.0C, S9.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -0.2C, SSW11.2m/s. Hanazono#3: +1.4C, SW4.7m/s, frozen. Coastal data: Benkei cape SSW6m/s, Kamui cape S11m/s, 1011hPa, 0.8m waves. Currently raining from the passing low pressure system. There is heavy fog with poor visibility above 700m. Expect a northerly wind to pick up above 800m following the passing of the low pressure system. With the continued snow melt, the risk of block collapse from cracks and full depth avalanches is increasing in valleys and gullies. Also beware there is more water in the creeks. Peak gates will be closed due to the poor visibility. The thick fog makes challenging conditions for even veteran grooming operators, feeling their way when the visibility is down to zero. Conditions off piste are not good either. Today may be the day to hit the onsen early. This information is provided to prevent accidents for ski resort users. Have a nice day. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a fine start to the day here. Blue sky, sun, cloud. I'm posting 2cm of snow which is from yesterday morning just after my report. And it's looking unlikely that I will have more to report for at least a few days. The forecasts all pretty much say the same - the same kind of mix as this morning with variations on fine and cloudy, with milder temperatures. Having said that, it's a fairly chilly morning, in a pleasant way. And all being well, wind will not be an issue. Yes, it is a pleasant morning. I believe that today is the last planned day of the season for the small Asahigaoka near Kutchan Station. I have added the planned closing dates of the other ski areas to the below list. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -4C, refrozen, no new snow. Moiwa 800m: -4.2C, W7.2m/s, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -6.9C, W6.7m/s. Mizuno no Sawa: -5.9C, WNW5.8m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -6.2C, NNE3.5m/s. Hanazono#3: -3.5C, ESE2.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW8m/s, Kamui Cape SW15m/s, 1025hPa, 1.4m waves. We are on the edge of a high pressure ridge with strong SW winds at higher levels. Although there was no snowfall overnight, there was some shallow snowdrift development on leeward slopes. Tests showed a sudden drop and occasional cracks. Based on observations and data the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please prepare properly before leaving the ski area. Also listen to the patrols advice as they are there to protect your safety. Never wait in avalanche zones - like gullies, valleys or at the bottom of steep slopes. There is no safety in this sport, but with care fatal accidents can be avoided. Don't overestimate your knowledge and always be cautious. The Avalanche Report is n/a tomorrow due to a mission review. However data and observations will continue. Be careful of sudden changes in the weather.
