  • Nozawa Now: Monday 12th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 414cm Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Changing weather during the day yesterday from snow to sunshine, and a bit more snow overnight. The ski area yesterday was reporting 10-12cm of snow on upper slopes and this morning there's another 1-2cm being reported this morning. There is some snow falling this morning across the region, though it is holding off just now here outside my place. That might change at any moment. Having said that, we're expecting some sun today. (Kind of confusing!) What seems almost certain is sunny skies across the region tomorrow and temps starting to rise tomorrow and further still on Wednesday when it might get up to over 10C in the village during the day. Hmmm. Anyway, it's pretty cold this morning. Time to enjoy. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 421cm Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's cold and snowing. Not sure I was expecting this, as there was a bit of sun early morning, but I am over in Okushiga Kogen now and as I write this report it is actually snowing quite heavily. A look round the regions via webcam and it seems to be snowing across Shiga Kogen to varying degrees. Forecasts still show clearer skies and so perhaps it will stop and the clouds will start clearing... let's keep it coming! Clear skies are definitely due tomorrow morning - with those rising temps that we have been warned about for at least a few days. • Madarao Now: Monday 12th February 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 432cm Weather overview Light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Monday 12th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. We got a some snow during the day yesterday and some more overnight, though it didn't get up to 5cm by my measurement. (This morning the ski area appears to be reporting 20cm of fresh snow, but that seems odd to me; I am unable to report 20cm this morning). Whatever, it is keeping fairly cold early morning today and it should be a fun last day of the long weekend kind of morning. Interestingly there's more cloud now that earlier on, and some light snow too, though we are forecast clearer skies during the day today. OK, so, this coming week. It's going to be warm, perhaps a bit more every day until Thursday. And then a dip in temperatures around Friday. Tomorrow will be a day to enjoy clear skies and sunshine (probably). Let's see how this goes... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's a mostly cloudy start to the day over the mountain with some light snow still falling in places and up to 20cm of fresh being reported by ski areas. There's some blue sky and sun looking east. The next few days are probably going to be getting warmer. (I'm feeling closer to normal this morning, but still feel the need to get back to sleeping. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, without people involved, accidents would not happen. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the Patrols advice before going out the gates. More and more people are mindlessly ducking ropes. For some reason, a high proportion are Japanese. The Osaka Anchan group have been knowingly dropping into Yunosawa and Harunotaki too many times. Although its been decreasing lately, there are still lots of bad boys and hard men around. Do not duck the ropes to enter Osawa or Fujiwara. Do not enter strictly off limits areas. Niseko respects your freedom to ride off-piste, but you must use the gates. If the gates are closed, don't go. The snow is good. Do you have your beacon? It could save you or your friends life. I'm not feeling too good this morning, so forgive the brief words today. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -5°, 10cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -10.4°, N4.4m/s(18m/s gusts at dawn) 30cm snowdrift development. Mikaeri 764m:-10°, snow depth increasing, poor visibility,. Annupuri 1100m: -11.7°, NNW0.7m/s. The atmospheric pressure gradient steepened overnight, winds and snow increased and we had 30 to 40cm of snowdrift development above the 800m tree line. Although slab formation is weak, based on tests and data evaluation the general avalanche risk is low. Avoid cutting under knolls and cornices though, there is the possibility of causing an avalanche. Gates will open depending on lift operation. Remember that outside the gates is not part of the ski resort. Inside the gates is though and there are rules to be followed. If the width of isobars narrows expect snow storms. Be careful of a sudden weather change. The mountains are a dangerous environment and sometimes even your knowledge and experience wont help. Always be cautious. The snow isn't too bad. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 756cm Posted on Saturday 10th February 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. This morning I have just slightly over 1cm of snow to report. (Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting 5-10cm, so perhaps we can expect up to that much higher on the mountain). It is snowing early on and hopefully we will get more through the day. As I mentioned, it's very likely to get warmer in the coming week, a Japan-wide thing, so anything we can get today and tomorrow before it does that is most welcome. Niseko was featured on one of the main Japanese TV evening news spots again last night. It was another of those 'Niseko boom'-style pieces, this time with some Chinese New Year shades thrown in. There were lots of Dr Evil-style numbers being thrown around again. Apparently, the 'target' is now very much individual travel(l)ers with extremely large wallets (rather than groups). Hence the posh bags shop, etc. They didn't mention anything about the snow. Anyway, all lifts are go* and let's Happy Chinese New Year! (* ones that plan to go) ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -6°, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: -9.8°, E0.5m/s. Mikaeri 764m: -10°, minor snowfall and snowdrift development. Kamui Cape WSW3m/s, 1019hPa, wave 0.6m. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flat, the sea and mountains are calm, there has been no significant snowfall and the snow pack has stabilised. The general avalanche risk is low. All gates are expected to be open. Please prepare before heading out the gates. Outside of the gates is not part of the ski resort. Do duck ropes looking for fresh snow. Never enter Strictly Off Limits Areas Haru no Taki or YunoSawa. Also, groups have been seen ducking the rope below Gate 2 to enter Osawa. If you do, everyones lift pass will be confiscated. Traversing under cornices is always dangerous and can trigger an avalanche. There will be many people out of bounds today, including in the valley below you. Please consider their safety. The ski slopes will be fantastic this morning. Yesterday's tracks below 700m have step up hard. Note. This sport is great, but not very safe. Have a nice day. ------------------ Individual ski area information for Saturday 10th February 2024 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
