The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko on this middle day of March. And... I have a little more snowfall to report from yesterday afternoon. Ski areas are reporting up to 5cm of fresh and my own measurement is just over 2cm. Early on we have a lot of cloud and some blue sky. While we can expect to get some clearer skies and sun during the day today, there is more snow expected in the coming days. It has been a bit windy but the lifts all seem to be opening as planned. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base : -2°, 5cm new snow, snowdrift development at midnight. Moiwa 800m: -5.6°, NNW7.3m/s , cornice and snowdrift development at midnight. Mikaeri 764m: -8.6°, NNW7.3m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -7.0°, WNW6.2m/s. Village 1000: -5.7°, WNW4.9m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -6.5°, WNW4.9m/s. Hanazono 3 : -4.3°, NNW0.0m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape: NNW11m/s. Kamui Cape NNE4m/s (max N25-39m/s @ 10pm), 1019hPa, wave 0.8m A strong north wind blew until midnight causing heavy snowdrift development up to 50cm in depressions on south facing valleys above 800m. Based on observation and data snowdrifts have started to stabilise, however the avalanche risk continues above 1000m where new snow has fallen. Always be careful in valleys and gullies where there is a large elevation change, like on Mt Yotei. Valleys and gullies should never be used as ski routes. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please follow the Patrols advice. BackBowl sidewalls and the Osawa cornice slope near 1000m are also dangerous areas. Conditions are different to yesterday, better to avoid these areas. This information is provided to ski resort users to prevent out of bounds accidents. Although beacons aren't mandatory, you should have them. You will have a better chance of saving each other if you have them. Ducking ropes to go out of bounds is strictly prohibited in Niseko. Please respect Niseko rules. A pamphlet explaining the rules is available at all ticket counters. Even though it's spring at the base, it's still winter higher up in the mountains. It will be a mild over the next few days and there is a chance of some rain. Hopefully not much if it happens. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Just under 1cm of snow since yesterday. I feel I can justify the 1cm in this report. Perhaps a few more higher up? As I write this the sun is out. It's a kind of bright and hazy/overcast kind of fine weather, and I wonder if we'll get lovely deep blue skies or if it might stay like it is now. I'm a bit early this morning, but expect ski areas to be open as planned. There is just a few more days of night skiing left this season. Wednesday 20th is the last planned day for that. Why that day? It's a national holiday. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base 6am: -3°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -4.1°, SW0.3m/s. Mikaeri 764m: -6°, SW0.3m/s, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -7.0°, WNW8.1m/s, trace new snow, minor snowdrift development. Village 1000: -4.5°, WNW5.4m/s. Hanazono 1000m: -6.7°, NNE3.3m/s. Hanazono 3 : -3.0°, N0.5m/s. Although there is an approaching low pressure front, the pressure gradient is shallow and both the seas and mountains are calm. There is a relatively strong west wind at 1500m, but there has been little snowdrift development. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the Patrols advice before going out the gates. Remember outside the gates is a wild natural mountain, not a ski resort. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. There was slightly under 1cm of snow that I can justify reporting this morning. Earlier on it was pretty cold and overcast, but now that is some blue sky and sun and temps are milder. What's more, the wind isn't being as naughty and all scheduled lifts are open. Hurray! ------------------ Yesterday, it came to my attention that visitors will be paying 'up to 2000 yen per night' on a new just-approved tax on accommodation in Niseko Town starting in November of this year. This new excite tax is expected to raise over 160 million yen for the local government. The funds will be allocated 'to improve local transportation and other measures to improve tourism'. (If I am not mistaken, I think a similar kind of tax was introduced in Kutchan Town in 2019*). The amount to be paid will range from 100 yen to 2,000 yen based on the nightly room charge per person, as below: Accommodation fee below 5,001 yen: 100 yen tax Accommodation fee between 5,001-20,000 yen: 200 yen tax Accommodation fee between 20,000-50,000 yen: 500 yen tax Accommodation fee between 50,000-100,000 yen: 1,000 yen tax Accommodation fee over 100,000 yen: 2,000 yen tax So don't worry; to be caught in the 2,000-yen zone, your accommodation charge must be 100,000 yen a night or more. I guess such people can very easily afford an extra 2000 yen. (They might even still be able to buy posh bags and stuff when they come). My initial thought was shock that some people might be paying over 100,000 yen per person per night to sleep up the road from my place. I hope it includes a jolly good breakfast with quality toast options**. Another thought: I'd prefer this method of increasing funds to keep motoring on with all the 'progress' rather than my local resident taxes being increased. Another thought: Some accommodations in Niseko charge less than 5,001 yen for a night?! (Really? Honto ni?) Like I said before, it sure feels like things are changing........ * I am not involved in accommodation or tourist businesses. If you are reading this and feel I have any of these details incorrect, please let me know, and I'll adjust and explain as necessary. I do not wish to mislead! ** Actually, no. This tax will be on accommodation charges only and will not include charges for meals or other expenses. ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -4℃, no snowfall and frozen. The isobars are starting to spread, however a strong westerly wind will persist above 1150m during the morning. Gate 2 & 3 will not open during the morning. The wind is strong but the snowfall is scarce. Snowdrifts generated by wind-blown snow have accumulated in the gullies and caution is required in gullies around 1000m elevation. Shallow avalanches are to be expected in some areas, and skiing gullies should be avoided. The season is shifting to Spring, however winter continues in the mountains and safety is never guaranteed. You should not put your life in stake for skiing powder snow. Death terminates all possibilities. Thinking that you’ll be fine is just being overconfident, and Nature will have no restraints punishing your mistakes. The Niseko Rules have been made out of necessity after experiencing many accidents. If you are using the resort’s chairlifts, you must abide by the Rules. Niseko respects the freedom to ski out of bounds, but the rules must be honoured to keep it that way. The groomers condition is epic today. After a day of snowfall—and it was pretty wet, dense snow—and a brief period early in the morning with some pretty strong winds, we're back to blue skies, sun and a breeze coing in from the southwest today. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . After that snow yesterday we have been enjoying some blue skies this morning. Conditions should be almost peak season-like this morning which is a great thing to be saying in the middle of March. It's feels quite windy, but not enough to stop lifts. The wind is strong and almost certainly going to be affecting at least some ropeways/ski lifts. It's still early so don't know if this fog will be hanging around. The trees in front of my place looks like snow monsters in the beginning stages of development. Snow depth numbers still rising.
