  • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 14th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this seas 398cm Posted on Wednesday 14th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It got more overcast since the report yesterday morning and we ended up having some rain. Still, we are back to snow this morning with over 5cm so far and counting. Currently it is slightly over 0C in town. Hopefully we might get a day of fresh snow today. Wind is a problem for Kagura again. Both Ropeway bases are open but some lifts and runs are unavailable. (Kagura up to Number 1 pair, Tashiro up to Number 6 pair). As a follow up to my comments yesterday, regarding snow levels: while ski areas are all open, there are indeed still some runs/sections that have not yet opened due to there not being enough snow yet. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is a good example. That area often only opens in January, but we'd hope for it to be available by now. Over at Joetsu Kokusai ski area (and nothing to do with snowfall), it is worth mentioning that the Atema and Osawa car park bases (and associated runs) are only open on weekends this season. In the case of Atema, that is a chance for this season. That information has been added to the list below. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 140cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 80cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 130cm Notes: Both Ropeway bases (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are open, along with the Dragondola connection with Naeba ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 105cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 180cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 130cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 150cm Base: 110cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 120cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 160cm Base: 80cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 90cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 90cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Wednesday 14th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 398cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 19 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 58cm (on 12th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 242cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I have to be early this morning. 14cm of snow since the report yesterday and not much more than a dusting since yesterday evening. Today we start the morning with a mostly cloud, but we might get some sunshine in the morning. It is going to be a rather mild day, perhaps getting close to 10C in town. It's about -2C just before 7am. Tomorrow might be a borderline rain/snow kind of situation as it remains relatively mild. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 412cm Posted on Friday 16th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday the clouds quickly parted and the sun came out. Fine weather, particularly in the first part of the morning. It was a mild day, with an eventual high of just over 6C in town. I was woken up at 5am this morning by the sound of heavy rain. Let's hope that, weather-wise, at least the rain holds off as much as possible and it isn't too windy. Forecasts vary: the rain drying up sometime during this morning, or it raining on and off through the day. (I can't see any sign of fresh dustings on higher webcams). Tomorrow should start with some sunshine which might turn to rain later on and then snow overnight. I'd like to characterize the current moment as a short peak-season blip; that is not unknown, of course. Forecasts do look promising for some potentially heavy snow from Tuesday onwards next week. (Possibly for multiple days too - that would be just what we need/want). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is quickly turning into a lovely sunny morning and thankfully the rain of yesterday is a memory. Without a fresh layer, we'll have to see how snow conditions has survived the experience! We can probably expect some icy hard conditions before it gets warmer. It will be mild today, might be getting up to around 10C in town. There might be some fresh before tomorrow morning, but we are warned of the chance of rain at first (later on this afternoon). Much more promising is the prospect of some good snowfall incoming soon. Starting around Tuesday? Forecasts currently show it as 2-3 days of snow... it would be very welcome. By the way, check out the 'sea of clouds' over the Minamiuonuma valley early on (below, looking north from the top of Ishiuchi). Just in: I'm hearing about a problem with the gondola at GALA Yuzawa --- they are unsure when that will be fixed; check before going. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 160cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 130cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 65cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 150cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 190cm Base: 140cm Notes: Both Ropeway bases (Mitsumata and Tashiro) are open, along with the Dragondola connection with Naeba ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 100cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 170cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 120cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 150cm Base: 110cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 100cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 160cm Base: 80cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 80cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 90cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 17th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 412cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 20 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 58cm (on 12th January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 256cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 18th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this seas 413cm Posted on Sunday 18th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday started off with some fine weather, that low sea of cloud over Minamiuonuma, and a bit of drama over at GALA Yuzawa. There was some mechanical problem with the gondola at that ski area and while it did eventually open at 10:15am, by then some people had been shipped off to alternative ski areas. I don't know what the problem was, but it was good to see that it only lasted a relatively short while. GALA Yuzawa is one of the newest ski areas in the region, but is itself celebrating 35 years this season. It is a reminder that there are a lot of ski lifts across the region - and indeed Japan - that are at least that old... So, yesterday we had some fine weather in the morning, though from what I hear from various locations the snow was rather icy and challenging to the knees in the morning only softening up later on as it warmed up. I was at Maiko and that is what I experienced. From around lunchtime clouds quickly gathered and then it rained. We were told that there might be some fresh snow overnight. It is trying to snow at the moment but of the wet variety and a bit of a weak showing. There's a dusting on the top of my car; I can just about justify the 1cm added to this report. No specific news from ski areas this morning about how many cm there might have been on the mountains. Not much, though. Webcams from ski areas show poor visibility higher up at the start of the day. Hmmmm. It's not a particularly genki sounding report this morning, is it. Sorry! Looking ahead to the coming week in the hope of improvement, temps are set to drop on Tuesday and what looks like good snowfall across several days. Please may it be so. Here's hoping for a lot of snow over the coming week. We need it. As we wait for what comes, I thought I'd share this. Yesterday the snow piled up in my garden was at the highest point 70cm. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good news for snow lovers. It has been snowing and looks set to continue. Some curious snowfall measurements this morning, even at our 2 main measuring points that are close to each other. At one there's just 23cm. The other - the main one that we go with - has had 35cm since yesterday morning. Anyway a decent amount and a good first step to the total refresh that this week promised to provide. Yuzawa Kogen is reporting 20cm since yesterday evening. We need lots, so let's have much more! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Excellent news this morning, everyone. With 16cm of snow on the top of the car yesterday evening (wiped off), there's another 42cm there this morning. So that is 58cm since yesterday morning, with what looks like much more to come across the coming days. (There's actually even more than a bit to the north at SJHQ in Minamiuonuma. Sounds like areas a bit further north/north-west are really getting pounded!) Another few days of this and our situation will have been transformed, in a very good way. Keep going, please! The snow depth numbers below are largely not updated this morning. I would expect the snow depth numbers to increase quite a bit imminently, but it's worth pointing out that sometimes there's a bit of a delay in these things. They are kind of not important. What is important is... it's snowing! (Looks like the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed today). • Yuzawa Now: Friday 23rd January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this seas 523cm Posted on Friday 23rd January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning. Curious weather the last day or so. We have received more snow in Yuzawa, but less than we expected and actually much less than just to the north in Minamiounuma and Uonuma... and Nagaoka. (Hey, those guys don't need snow, bring it down here!) In SJHQ garden, just outside of Yuzawa and north of Ishiuchi, there has been over 45cm of snow since yesterday morning! In contrast, at our measuring point in Yuzawa (and the number on this report), it's been less than 15cm. It's not often that there is such a big difference; the numbers are usually similar. Still, all snow is, of course, always welcome. From ski areas, Kagura ski area is reporting about 30cm of fresh and Yuzawa Kogen is reporting 20cm. It looks like the top lift at Iwappara will not be opening this morning due to the worry about avalanche. They are probably more sensitive about that than usual due to what happened there last year. Other lifts opening as normal over there. It has still been snowing early morning but has eased off now in Yuzawa while it is still snowing to the north. In Yuzawa there is even some limited blue sky to see in places as I post this report but that might well be temporary. There is still more snow on the way today and over the next few days. Possibly heavy snow at times over the weekend. Like I said, rather curious. --------------------------------- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 200cm Notes: The Central Area and Northern Area (including the downhill course and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama) are open The Southern Area and Ropeway connection with Yuzawa Kogen are not yet open ----------------------- Ishiuchi Maruyama Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 185cm Notes: The top connection with the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa is now open Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th February and then Fridays and Saturdays until 28th March (until 8:00pm) ----------------------- Iwappara Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 115cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 28th March (until 7:00pm on weekdays and Sundays, until 8:00pm on Saturdays and nights before holidays) ----------------------- Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth (reported by ski area): 170icm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 22nd March (until 9:00pm) The Atema and Osawa base car parks (and associated runs) are scheduled to be open on weekends only ----------------------- Kagura Official snow depth: Top: 220cm Base: 170cm Notes: Both Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeway bases are open ---------------------------- Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 150cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Fridays, Saturdays and nights before holidays until 28th March (until 2:00am the next morning) ---------------------------- Maiko Snow Resort Official snow depth: 170cm Notes: Floodlit night skiing on Saturdays and Sundays until 14th March (until 8:00pm on Saturdays and 7:00pm on Sundays) ---------------------------- Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: Top: 250cm Base: 120cm ---------------------------- Naeba Official snow depth: Top: 180cm Base: 150cm Notes: Daily floodlit night skiing until 21st March (until 8:30pm) ---------------------------- NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 170cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: Top: 170cm Base: 70cm Notes: The upper Kogen area and base area are both open The Ropeway connection with the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not yet open ---------------------------- Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort Official snow depth: 100cm ---------------------------- Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 140cm Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Friday 23rd January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 523cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 25 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 58cm (on 12th and 22nd January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 367cm reported on 15 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 24th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 525cm Posted on Saturday 24th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It's difficult to make wider-picture comments at the moment, as forecasts and the reality are often differing. It feels up and down - periods of some nice heavy snow and then the next day expectations not being met. Niigata Prefecture did get more snow yesterday. But it was (again) mostly to the north of us here in Yuzawa. We even got some sun at times here, and hardly any snow beyond my report yesterday morning. We start this morning with some clearer sky amongst cloud, though are once again promised snow both during the day today and tomorrow. Whether we actually get that or not, we're just going to have to wait and see. Having said all that, it is important to note that we are definitely in a better place (re: amount of snow) than we were 5 days ago. And that is very good. So far this season, the heavy snow, when it does come, doesn't seem inclined to keep on going for that long. As I have pointed out before in these reports, having a good amount of snow becomes much more important later in the season. Less snow means a shorter season. So, come on, let's have some more. Ski areas should all be open as planned this morning. It is a cold early morning; it should remain cold and so conditions should be a lot of fun. Perhaps it is best I stop thinking about it all and get out there and enjoy it. There's going to be a firework display over at the base of GALA Yuzawa at the end of operations today. (I know I sometimes go on about heavy snow, but it's just so exciting when it happens. Just ignore me!) ;) Yuzawa Now 2025-2026 season Data as of Saturday 24th January 2026 Total snowfall at base so far 525cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 26 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 58cm (on 12th and 22nd January) November 2025 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2025 snowfall 144cm reported on 9 days January 2026 snowfall 369cm reported on 16 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 25th January 2026

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 68cm Snowfall at base this seas 593cm Posted on Sunday 25th January 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well, after the somewhat disappointed tone of yesterday, it's all change again this morning. This is more like it! Post report yesterday, we actually had a period of clear blue skies and sunshine - beautiful - but it changed really quickly and by 9:30am it was snowing. And it has been snowing pretty much since then sometimes heavily. Total snowfall at our measuring point, after two clearings, has been 68cm [updated after re-check] up to 8:30am this morning. Love it! Actually, areas to the north have - again - got even more than that. Areas around Tokamachi continue to get pounded with huge amounts of snow. Naeba to the south has received less. Yuzawa Kogen ski area is reporting 50cm of fresh since yesterday evening and a possible delay to opening as they cope with it. It's one of those mornings when I really wish other ski areas published snowfall numbers. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed this morning due to wind, with only the Mitsumata Area up to the gondola open at that ski area. It seems that there has been some kind of problem with the Chuo quad lift at Iwappara since yesterday. Ski areas dealing with a lot of snow this morning, but it's great to see the snow walls getting bigger and more 'normal'. The snow is expected to continue into early tomorrow morning and forecasts look good for some regular snow over the coming week with a few periods of clearer skies (particularly Tuesday?).
