Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano

New snowfall at base 34cm
Snowfall at base this season 398cm

Posted on Friday 8th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here.

Good morning from Nozawa.

Is it just me, or we didn't get either as much snow or strong winds as we were told might happen overnight?

Still, there's a very good 40cm or so being reported from Hikage up to Yamabiko, with almost all of that coming overnight. So that is nothing to complain about and a very nice new layer out there.

Light snow for the moment and doesn't feel particularly windy either.

How the 'state of emergency' that has been announced for Tokyo and surrounding prefectures for the next month affects Nozawa and other ski areas remains to be seen. Hopefully the worst of it will be that less people will be able to get themselves here. Which obviously is not good in itself for the ski area and the village... we shall see.

Whatever your circumstance and wherever you are, I say let's stick to the rules and advice and do what we can to get through all this as quickly as possible.

Fresh snowfall recorded by the resort (since yesterday morning):

- Yamabiko (1407m): 41cm

- Uenotaira (1230m): 33cm

- Hikage (660m): 44cm

- Nagasaka (615m): 32cm

- Karasawa (563m): 20cm
