Lots of snow this morning; your correspondent had some work to do last night, so couldn’t start the plowing fun from 5am as usual... so I wasn’t done until a bit ago.
But late might be good as once again conditions are changing. The wind is getting stronger, and also coming from all over, first blowing from the east, then the west, then going calm again. The snow has resumed, though, although we’re also getting blasts of graupel—soft hail pellets—that bounce off everything. When we get graupel, we might get lightning and thunder, which often means heavy snow. It's going to keep on coming, in short.
I have to thank our man on the ground in the Lotte Arai area, JH-san, for alerting me after the fact that the upper lifts weren’t running yesterday, after I just reported the numbers and kept on going. In fact, Sugunohara’s top No. 3 lift was also closed yesterday. He also let me know that the top Zendana lift at Lotte is not running, and that the gondola will at least be delayed, which is what the website is now saying.
This is really dense snow, but as heavy as it is, if you step on it you go way down, so conditions are not very safe wherever you go into fresh snow.
Some people who went into the backcountry also reported that it was slow coming down the mountain, too. Lots of powder, but sloooow downward motion.
As I write a blast of wind has made everything white outside, so things will remain uncertain for some lifts (and cold if you’re out there!)
