Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 1cm
Snowfall at base this season 1408cm

Posted on Saturday 22nd February 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Glad I’m reporting a little late today (another day not getting up super early to plow; busy start to the day anyway; other good excuses), because the snow has started to come down, just as the morning TV reports were saying.

Looks like we could get a pretty good fall; the TV weather reports were talking in terms of 50cm+. We’re ready!

Kind of.... seems like we get things under control around buildings and along the street just in time for the next dump and another round of snow throwing. It’s about this time that the locals start thinking about those green days of summer that seem almost impossible with all the snow on the ground. Actually, it’s pretty schizophrenic for everyone here: the forests up the mountains are so green and deep and even jungle-y in summer that we can hardly remember the snow walls and cold (and plowing); in winter, you can’t imagine green trees and the ability to see things horizontally, not obstructed by four-meter walls of snow.

I think that’s why we sometimes get skeptical about outside ideas of massive development, because, like many who bought properties here (especially during the last two low snow years), they will be overwhelmed by this much snow, and the simple reality of having to deal with it just to get out and do the normal things of life. Even as I’m writing the snowfall has really picked up, so visibility is almost as bad as a dense fog.

But it’s still amazing, unlike anything else people are going to experience.

We only had a dusting of snow this morning, so that's all I'll report now, and give a total tomorrow.
