Can anyone explain this weird image?

Bloody persistent arncha when you get this sort of thing into your head.

It says "Hot springs" and "Monkey on a stick" (the big kanji on the left says 'kushi' which is skewered meat). Why? Who knows. Like scouser says...

Cheers O11!

Yip I'm terribly persistent - just ask my wife \:D There are so many mysteries in Japan... If only I had the patience to learn the language... But its a bit tricky when you only spend a few occasional weeks there... Thanks for the explanation \:\)

It looks like they're making kushikatsu (kushi-skewer, katsu-cutlet). Its a range of breaded meat, seafood, and veggie skewers deep fried in lard and served with a range of flavorings such as Japanese sweet sauce, flavoured salt, ketchup, and ponzu (soy+citrus+vinegar). If you go to a good kushikatsu-ya, the cooks are quite inventive with what they use (no mars bars though). Its a lot nicer than the above description may sound.

There's also kushiyaki, which is similar skewered ingredients, cooked on a grill. The best known variety is of course yakitori.

I dunno if its connected, but there's probably lots of monkeys around Nozawa.
