The only problem we had with language was a taxi driver who drove us to Kutchan to the big shopping centre.

 

Other than that Madarin and Australian are the main languages there

I've also got a Japanese app on my phone which does not use data when roaming....it says the phrases out loud if you cant get your mouth around some of them. The "a large bottle of beer please" is a useful one!!

I find that the phrase 'Good day, mate' goes down well with Australians and is popular Nisekogo.

Oh, and 'barbie'.

Not meaning the doll, but a barbecue.

Also, banter about Crocodile Dundee and also that Steve Irwin Crocodile Hunter fellow always goes down a treat.

A 'JR hat' with corks dangling down around the sides, whilst looking silly, always makes for a good prop to have hand to help you fit in.

now I'm thinking of it like a finish this sentence sort of thing.

English in Japan is...

Honestly though it doesn't really seem to matter. It might save you a bit of frustration, but not being a dick is pretty universal.
