Japan is a cash country and while it is getting better, its not across the board. So Tokyo and big cities you'll prob be fine but countryside is another matter. I can't tell you for sure about Hakuba, one of the ppl living there could advise, but I'd be on the safe side and just bring cash. Even leave a little emergency funds in you Oz bank account and bring your atm card, if its cirrus or maestro then you can get money out from any Post Office machine and any 7-11 machine. Its safe here as well, so carrying large amounts of cash around is the norm for japanese people.

Seems to have panhead pete. Sign on it says you can use cirrus and maestro, and we successfully used maestro, so no reason why it wouldn't work this year.

Cash cards are a rip-off.
+ for cash or fee free cards.
