juliescotthansen 0
Hi! I am wondering if there are any good hiking possibilities in Niseko? Is there any point in bringing skins for my skis, or is there mostly bootpacking? And if I'm there for three weeks, skiing everyday, is it best to get a three week pass or a 50-hour pass (if I'm planning to do lots of backcountry skiing)? All help is appreciated! Go Native 70
Skins would be very handy. Bootpacking in snow up to your armpits is not fun at all. Not sure about the pass. If you'll not be using the lifts daily then I'd suspect the 50-hour.
Tubby Beaver 209
not knowing anything about it, but is there any situation where bootpacking in snow would be preferable to skinning?

Steep wind packed slopes can sometimes be easier to bootpack straight up than zig-zagging your way up on skins. Near the summit of Youtei I have thrown the skis on the pack and booted up the last 150m or so before. Generally though for most backcountry areas in Niseko you're much better off skinning or at least having snowshoes.
rsser 0
OTOH if it's icy above long falls crampons on boots is the way to go.
