i'm heading to hakkoda this weekend for some bc touring. i'm pretty stoked but since i've never been is there anything i should look (out) for? routes i should not miss (or avoid like the plague)?

any places to go at night? we're staying at Sukayu onsen.

(i'm too lazy to read ALL the journals, but from the few that i have read, i'll make sure not to forget my emergency blanket and bivy)

I beleive many Japanese buy following air packages when they

want to go to Hakkoda, Aomori-ken.

(1) JAL Tours

(2) JTB Sun & Sun

-->北東北-->八甲田

I suppose Jyogakura Hotel is rather good for western people. If you want to enjoy "traditional" Japanese onsen, Sukayu Onsen Ryokan is recommended. Hakkoda-Sanso is a cosy lodge (so-called Japanese Pension) just in front of the ski lift. If you are a solo traveler, a single bank bed of Jyogakura Hotel would be nice.

Usually, most Japanese skiers/snowboarders wanting BC powder skiing would buy guide service from Jyogaura Hote, Sukayu Onsen Ryokyo or Hakkoda Sanso in hard winter season. Self-guided BC tour is poplular in spring season (March end begin thru May end). The trail head for Mt. Ohtake is near to Sukayu Onsen Ryokan.

You see very few English signs, and local people mostly hesitate to speak English. I suppose you would have to have some Japenese speaking skill or to accompany with a Japanese friend when enjyoing Hakkoda ski resorts.

Hope for your helps,
