Garbage Island

Nowadays, regardless of how remote of an island you go to, you'll end-up with heaps of platic rubbish washing ashore. Long gone are those paradisiac islands of movies. People use rivers as sewers, rivers go to the ocean, and you end-up with this situation.

A friend of mine worked for the Hawaii Dept. of Land and Natural Resources and often went on wildlife study trips up to the uninhabited Northwestern Hawaiian islands (between Hawaii and Midway). On the atoll where "base camp" generally was, there was a beach on the fringing reef literally covered with rubber zori (flip-flops) that were from a container that washed off a ship going from Taiwan to Guam many decades ago. When there was nothing to do, the researchers would pass the time trying to make matching sets.

Japanese beaches are shite for garbage. Coming from WA, the amount of rubbish is shocking, and the communities' neglect worse.

Coming from Hawaii, Japanese beaches are terrible. Not only is there consumer litter, but also a lot of industrial refuse like bits of fishing equipment, rope, and stuff like that.
