Hoping that someone can offer some advice - I am new to Japan and planning a snowboarding trip for when some friends come out in Dec. At the moment I hear the season is not looking good - is this a normal start? We are only able to go from Dec 24 - Jan 1. The price of our package also costs 73 000 which I have been told is quite expensive. Not sure what do do at this stage, cancel, stick with it, change resorts? We are heading to Nisekko as I heard has the best powder in Japan?

It had better be good by then. I'm there for 3 weeks.

But all this whining about no snow (myself included) is just that Whining. Most ski seasons throughout the world (Northern Hemisphere) don't usually get started until mid december.

It is surprising how quickly the snow piles up as well once it starts falling of course.

Dec 24-Jan1 is the most high season and 73000 is expensive, but not that expensive. Airfair alone is about 50000 RT plus lodging (approx 6000/nite w/ two meals)if you schedule by yourself. Some tours are running about 55000 for 6 days.

BTW, snow is late compared to last season and yes it is late compared to normal, too. I had to cancel my Tateyama trip this weekend. First time in 5 years.

The prob is the high mountains usally have at least a 100cms of base. There is no base. PS people light snow years are the most dangerous of all. Last year Canada was a great example of a low snowpack doing stupid things.

by high mountains meaning tateyama or maybe even happo.

It's late compared to the thirty year average, but not compared to recent years (bar last year). There is nothing to indicate late december will be crap. In fact, three years ago I bypassed Hakuba dec 20th on my way to Hokkaido due to lack of snow. The next day it started to snow, and snow and snow. That winter was fantastic. That scenario has occured for three of the eight seasons i've had here.

If there's absolutely no base in three weeks, start to get a little worried. Until then, the only reason to get stressed is, if like me, you're not wanting to wait 'til christy...
