NAGANO — About 100 people were trapped inside gondolas as a ski lift in Nagano Prefecture came to a sudden stop Saturday morning, local police officials said. About 60 of the trapped people were rescued by 7 p.m., with one woman being taken to a hospital for not feeling well, the officials said. The rescue operation is taking time as it involves forcing the gondola door open and taking each passenger out by suspending them on a wire.

The ski lift at the "Ontake 2240" ski area in the village of Otaki came to a halt at around 10:30 a.m. Saturday when it was transporting skiers on 44 gondolas to the mountaintop, the officials said. According to the police and the operator, the 2,400-meter-long lift, located between altitudes of around 1,680 meters and 2,240 meters, transports skiers on gondolas with a seating capacity of six people each at a height of about 20 meters from the ground.

I think one of their gondolas crashed into a support pillar a few years ago during hiking season. An old couple got killed.

Maybe its ol' holy mountain's way of saying it doesn't want to be climbed. It'll bloody erupt next!
