Japan, like the rest of the world, will be frozen in time for one second for the New Year.

 

On Jan. 1, 2006, a leap second will be added to Japan Standard Time to counter the small discrepancy that has emerged between solar time and the time controlled by today's super-precise atomic clocks.

 

Japan will get its extra second just before 9 a.m. on Jan. 1, with official clocks going from 8:59:59 to 8:59:60 and then 9:00:00.
