Misorano Don't you mean NZ couldn't guarantee that? and for the that reason we lost out to Aus only in 2003. I did'nt really understand the reasons but you are right it was fu_k up of mega proportions by the sounds of it. I was the same as most on this thread I guess in that it was definitely a (welcomed)surprise to see it go to NZ. Kind of hard to believe Australia vetoed NZ bid as it would have certainly brought a lot to them in terms of tourism revenue with flights and the real possibility of having supporters having no option but to use accomodation in Sydney or Brisbane. There is a nihonjin guy at my work whos just livid about Japan losing it but another kiwi put in him in his place by saying that Japan should concentrate on scoring a try against the All Blacks in a world cup before submitting their intention to get involved in the bidding which has a fair bit of credibility imho. Also what Farquah mentioned about the top league players suggesting their was an element of infighting within the JRFU- who knows things like that can leak and interfere with the bidding processs but anyway its been decided and there is not much Japan can do about it now- They should move on and start getting ready preparing for their bid in 2015.
I guess this whole drama would make an excellent "free conversation" element of an English lesson. I had a lot of students who loved rugby and I can't help of thinking how they felt when the decision was announced. Maybe the NZRFU will get hate mail from some of the Japanese purists like the one described in a previous post! I was told this happened after the heayweight Judo finals at the Sydney Olympics- Where the Referee (a Kiwi!) made a difficult decision in favour of a French athlete and subsequently Shinohara (and Japan) had to settle with Silver! Still along way away though isn't it. 18 years since we last had it and another 5 from now- Hopefeully it will be a simple retention of the Webb Ellis trophy from France in 2007- Ganbatte NZ!

OUCH!!!! Low blow there.

That Judo call was a bit rough, I was watching it live and it sure seemed an ippon to me (no expert mind you). Thing is where you have human refs, you get human mistakes.

(Not a good time to be a Kiwi eh?)

My biggest problem with the bid (and I know many people will disagree), was that Ex PM Mori was in charge.

Here's a guy who came to power in a back room meeting of 4 guys after Obuchi had a stroke. Was prob the most unpopular PM in the last 20 years. He's is a total f_cker. I actually met him once and he's the type of guy who never looks you in the eye. He's checking out the room while shaking you hand (no eye contact, doesn't listen to a word you say).

I remember once when he was PM he met with Nakata the soccer player and was going on about Japan never beating Korea, and Nakata got stuck into him as they had beaten the Koreans a few times. He keep the cheesey grin on his face all the time. This is not the guy to unite a bid for the WC.

If they do bid again, I'd like to see it led by a guy like Hirao (he was involved this time, but under Mori). He is prob the only guy who is universally respected in Japanese rugby circle. Another good option would be Andrew McCormick.

I think NZ won the bid from a rugby angle, not so much a dollars and cents angle (I was suprised). What Japan needs is to really show how the game would improve if hosted in Japan, and not how much dosh could be made out of it.

They need to raise the public awareness that they are even bidding. I heard zip about it here in Japan.

I for one will be here. I'll take you to a game with Mr Me Jane if you are still here \:\)

Seems like you know whats going on in rugby japan very well Misorano. Sounds like a complete idiot this Mori guy. I can just imagine him grinning like a cheshire cat, barcode combover, sporting a set of milk bottle glasses!- Too true about raising awareness with the actual bid as well- I got a lot of blank looks, "honto nis" and other scooby doo like impressions when asking people what they thought about the matter. Its a bit unfortunate (for japan) the timing of the University final yesterday- There must have been 30000 fans there to see Waseda kick hell out of Keio- you'd think that number of people there for a Uni. game would add a bit of weight to their package- At the Japan vs Spain game recently however there was nothing like that kind of turnout- I wonder if the fact that gaijin players e.g Andrew McCormack are picked in Japan national sides adds a x against them in the bidding discussions- On another note looking forward to a (somewhat enevitable) Grand Slam v Scotland this w/e- Also got a feeling the Kiwis will get up against the Kangaroos in the league tri nations final- You can watch it on www.nrl.com

Was just reading on www.stuff.co.nz that Nicky watson is dating a NZ Warriors teen star- Guess it would add a bit of pressure once you get thrown (or throw yourself!)into the limelight like that. Did'nt seem to shake Lord Byron Kelleher though with his highly publicised "relationship" with the porn star Kaylani Lei! Cheers to all those who contributed to the thread. Maybe see you on the snow sometime this season!

Was at the Wasaeda game yesterday and had a chat with some of the other spectators there. Was interesting to find a range of reactions to the World Cup result, few people I spoke to weren`t surprised because of rugby`s lack of pulling power in Japan when i pointed out that there were currently 30,000 people plus in the stadium the reply was, it`s a university thing!!

Just as a token note will be playing against Australia for Japan in the Rugby League 7`s comp this coming Feb if any of you boys are interested in watching and a piss up.

Just watched some of the game on TV. Keio started off well enough, but must have fallen away.

I played for about 12 years over here, finally giving up last Nov, as the body couldn't take it anymore. Rugby teammates are always some of the best mates around no matter where you are.

Ha ha, Byron and Kaylani Lei. Had a mate over for dinner last night & he didn't know about that, luckily I had a clip on the computer to give him the full picture. Credit to Byron for not giving a toss about what people think.

Byron! what a guy! I can imagine his popularity among the lads went up pretty high in NZ.

 Quote:
Ron Jeremy, 52 - nicknamed the Hedgehog for his hairy back and squat physique - has bedded almost 5000 woman and was in Auckland last week for this months Erotica Expo.

"Kaylani Lei, she was phenomenal - she smoked it, she fogged the lens of the camera she was so good," said Jeremy.

"From what I remember she's hot as a pistol, a good performer who likes to please the men.

"Byron is a real lucky man." "Asians have a tendency to be loyal, even in the porn business." "If they get into an open relationship it's open, if they're in a closed relationship it's closed."

found this on the net....funny

This news just in. kelleher has asked Henry to only consider him as a lock in future. He's stated that he's tired of putting the bull in and would rather support the hooker from behind with two guys flanking him.

She said, however, that she prefers a full-bek with a game plan of crashing it up the centre.

Why do you have that impression?

They built far too many stadia that now lie unused, giving the taxpayer a huge bill for maintenance. They built them thanks to typical pork-barrel politics.

Only 30,000 more foreigners than usual visited Japan during the tournament. For a major event, that is nothing.

Efforts by young Japanese to enjoy the their team's success in a jovial but relatively harmless fashion were stifled by the police. If it's a matsuri, Japanese people can get as pissed as they like and whack the sh!t out of each other, jump off bridges, set fire to each other, jump on rolling logs, whatever. But celebrate a football match? Oh no! Abunai! Abunai! Please go home now! Almost no public places showed the games on big screens. Railway stations deliberately didn't show them. Sapporo basically closed down for the England-Argentina game. The economic effect there was negative. Hardly any of the games held during the day in Korea were broadcast live.

Of course, lots of people here were into it, and aside from the usual ticketing fiasco it passed without major incident, so in that sense it was a success. To me though, a high level of interest is an absolute given for that level of event. To that end, I don't think the Japanese did "a great job" of hosting it. In Korea, they had hundreds of thousands watching the games on screens in the middle of Seoul. All it takes is a bit of imagination.

With a rugby world cup, they would have to drum up a lot of interest in a sport with very low participation and complex rules. Japanese ladies don't really fancy rugby players like they do Beckham or Owen or Totti or Shunsuke with his basin cut. If Japan were to host it, they'd have to rely on more people coming in and would have to make it easier for them to come. And we all know how good they are at doing that.
