  1. Same same in learning almost every language, Mama. I haven't yet got to them in the Japanese dictionary, but I bet they are there! I'll find them when I need them - but at 60, I need other words much more!
  2. I was wondering who the heck Parker was, then GN started on about jackets, then the penny dropped ... we was talking about a parka!
  3. I have the Pimsleur CDs (first 60 lessons) and we are working through them one per weekend. They will be good so long as the other party - the local - realises their part of the script. If the locals depart from the expected conversation line, we will be well and truly stuffed! I also have the Heisig "Rembering the Kana" and "Remembering the Kanji" books and am working through them. If I can master these, I will be OK next January! (Says he, with total belief in his ability!) Still, what is a trip to Japan without resort to the "universal pointing language" and halting japanese/engli
  4. I avoid paractically all of them. There's enough to do without spending the whole of an evening watching some American production which pretends to be something else. My advice? Turn off the TV and get outside, dig the garden, grow some healthy food. OR go for a walk! Now that's a novel idea!
  5. That didn't make a whole lot of sense. Maybe it's the few glasses of red I've consumed, or maybe you are just not making sense. Why go to Niseko as well as somewhere else? With a limit to the budget (unless you've not got one) I go to a destination, ski there and do a couple of side trips as well. (This year, we stayed at Furano, but did a day trip to Kamui and a day excursion to the Asahidake Zoo. Both were very interesting!) My main reason for avoiding Niseko (after 2 trips there) is to get some authentic local culture and custom. I can get redneck yobs any day of the week, just ha
  6. From my experience just last January at Furano, the groomers are wide! but there's little scope for off groomed riding. We found the day trip to Kamui a great deal more fun in terms of getting into untracked pow. The groomers at Furano are a little over zealous, with the cut and levelled piste going from rope to rope on most areas.
  7. Mama, That's what we did. Booked the ski gear and clothes (all in one case each couple plus the skis) by Takkyubin from Narita airport. That left us with a small case and the carry-on to live out of while we tripped around. Ski gear was at the accom when we arrived. It would be helpful, though, if you could get the address of the accom in Kanji so the Takkyubin guy doesn't have to look it up. Same with the addy of Tokyo accom. We stayed in a small ryokan in Asakusa. Cab driver had to ring them to find out how to get there since the only address we had was in English. Woulda been b
  8. Ta mama, Sure to! We went with a couple of mates, had an absolute blast. Trying to get a TR together, but the forums and other stuff keep interrupting my plans! You know, stuff like work, sleep, eating, etc... all cunningly designed to take up time so I don't have enough left to fix the pics and do the TR. Feeble excuses, I know, but the best I can come up with on the spur of the moment. {;^)
  9. There is a qantas/jal code share flight that does the brivegas - cairns - tokyo route. That might be a move for you, unagi nigiri. Last month (was it only that long ago??) we flew Bris-tokyo qantas/jal. Overnighted Tokyo then ANA to shin chitose. Same deal return, but the tokyo-bris flight was an overnighter - leave 9pm arrive 7.30am (local). Made for an easy drive home. From chitose, we did a bit of train tripping around sapporo/otaru etc and then to Asahikawa and on to Furano. The coach trip Furano-Chitose was a bit of a bitch, 5 hours! still, we made it and cannot wait to get back
  10. Mama, Super shots and, as someone else said, good to see the cubs are having a good time. Last time I slid in Oz, we were picking aour way around dark patches in the cover (it was 'officially' 12cm!) and then a trip to Japow in 2005/6 when there was boundless snow! Not really a fair comparison, is it? Already booked accom for Jan 09, now on the lookout for cheap fares to get there. The web bookings aren't available more than 11 months out. 3 days to go, then they should be OK. Heading for Nozawa onsen this time after 2 trips to Hirafu and this year to Furano.

Main problem arises when a developer has used the "Front Page extensions" which is MS way of getting the page to do stuff that is not in the standard. FF then has a problem displaying the page because it does not render stuff that ain't in the standard. Bugger! Answer, as with most things in the FF domain, is t
  13. Started with an Exidy sorcerer, tape drive and 4K RAM. Have had computers at home since about '77. Taught Computing Studies at Higher School Cert (School leaving/Uni qualification exam) level for 14 years and now install WiFi networks and PCs, troubleshoot and repair PCs. Guess you could say I'm a geek (ish).
  14. Damn! I got a defective set of skis! The speedo is missing! I want a refund!

  16. Don't manage too much pool while at the snow, so cues are not an issue. OTOH, queues were a slight problem at opening tme at the gondola at Furano this January but not tto bad. Aus, up to 10 minutes normal at PB for the highspeed quad at opening, up to 5 mins for some of the drag lifts there. Best experiences, ski to the lift and straight on at almost every lift at Furano, Kamui and Niseko in January (except for Public holidays and weekends). Worst experiences in Japow, having half the Army and a gazillion school kids on "year end trips" to contend with on the lower lifts a
  17. Not driving in Japan, I'm back home already, but I am a control freak and prefer to determine the gear ratio in use for myself. No machine can do as good a job as a human, appropriately trained.

I want to spend time in Japan, not a Japanese version of Australia, albeit with a huge amount more snow.
  19. Again, from wiki ... In linguistics, a homonym is one of a group of words that share the same spelling and the same pronunciation but have different meanings. Some sources only require that homonyms share the same spelling or pronunciation (in addition to having different meanings), but these are the definitions most other sources give for homographs and homophones respectively. The state of being a homonym is called homonymy. Examples of homonyms are stalk (which can mean either part of a plant or to follow someone around), bear (animal) and bear (carry), left (opposite of right) and left (
  20. I cannot help but wonder why there is so much emphasis put on these pseudo elections. The fact of the matter is that the perspn with the deepest pockets in each party will win nomination. At that point there MAY be some validation of the poll, at the moment, however, it is a pointless question. Not the least of the pointlessness is the fact that, as a non-american, I have no voice. Not only that, but I haven't been following the debate with more than half an ear, as there is little I can do to change any of the outcomes. Quite why the world has to have an opinion on these elections,
  21. +1 would be likely to wallop me one if I did! She is also likely to react badly if a salesgirl called her that. It is, as said elsewhere, quite a condescending and insincere "fluff" word. Kinda like "dearie" or "darl", both of which give me the horrors.
  22. table - flat space for storing miscellaneous items and also a data construct dog - male of the canine species and an unattractive person and to worry another person by being always on their case. From Wiki ... Examples of homonyms are stalk (which can mean either part of a plant or to follow someone around), bear (animal) and bear (carry), left (opposite of right) and left (past tense of leave).
  23. Shhhh, don't tell everyone! Planning a trip there next season. Please let it stay relatively unspoiled at least until then.
