Japan ski and onsen
ausi ski bum replied to BlackpoolTower's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Must get up the courage to try one some time, it all seems a little strange to me. I worry about all the do's and don'ts. I have stayed in some amazing hotels with Onsen and never used them. -
Driving to Abashiri in Winter

Ezorisu The limited maps I have don't show Sounkyo very well but I see there is a frozen waterfall and ice area there thats all lit up, is this between Furano and Abashiri The ones I have found it on makes me think its do-able and cound be interesting. I have found a few excellent maps, in Japanese -
I met a Pom at Higashyama a few years back, I was walking to the car park at the prince and said G'day to this guy coming the other way, he just burst into laughter and said he was English and often wondered if Aussies just said G'day in the movies and he came to Japan to have Aussies all over the place saying G'day.

I get a frozen meal that I heat up but add fresh steamed vegetables so I still get plenty of good organic food. For some of us losing weight is a battle, I have struggled my whole life and when people meet me I get treat like I must be lazy and over eat,

Driving to Abashiri in Winter

Thanks thats excellent information, we are not into Onsens, the whole idea of bathing with a bunch of naked men is a bit to wierd for me ha ha but it does look relaxing so I may overcome my fears one day. I love the wild deer so that sounds grea. Its a bit of a trip but we have 19 days in Hokkaido so it will be well worth it. I have done enough driving in Hokkaido to know I wont cover the distances as fast as we do here, I think nothing of a 350km drive and return in a day. I have booked a Toyota Rav4 with English Speaking GPS and the Map Code system used in Japan makes it much -

So if I want to do a circuit from Furano to Abashiri with a stop over on the way and Abashiri to Tomamu also with a stop over but different route where would you recommend we go, looking for somewhere that may have a ski slope or some other attraction that is well worth stopping for, something most people overlook perhaps. -

I can rent through the Major companies and get a GPS but for less than half that cost I can hire a Mitsubishi Delicia in Higashiyama so its cheaper to buy a unit than hire a car with one in it. I found the Delicia Four Wheel Drive an excellent vehicle for driving around Hokkaido and the exta room in the back was great for getting changes and all our ski gear.

How easy is it to buy an english speaking GPS in Osaka that has all the roads in Hokkaido as well, last time I got one from the car hire place it looked like the one Nowa used in the Ark

What is driving from Rusutsu or Tomamu to Abashiri like in Feb March, how good are the roads and how long would this take, looks an interesting place to visit, maybe there is more to see on the way as well.

I'm Coming Back Again

I am doing my final planning now, + 1 likes to do trips to other winter tourist attractions, unfortunatly we miss many of them going when we do but I am keen to see the Frozen Waterfall they light up near Furano and any other activites people can recommend, we tend to ski one day tour one day etc. I have a basic plan now of 2 nights in Osaka when we arrive, 5 at Rusutsu, 5 Tomamu and 5 at Furano then 3 at Higashiyama (I have to return there because the rental vehicle is from there. Any must see non skiing side trips people can recommend. -
Niseko is fine, I have done two trips there now, last time I had a hire car and traveled to many of the other resorts, I did like the freedom this gave me, I personally like Rusutsu more than Niseko. Clothing wise I wear a thermal undersuit, Skivy and ski gear with a kneck warmer helmet and gogles, I find there are times when you need to cover totally and others where its way to warm for that. I actually had a kneck warmer made with a flap of the same material front and back I could tuck into my jacket front and back, it sealed out the cold totally and this was really important on powder

I have spent a few days at Rusutsu now and much prefer it to Niseko, the grooming there is far superior and the tree skiing excellent, Actually last time I was in Niseko in 2008 the grooming was terrible, I am stopping in at Niseko for a few days to pick up and drop off the hire car, I might pop into Moiawa, that can be a great ski. Stemik the Aussie season has just got started but there is snow on the ground and skiing happening which is always good in June, I am heading up next weekend and have two weeks booked in my apartment (Falls Creek) in August, I may reduce that by a week now t -
Gorden Ramsey is a foul mouthed pig!

If I was to treat my staff like he does I would have a harasment charge in a week, how does he get away with treating people like he does and why should we encourage such behaviour as acceptable. -
I have been there, Hire a car and head out to the Grand Canyon, consider Quad Bike Riding in the dessert, thats a lot of fun, deffinatly do the rides on the Stratosphere, there is nothing on earth comes close to how scary that is, so much so we did them all three times. Book your shows before you leave home and take a walk along the strip. Bad things, the guys slapping hookers business cards in your face the whole time and the time share guys offering free shows, they get really annoying to the point I felt like I was in a third world country.
