I have to weigh in for Hakkoda. Definitely off the beaten track. Not for wimps. This is a mountain that will tear you up and spit you out or take you for the ride of your life. The best part is that on most days you can find yourself all alone carving fresh tracks through deep new snow. Out of the way, but well worth the trip!

Aomori is home to possibly the cheapest resort in Japan for those who can get there. The Hakkoda Ropeway sells monthly tickets for about 11,500 yen and you can find accomodation at the base of the mountain or down the hill in Aomori city. Don't know what it is like for you guys who live down south, but us Northerners had a pretty good situation.
