  1. The keys to photographing a sequence are 1) a tripod and 2) a camera that can be set to take a certain number of pictures automatically at an interval.
  2. Size matters most when it means variation of terrain. I would easily trade a 20 lift resort that was just one long face for a 5 lift resort that was rolling steeps, cliffs, and trees.
  3. Wow where have I been? This thread totally took off without me. My input: It is good you have already decided on straps. That is the first key decision. There are definitely more quality boots for strap-ins. Gimmicks? Yeah they are out there, but when it comes to boot quality you really will get better boots if you spend more money. I recommend getting one of the top two models by a manufacturer. This is truer with boots than with any other component of your setup. One gimmicky sort of thing is the Vans cable tie. I thought it looked way lame and easy to break, but I hav
  4. Yeah dude, I say get that Custom. 15,000 is too sweet of a price to pass up. Especially with bindings! You'd spend that on 5 or 6 rentals. Plus if it doesn't suit you you should be able to sell it for that much.
  5. The term, "It's all about..." just means it's really cool. As in, "The buzz is all about..." Welcome to Squaresville, population 2. Just kiddin, I love you guys.
  6. Deebee - I would recommend something in the 156-158 range around 25cm wide. This may be a little big for your stats but that would be good for a beginner. Are you planning to buy before you even ride at all? I would really recommend trying out a few different boards to see what feels good. Shops over here let you demo boards for the day if you are a serious customer. It may be more difficult in Japan. What would be best is if you could hit up one of the demo days and ride different boards all day. Come to think of it though, you should probably get at least 10 days of riding in befo
  7. I guess I should have said I prefer a narrow board, not a thin board. I think a more narrow board provides sharper control. It tends to give a board more pop. It will also make for better carving and make the board lighter. Negatively, it makes the board less likely to float through powder and can make deep snow a challenge for the less experienced. A lot of these factors are also heavily influenced by the construction of the board (which I am far from an expert on). I definitely prefer a stiff board, but not other worldly stiff. Option makes very stiff boards. After ridin
  8. I've had some conspiracy theories on this for a while. Just how many SJGers masquerade as more than one person? We all know that 2pints,mate and BagOfCrisps are the same person. Cheeseman is a likely candidate...but whom? Any other ideas?
  9. I really didn't want to get too school play yard on the mac-addicts but I can end the debate with three word: Multiple Mouse Buttons 'nuff said
  10. I have never seen a chart but wouldn't be suprised if there was one. A certain part of it is personal preference too. I am 6 foot 165lbs (182cm, 75kg) and wear size 10 (US) boots. The last two years I have ridden a 157cm board that was 24.7cm wide. This year I am going a little bigger with a 161cm / 24.9 cm board. I have also ridden a 158 and a 159 in the past. I prefer thin boards.
  11. What kind of dairy products Ocean? Doc Mike, Are you saying that stretching is not proven to help prevent any injuries? What about pulled muscles? By not proven do you mean that maybe the right studies have not been done, or that studies have proven that stretching does not reduce the risk of injuries? Thanks
  12. It really depends more on your height and boot size. What are those (in the Queen's standard units if you please...stupid freakin American school system!)? Neither 65KG or 75KG seem very fat by my calculations...unless you meant 65/75KG over weight. For learning to snowboard a wider board may help you more than a longer board.
  13. From what I hear, if you are riding in Japan you don't have a choice. It sounds like almost every resort blasts music. If you don't like their music you have to listen to your own. As I said before, I only recently started listening to music while riding. It came about when I started getting a little bored of riding on long chair lifts by myself. There are good parts and bad parts. It can pump you up sometimes, but it can also be a hassle and tends to make you anti-social.
  14. I don't think they are trendy. I think it is just not uncool to wear one anymore.
  15. Speed is realtive to the application. When I think speed I think of 3D gaming performance. Polygon pushing. I promise the PC is a far superior gaming platform. I don't know what you are trying to say about the Mac being better because it doesn't have competition. I would think the competition in the PC industry promotes technological advancement.
  16. I mentioned this a while ago, but I can't really think of a time when I went down hard and thought, "whoa I could have broken my wrist!" Plenty of times have I said the same for elbow, shoulder, head, knee, leg, etc. I have also never known anyone that has injured their wrist (but I do know someone that broke a thumb). I am not disputing the validity of the injury, I just don't know if that will be the next protection I buy.
  17. Agreed. I have had days at Whistler with 10 inches of pow where it couldn't get any better. On the flip side, there have been days where it has been almost not worth riding.
  18. What is the deal with Apple people that have such a blind hatred for the PC as a platform? I cannot understand it at all. I am not anti-mac. I have used plenty of Macs. They have their purpose and their following, but I prefer the PC as an everyday computing platform. I have never heard PC people rip on Macs the way Mac people rip on PCs. It's like someone loving their Playstation so much that they hate the Xbox just because it's the competition. Whatever, they're all cool. Just wondering where this comes from.
  19. I agree. No need to censor a word here and there. We all know what is being said. I for one am certainly not offended by seeing a word like "wan.ky" in print. Granted I have never heard that particular word before, but that is true for any single word. Judging from the age thread, a vast majority of the people on this forum are adults. I don't think a stray expletive is going to offend anyone that much. I may be way off base with regard to public opinion, but that is my 2 cents anyway.
  20. Capacity. Solid state Mp3 players just don't hold enough data to make it a whole day on the slopes. The flash memory cards for the players that work with interchangable players are too damn expensive. The Hard Drive mp3 players are too fragile for boarding. And the mini-cd mp3 players are too bulky, prone to skipping, and rather fragile. My mini-disc player skipped a lot too, but not like a cd player. If it doesn't break it is the best because the MDs are cheap and easy to record to.
  21. You gotta try boots on. It is so important that they fit just right. I wear size 12 shoes but size 10 boots. The first year I boarded I had size 12 boots. It made such a difference when I got boots that fit correctly.
