Guess Where This Is
MagSeven replied to hellyer's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
It's not a local skijo for me, I'm further west. It's probably not local for anyone really, it's very remote! It's in the middle of the mountains north of Obihiro. I drove through it a couple of summers ago and thought it looked interesting. I'd like to check it out in the winter sometime, but it's such a mission to get to! -

Yes! You got it Gunma Boarder! Well done. And yeah, sadly not Granview. But on a side note - I'm planning a cycle trip in Honshu this summer, catching the ferry down to Niigata and including Fuji Rock at Naeba. I was looking at possible routes and saw we could go right past the famous Mt Granview. Pretty excited. -

Just go to any second hand store! You'll see some boards and skis from the last century (and possibly even the century before that!) -

Sorry, have been a bit slack with posting. Will try to get one up this afternoon. Lucky I wasn't going to post one of Tsugaike Kogen. -

Noooo to the hordes! I like the shabby charm of most ski hills in Hokkaido! -

Winter Olympics
MagSeven replied to seemore's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
I'm assuming there must be some kind of guideline as to how long and how steep an official downhill course is. There are some very steep courses in Hokkaido (ok, ok, not many!), and some very long ones, but I don't think I know many that are both. Maybe Furano might have something? Its really interesting to see the photos of the old downhill course on Eniwadake. And to look at the mountain now, you really wouldn't notice it at all. As to why they didn't leave it as a ski-jo? That area doesn't get a ton of snow, so it would probably be quite icy. Steep and icy, perfect for a downhill ra -

Only a small one at the hill in Kutchan. I wonder where they would find a course long and steep enough for a downhill in the Sapporo area, or anywhere in Hokkaido? Unless they tore down all the trees and rebuilt the lift on Eniwadake!? -

BD have been coming to Teine for a few years now. There's definitely been more foreigners up there this year though, especially last week with the Yuki Matsuri. The secret's out, but there are still plenty of spots that stay untouched. -
Heavy snow please. Now!

Had to brush about 20cm off the car this morning. Heading up to Asahikawa this weekend for Asahidake and Kamui Ski Links. With a bit of the Sounkyo Ice Festival thrown in this evening. -

I'll be up there from about 12:30 if you're still around then. Looks like a beaut! A good day to explore! -
hokkaido Hokkaido Touring 2013
MagSeven replied to agillgren's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Yeah, on a good day, Racey is awesome. Some nice lines if you keep your eyes open and very little competition for powder. These pics are from a little over a week ago And yeah, there is a really decent park there. It's not quite up to full size yet as there was a lack of snow early season, but can be definitely one of the best parks in Hokkaido. -

We were at Mount Racey yesterday! I've had some great days there so far this year. Yesterday was ok, a few stashes of powder in the trees, but it was mostly an on piste and park day for us. -
Is Kurodake closed?
MagSeven replied to klingsor's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
The ropeway and chair are open for the beginning of the winter, then close during jan for 'maintenance'. That's just mainly because they get so much snow, and the weather is generally too bleak for anyone to really want to be up there. They re open the ropeway first, and then the chairlift a little later for spring skiing. -
Late March... Niseko, or ?
MagSeven replied to Metabo Oyaji's topic in Snow talk, trip reports, Japan avalanche & backcountry
Probably won't bother with a car. Looking at simply a plain package tour, airplane to Shin Chitose plus bus to hotel, nothing beyond that. So, safe to cross Teine off the list for late March? Or worth keeping in the mix? But now that you mention it, how is Kiroro? Worth thinking about? This is Teine on March 24th last year. You still get decent days up there late in the season.
