Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 793cm Posted on Friday 21st March 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Up to 5-10cm of new snow being reported from the resorts this morning. (Just 2cm on my car). It may not be a huge number of course, but it will go some way to cover up the damage that was done yesterday with some heavy rain at times. We could really do with a lot more to cover that up of course, and there is some hope that today we will be getting somewhere towards that. It is snowing now and forecast to continue for the day. Colder as well than it has been as you might expect. Some windy conditions on the mountains as well today and because of those the Tashiro area of Kagura is closed for the day. Kagura is only open from the Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura Number 1 pair lift. GALA Yuzawa have said that the wind conditions may affect lifts later on but for the moment they are open as normal as are other resorts around town. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 21st March 2014, AM: Naeba: 240cm Kagura (Tashiro): 300cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 350cm NASPA Ski Garden: 235cm Gala Yuzawa: 340cm Iwappara: 190cm Yuzawa Kogen: 250cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 180cm Yuzawa Park: 190cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 250cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 240cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 21st March 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 793cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 62 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 156cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 828cm Posted on Saturday 22nd March 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was something of a wild day! Strong winds and snow, wet at first but bigger fluffier flakes later on, it felt like mid winter again. We even had a spell when the Kanetsu expressway was closed causing a bit of congestion but that was cleared up by the end of the day. It's difficult to put a number on how much snow there was because of the wind as well, but I had to move about 20cm off the top of the car in the evening and there's another 15-20cm this morning. So I make that 35-40cm. Resorts around town are saying up to 40cm of fresh snow as well. (Kagura are confusing me somewhat - they reported 20-30cm yesterday, and they are reporting 40cm 'until this morning'. So it's not clear whether that's a total of 60-70cm, or a total of 40cm. I'm guessing the former but on calling them the person on the line didn't know, and - guess what - the official snow depth number hasn't budged by a cm! Whatever the reality.... there's a lot of fresh snow up there). This is all of course excellent for mid-late March and it will have really patched over that icy stuff we had two days ago. The snow has stopped now, it's a chilly morning and there's more and more blue sky over the region. Should be a fine day for both snow and weather. People in the region today will be feeling very lucky with the timing. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday can't have been a particularly good day out there. First of all there was the rain and to add to that the poor visibility as that fog stuck around for what seemed like most of the day. Even down in town you couldn't see far, so I suspect it was worse higher up. I can see the mountains this morning and the sun is out. Kind of hazy rather than deep blue skies, but bright and sunny. Very warm conditions expected today and tomorrow with lots more sun; rain is forecast for Sunday. Might we be treated to some fresh snow up at higher elevations on Sunday? The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Very heavy rain yesterday evening and the rain along with some crazy sounding wind actually woke me up a few times overnight. No snow to show for it at all higher up (Kagura not reporting any snow anyway) and blustery winds are preventing most of Kagura from opening this morning -- just the Mitsumata area open. GALA Yuzawa is open as planned though this morning. The rain has stopped though and we actually have some blue sky opening up above the town now and as I write this the sun is shining through the window. Clouds are moving fast though, so that might not last long. Sunny conditions due tomorrow. No jokes about huge amounts of fresh powder, though there are definitely huge amounts of pollen flying around at the moment with a lot of people suffering from hayfever - including myself. Seems really bad this year. If you do suffer from the Japanaese brand of hayfever - be aware that it's full on here at the moment. Anyway enough about that, it's a fine and sunny morning in Yuzawa. Yes, we have had a sprinkling of snow down here in town overnight with Kagura reporting up to 10cm and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 5-10cm on the slopes. So there's a fairly thin layer on top of the spring conditions this morning for those getting out early. As I write this report, sun is shining through the clouds and it is snowing lightly. The sun bit is new over the last 10 minutes or so, and it feels like conditions might be about to clear up. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It almost felt like mid winter again yesterday at times. It was cold and we had some impressively heavy snow falling from time to time in the afternoon... but it was rather wet and didn't stick much, not around town anyway though I would expect something on the slopes - and I see that Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. I would imagine there's more than that though the way it was falling even down in town... After that cold weekend snap, we are going to be back to warming up and getting very spring like now. The next few days should be sun, sun, sun and double digit temperatures. There's a few clouds hanging around this morning but mostly clear and sunny. I was indoors all yesterday (avoiding hayfever) and can't say from experience but apparently it was fairly warm in the morning before really getting colder quite quick in the second part of the day... had the heater on last night. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out again this morning and clear skies all round. Not quite as blue as yesterday, a lighter shade. But it's already warming up and later on this afternoon we can expect temps to rise to 20 degrees and perhaps even a little higher. And almost exactly the same is forecast for tomorrow as well. So come prepared with sunscreen, shades or even something to cover your face up with... there's been some burn out there. Around Tuesday, maybe a little earlier, rain is expected. Until then, sunny skies and it should be a fine weekend. --- Current planned resort operations: 26th-29th April and 3rd-6th May only: Naeba Daily until 6th May: GALA Yuzawa (Central and North Areas) Kagura (Tashiro area) Daily until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 23rd April 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 240cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 290cm Gala Yuzawa: 180cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 25th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 30th April 2014
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Wednesday 30th April 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So, the last day of April. And back to a mid Golden Week weekday - meaning it's not a national holiday today. Something of a wind blowing about yesterday and overnight, with a few spots of rain later in the evening. This morning it's bright but cloudy, and some light rain falling again. Forecast is for cloud and sometimes light rain for today and probably through tomorrow as well. Unfortunately, wind again this morning is preventing GALA Yuzawa from opening today - it will be closed for the day. That means that the only place open today is Kagura (at the time of writing they seem to be opening as planned - may be good idea to check with them if you plan on being there). The good news is that it should be clear and fine weather conditions for the 4 day long weekend coming up (Saturday to Tuesday). --- Current planned resort operations: 3rd-6th May only: Naeba (Takenokodaira and Daishamen slopes - may change depending on snow conditions) Daily until 6th May: GALA Yuzawa (Central and part of North Area) Kagura (Tashiro area) Daily until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 30th April 2014, AM: Naeba: 90cm Kagura (Tashiro): 240cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 290cm Gala Yuzawa: 130cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Wednesday 30th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. - Yuzawa Now: Monday 5th May 2014
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Monday 5th May 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Cloudy at the moment, but there's a bit of sun shining through my window as I write this as well. Still, the forecast for the day is cloud and rain showers. For tomorrow, we should have more sun and no rain but perhaps still cloud. Tomorrow is of course the last day of the season for GALA Yuzawa and Naeba, as well as the Tashiro Ropeway (and Tashiro area) of the Kagura resort. Unfortunately, GALA Yuzawa is not opening today due to the quite strong winds forecast up there. Hopefully they will be able to open tomorrow. Impressively, the whole of Kagura will officially remain open until tomorrow, according to the resort. Not bad going - especially considering the various ups and downs of the season in terms of weather and snow. It goes to show that Kagura is less affected by those than resorts nearer town... Daishamen course at Naeba remains open, but the snow is getting thin on the ground and course narrow in places. --- Current planned resort operations: Until tomorrow: GALA Yuzawa (Most of Central and part of North Area) Kagura (Tashiro area) Naeba (Takenokodaira and Daishamen slopes - this may change depending on snow conditions) Until 25th May: Kagura (the main Kagura area via Mitsumata) All other resorts in the region are closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 5th May 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 210cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 90cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 5th May 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day May 2014 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
