No jokes about huge amounts of fresh powder, though there are definitely huge amounts of pollen flying around at the moment with a lot of people suffering from hayfever - including myself. Seems really bad this year. If you do suffer from the Japanaese brand of hayfever - be aware that it's full on here at the moment. Anyway enough about that, it's a fine and sunny morning in Yuzawa. A light northerly wind, and about 6 degrees now; high of 12 degrees expected in town. Similar conditions are forecast for tomorrow as well. Today is the last day for the Yuzawa Park skijo area. --- Here's the latest on when Yuzawa skijo intend to be open until: Until 1st April: Yuzawa Park Until 6th April: Yuzawa Nakazato Nakazato Snow Wood Iwappara NASPA Ski Garden Ipponsugi Until 6th May: Naeba (weekends only from 7th April) GALA Yuzawa Kagura (Tashiro) Until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata) --- Here's the latest on when Minamiuonuma skijo intend to be open until: Until 6th April: Ishiuchi Maruyama Maiko Snow Resort - but open again on 12th/13th April Joetsu Kokusai --- Already closed: Chateux Shiozawa Ishiuchi Hanaoka Itsukamachi Ludens Yuzawa Mt Granview Muikamachi Hakkai-san Muikamachi Ski Resort Yuzawa Kogen --- Official resort snow depths @ Tuesday 1st April 2014, AM: Naeba: 160cm Kagura (Tashiro): 300cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 350cm NASPA Ski Garden: 19cm Gala Yuzawa: 310cm Iwappara: 130cm Yuzawa Kogen: 200cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 120cm Yuzawa Park: 155cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 200cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 200cm Joetsu Kokusai: 160cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Tuesday 1st April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 828cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 63 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Saturday 5th April 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots of rain yesterday and strong winds at times. How about that snow? Yes, we have had a sprinkling of snow down here in town overnight with Kagura reporting up to 10cm and Maiko Snow Resort reporting 5-10cm on the slopes. So there's a fairly thin layer on top of the spring conditions this morning for those getting out early. As I write this report, sun is shining through the clouds and it is snowing lightly. The sun bit is new over the last 10 minutes or so, and it feels like conditions might be about to clear up. Weather is forecast to be unsettled today and tomorrow, so we might get a bit more snowfall through tomorrow. From Monday onwards, spring warmth is due to return along with sunny conditions. It's the last weekend for a bunch of skijo in the region as noted below. --- Planned resort closing dates in the region: Until 6th April: Ipponsugi Ishiuchi Maruyama Iwappara Joetsu Kokusai Maiko Snow Resort - but open again on 12th/13th April Nakazato Snow Wood Yuzawa Nakazato NASPA Ski Garden Until 6th May: Naeba (weekends only from 7th April) GALA Yuzawa Kagura (Tashiro) Until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata) --- These resorts are already closed: Chateux Shiozawa Ishiuchi Hanaoka Itsukamachi Ludens Yuzawa Mt Granview Muikamachi Hakkai-san Muikamachi Ski Resort Yuzawa Kogen Yuzawa Park --- Official resort snow depths @ Saturday 5th April 2014, AM: Naeba: 150cm Kagura (Tashiro): 300cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 350cm NASPA Ski Garden: 160cm Gala Yuzawa: 260cm Iwappara: 100cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 110cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 180cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 160cm Joetsu Kokusai: 150cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Saturday 5th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Monday 7th April 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It almost felt like mid winter again yesterday at times. It was cold and we had some impressively heavy snow falling from time to time in the afternoon... but it was rather wet and didn't stick much, not around town anyway though I would expect something on the slopes - and I see that Kagura is reporting 10cm of fresh snow since yesterday. I would imagine there's more than that though the way it was falling even down in town... After that cold weekend snap, we are going to be back to warming up and getting very spring like now. The next few days should be sun, sun, sun and double digit temperatures. There's a few clouds hanging around this morning but mostly clear and sunny. So now we are just left with Kagura and GALA Yuzawa open every day, along with Naeba doing weekends and Golden Week and Maiko Snow Resort just doing a last weekend on Saturday and Sunday. --- Current planned resort operations: Just next weekend (12th, 13th) only: Maiko Snow Resort Until 6th May: Naeba (weekends only from 7th April and then Golden Week) GALA Yuzawa Kagura (Tashiro) Until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 7th April 2014, AM: Naeba: 150cm Kagura (Tashiro): 300cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 350cm Gala Yuzawa: 270cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 7th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I was indoors all yesterday (avoiding hayfever) and can't say from experience but apparently it was fairly warm in the morning before really getting colder quite quick in the second part of the day... had the heater on last night. Oh yes and it did rain unfortunately. No reports that I can see of any snow at Kagura... This morning the sun is back and it should be with us for a run of at least a few days now. Clear and mild/warm conditions forecast for the weekend. This weekend is the last two days of the season for Maiko Snow Resort in Minamiuonuma which re-opens after being closed Monday to today. They plan to have all of the Gondola side of the resort open (the Maiko area will not be opening). Naeba will also be re-opening for the weekend as well - details are not clear but it looks like the Prince No2 Gondola, Number 5 quad and Takenokodaira pair lift will be operating. --- Current planned resort operations: 12th and 13th April only: Maiko Snow Resort Weekends only; then 26th-29th April and 3rd-6th May: Naeba Daily until 6th May: GALA Yuzawa (Central and North Areas) Kagura (Tashiro area) Daily ntil 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 9th April 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm Gala Yuzawa: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 11th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We actually have something different this morning. Well yesterday was hazier than it has been but still sunny. This morning I can't see the mountains - is that fog? Whatever it is, it's raining as well early on this morning - even up at GALA Yuzawa and Kagura according to the resorts. It is forecast to clear up fairly quickly though and by lunchtime it should just be cloudy. Not as high temperatures expected today, but maybe up to around 14 degrees. Tomorrow Naeba will be part open again for the weekend and of course GALA Yuzawa (North and Central areas) and all the Kagura areas will be open. Cloud/sun is the forecast for tomorrow as it stands now. --- Current planned resort operations: Weekends only; then 26th-29th April and 3rd-6th May: Naeba Daily until 6th May: GALA Yuzawa (Central and North Areas) Kagura (Tashiro area) Daily until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 18th April 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm Gala Yuzawa: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 18th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun is out again this morning and clear skies all round. Not quite as blue as yesterday, a lighter shade. But it's already warming up and later on this afternoon we can expect temps to rise to 20 degrees and perhaps even a little higher. And almost exactly the same is forecast for tomorrow as well. So come prepared with sunscreen, shades or even something to cover your face up with... there's been some burn out there. Around Tuesday, maybe a little earlier, rain is expected. Until then, sunny skies and it should be a fine weekend. --- Current planned resort operations: 26th-29th April and 3rd-6th May only: Naeba Daily until 6th May: GALA Yuzawa (Central and North Areas) Kagura (Tashiro area) Daily until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 23rd April 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 240cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 290cm Gala Yuzawa: 180cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 25th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Wednesday 30th April 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So, the last day of April. And back to a mid Golden Week weekday - meaning it's not a national holiday today. Something of a wind blowing about yesterday and overnight, with a few spots of rain later in the evening. This morning it's bright but cloudy, and some light rain falling again. Forecast is for cloud and sometimes light rain for today and probably through tomorrow as well. Unfortunately, wind again this morning is preventing GALA Yuzawa from opening today - it will be closed for the day. That means that the only place open today is Kagura (at the time of writing they seem to be opening as planned - may be good idea to check with them if you plan on being there). The good news is that it should be clear and fine weather conditions for the 4 day long weekend coming up (Saturday to Tuesday). --- Current planned resort operations: 3rd-6th May only: Naeba (Takenokodaira and Daishamen slopes - may change depending on snow conditions) Daily until 6th May: GALA Yuzawa (Central and part of North Area) Kagura (Tashiro area) Daily until 25th May: Kagura (Mitsumata and main Kagura area) All other resorts in the region are now closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Wednesday 30th April 2014, AM: Naeba: 90cm Kagura (Tashiro): 240cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 290cm Gala Yuzawa: 130cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Wednesday 30th April 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Cloudy at the moment, but there's a bit of sun shining through my window as I write this as well. Still, the forecast for the day is cloud and rain showers. For tomorrow, we should have more sun and no rain but perhaps still cloud. Tomorrow is of course the last day of the season for GALA Yuzawa and Naeba, as well as the Tashiro Ropeway (and Tashiro area) of the Kagura resort. Unfortunately, GALA Yuzawa is not opening today due to the quite strong winds forecast up there. Hopefully they will be able to open tomorrow. Impressively, the whole of Kagura will officially remain open until tomorrow, according to the resort. Not bad going - especially considering the various ups and downs of the season in terms of weather and snow. It goes to show that Kagura is less affected by those than resorts nearer town... Daishamen course at Naeba remains open, but the snow is getting thin on the ground and course narrow in places. --- Current planned resort operations: Until tomorrow: GALA Yuzawa (Most of Central and part of North Area) Kagura (Tashiro area) Naeba (Takenokodaira and Daishamen slopes - this may change depending on snow conditions) Until 25th May: Kagura (the main Kagura area via Mitsumata) All other resorts in the region are closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 5th May 2014, AM: Kagura (Tashiro): 210cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 90cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 5th May 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day May 2014 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa - and the last day of the 13/14 snow season for GALA Yuzawa, Naeba and the Tashiro area of Kagura. We had some rain yesterday, very light on and off in the day but heaiver at times overnight, but the sun is showing itself through the remaining clouds now and more and more blue sky seems to be appearing. Clouds moving on by the looks. It should be a nice day with a high not reaching 20 degrees in town. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Some lovely blue skies and equally lovely fluffy white clouds over Kagura yesterday, and lots of people on the slopes as well. Crowded!! Still great cover of snow on those main Kagura runs with one more week to go. At the time of writing it seems that the Mitsumata lift is still running and you're able to ski back down to the Ropeway as well. No need for a pesky shuttle bus yet. Can they keep that going until the weekend? As you can see from the webcam image from the top of Ishiuchi Maruyama (below), snow from the valley - has all completely gone and right up to the top of that resort as well. We're truly into 'green' mode here now. It is a beautiful morning here with fine clear blue skies and just a slight breeze. A high temperature of around 24 degrees is forecast for the day, with similar conditions expected tomorrow. 25th is planned as the last day. --- Here's the lifts that are operating at Kagura: -Mitsumata Ropeway (open 8am on weekdays; 7:30am on Saturdays and holidays) -Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift -Mitsumata Number 3 romance lift -Mitsumata Number 2 romance lift (open when very busy; closed on weekdays) -Kagura Gondola -Kagura Number 1 quad lift [*** on hold early on Saturday due to strong winds] -Kagura Number 1 romance lift (closed on weekdays) --- Courses open: -Gondola course -Kagura main course -Technical course -Giant course -Kagura park The Mitsumata area is now what they call a 'connecting area' back down to the Mitsumata Ropeway - so basically you can just use it at the end of your day to get back down to the Ropeway and base. --- Until 25th May: Kagura (the main Kagura area via Mitsumata Ropeway) All other resorts in the region are closed for the season. --- Official resort snow depths @ Tuesday 6th May 2014, AM: Kagura (Mitsumata): 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 19th May 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 833cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 64 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th, 13th January and 7th March) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 204cm reported on 17 days March 2014 snowfall 191cm reported on 12 days April 2014 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day May 2014 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 23rd May 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Friday 23rd May 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. At last things not as wet today though it's keeping cool, chilly almost. Last two days coming up at Kagura. And the really good news is that they are not going to have to bring out the shuttle bus connecting the top of the Mitsumata Ropeway with the Kagura Gondola... yes, no need for a bus and you can still get over to Kagura and ski down the Mitsumata slope to get back to the Ropeway at the end of the day. They have done well! Especially considering all the talk of less snow than usual this season. Interesting for sure. Anyway, hopefully the sun will be out tomorrow and Sunday - maybe some cloud - but for the moment the forecast does not seem to be warning of any rainfall. Fingers crossed for good weather. It is going to be crowded over the weekend! • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 25th May 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 833cm Posted on Sunday 25th May 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So there we are. After what seems like an extremely long 'spring season', the last ski lifts of the season came to a standstill a few hours ago. That's it, the 2013/2014 season is now officially over in the Yuzawa area; a season that was 184 days long according to Kagura. It hasn't been the best season in terms of consistent and heavy snowfall, but even saying that there was certainly no shortage of snow. Interestingly the main run up at Kagura even now still has decent snow cover and effectively they could probably stay open for even longer if they wanted to (...but aren't!) It's curious how that happened, but that's Mother Nature for you I suppose. Please check the archive reports here on SnowJapan to refresh the memory on how the season went - not only this last season but going back to 2002. 22nd November 2014 is the date to look forward to with the opening of Kagura and the start of the 2014/2015 season in the area - so that's less than 6 months! In the meantime, we have some hot conditions to, er, look forward to. Things getting more humid, then 'rainy season' around July and then usually a hot August. Followed by a lovely autumn and the excitement of the snow on the horizon. Today was actually borderline hot and the first time I have felt things being a bit humid this year. That trend is only going to continue now for a while. Naeba is of course home to the Fuji Rock Festival at the end of July. Apparently at the moment there are over 100 different acts booked in to perform with headliners including Franz Ferdinand, Basement Jaxx, Arcade Fire, Manic Street Preachers, Jack Johnson and The Flaming Lips. That's all from Friday 25th July until Sunday 27th July. At the base of the Naeba resort in Yuzawa (and actually a very large distance from Mount Fuji!) This is where I leave you until next season. The Now reports will start up again on the other side of summer. Have a great summer wherever you are, thanks for reading and see you in autumn.
