Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 70cm Snowfall at base this season 371cm Posted on Thursday 18th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . This is being written during a mid snow clearing coffee break; there is a lot of snow out there to clear, and I'm the one to do it. I am not sure how much snow was on the ground this morning; there was considerable blowing and drifting, and the snow was pretty heavy and wind-packed. It was somewhere around a meter, but what to say officially... 70cm? 80cm? At least the cars are moving here, even if our windows are still completely filled in (snow reaching to the eaves; low, I'll admit, but still more than two and a half meters tall). The sun did come out for one moment, and was immediately welcomed by insane winds that completely obscured the roads, but which disappeared as the snow came back in. Ah, the wonders of nature. One word from the wife: a friend reported that there was no one at Akakura Onsen yesterday. Take advantage of this snow, people! Warm up for the season—in powder! The roads are in pretty good shape, actually (OK, you'll have to dig out your car, but..... A meter of snow! One more cup of coffee, and back out to drive the snow-wrangling beast. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Cold and clear this morning; Akakan and Ikenotaira picked the perfect day to start the season! Just a little extra snow overnight—maybe 25-30cm (funny when a foot of snow seems like "just a little"). It probably won't last, though, as the forecast for the near future is for continued snowfall. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some really nice snow overnight and continuing to fall in Myoko. Big, crystally flakes; can we say it's perfectly Christmassy? (Merry Christmas, readers!) Nice stuff that's easy to shovel—and, of course, to ski on/in. Hopefully it will keep going through the day, as we can still use a bit more base, particularly for those who want to head into the backcountry. It's still pretty bushy out there, and valleys are not completely filled in yet—be careful with this light snow on a firm base. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow just keeps on falling here. The forecast was for some sun, at least from midday, but apart from a brief moment where it got a little brighter there's no sign of things stopping at the moment. Not a lot of fresh snow since last night, but it's coming down pretty well now. Should be nice and soft on the slopes (I would be out there, except the mighty snowthrower has decided not to turn over this morning.... the old Myoko story of waiting for the repair guys). Cold today, too; the car tells me -4°, while some of the ski areas are showing even colder. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 541cm Posted on Tuesday 30th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another snow cycle has moved in, with some nice stuff falling from about 7:30 this morning. It's a pretty common pattern: some sunny skies, a day of light rain, then things get colder and the snow starts to fall. When we really get into January I hope the other main weather pattern—snow all the time—kicks in! I'm just reporting 5cm of fresh so far; there will be more during the day; at the moment the rate has picked up to where we might get 2cm or more per hour. So a really good ski day, as we move toward the end of 2014. A little loss of snowpack after sun and then rain, but we're getting a good refill at the moment. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some really nice snow through the day yesterday — a little wet down low, drier and nice higher up. Not a huge accumulation so far - maybe 20cm of fresh - but it looks like some heavy snow is moving in, from tonight into tomorrow. Don't know if it will be the "historic" snowfall that the media was predicting earlier in the week (and historic here could be scary big snow), but looks like a good serving in time for your New Year's enjoyment. It's also a little bit warmer today, although that also looks likely to change soon! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow today! And we're seeing some sun at the moment, making it that much more fun to enjoy the powder. Sorry not to get a report out yesterday; after a crazy end to the first day of the year—trains stopped locally, expressway shut down, roads in a pretty bad state—follow up was pretty hard on the 2nd. Today, though, we're back in order, ready to report, and with good news for snow hounds. Namely, I think we've had 80 cm or so over these two days - hard to tell with some winds along with the heavy snow, but lots of fresh. The sun isn't staying out yet, but there's no wind at the moment, either. Akakura Kanko: 310cm, -8° Akakura Onsen: 267cm, -2° (love the precise depths this year!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy New Year! And tons of snow to get things going. A lot of wind as well; less than last night, but it's blowing pretty hard at times. Hard to tell how much snow fell overnight, as things were drifting a lot, but probably 50+ cm, and possibly more. It's still snowing steadily out there, with a few fresh centimeters per hour coming down. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . There's no place like home.... The snow began falling at around 7:30 this morning, and it's coming down really, really good (OK, not great grammar, but it just sounds right). Looks like there could be a pretty good accumulation by tonight; only 10cm or so right now, but it's starting to build up. The reason for my wistfulness is that I'm actually in Niseko, where there's been some good snow, but nothing like the crazy snowfall we've had in Myoko this year - and nothing against Niseko, either! Our information for today is guaranteed fresh, too, with the Myoko team dutifully reporting on the actual conditions on the ground. Which are: go out and ski today! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 831cm Posted on Monday 12th January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow! There is a lot more snow here than there was yesterday. It's hard to tell how much is the real total lately, with a little bit of wind and great big snow walls to kind of confuse things, but at time of snowthrowing early today it was about 60cm. Nice, snow, too, after some heavier/wetter fall over the past few days. Other than that, things are just going smoothly along in Myoko, my hometown: the snow is falling steadily, the lifts are running smoothly; the mighty snowthrower, a regular part of these reports (and also a regular delayer of them) is just growling along; and all the lifts have been going like clockwork. Our daily reports are not posted on behalf of ski areas or any other business or organisation. Since first going online in 1999, the integrity of this website has always been our top priority, and it is something we are not prepared to compromise. All content is carefully created and written by humans who share a passion for the subject and what SnowJapan stands for. About SnowJapan.com About the daily reporting on SnowJapan.com
