Really nice snowfall through the day and into the night; probably a total of 30-40cm (hard to know for sure, as I snow-throwed last night once, and there's an additional 10-15 this morning, and the reports aren't in early or don't really reflect the new snow). This morning it is sunny and beautiful, a perfect day for enjoying the snow. No wind yet either, although the national news says we should be seeing some breezes. Maybe the low-pressure cell has completely moved out of this area. A little bit of concern for the backcountry, as people were reporting yesterday that the new snow was breaking pretty easily on the hard snow below. The sun today should help stabilize things in the longer run, but we could see slides in the meantime. I'll be out there and being careful as well. If it's going to be spring, I say, let it be sunny and warm so we can enjoy a different style of skiing - like hiking out in the woods, skiing in shorts - you know what I mean. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . This is being written during a mid snow clearing coffee break; there is a lot of snow out there to clear, and I'm the one to do it. I am not sure how much snow was on the ground this morning; there was considerable blowing and drifting, and the snow was pretty heavy and wind-packed. It was somewhere around a meter, but what to say officially... 70cm? 80cm? At least the cars are moving here, even if our windows are still completely filled in (snow reaching to the eaves; low, I'll admit, but still more than two and a half meters tall). The sun did come out for one moment, and was immediately welcomed by insane winds that completely obscured the roads, but which disappeared as the snow came back in. Ah, the wonders of nature. One word from the wife: a friend reported that there was no one at Akakura Onsen yesterday. Take advantage of this snow, people! Warm up for the season—in powder! The roads are in pretty good shape, actually (OK, you'll have to dig out your car, but..... A meter of snow! One more cup of coffee, and back out to drive the snow-wrangling beast. Just a little extra snow overnight—maybe 25-30cm (funny when a foot of snow seems like "just a little"). It probably won't last, though, as the forecast for the near future is for continued snowfall. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow today! And we're seeing some sun at the moment, making it that much more fun to enjoy the powder. Sorry not to get a report out yesterday; after a crazy end to the first day of the year—trains stopped locally, expressway shut down, roads in a pretty bad state—follow up was pretty hard on the 2nd. Today, though, we're back in order, ready to report, and with good news for snow hounds. Namely, I think we've had 80 cm or so over these two days - hard to tell with some winds along with the heavy snow, but lots of fresh. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another snow cycle has moved in, with some nice stuff falling from about 7:30 this morning. It's a pretty common pattern: some sunny skies, a day of light rain, then things get colder and the snow starts to fall. When we really get into January I hope the other main weather pattern—snow all the time—kicks in! I'm just reporting 5cm of fresh so far; there will be more during the day; at the moment the rate has picked up to where we might get 2cm or more per hour. So a really good ski day, as we move toward the end of 2014. A little loss of snowpack after sun and then rain, but we're getting a good refill at the moment. Hard to tell how much snow fell overnight, as things were drifting a lot, but probably 50+ cm, and possibly more. It's still snowing steadily out there, with a few fresh centimeters per hour coming down. Some chance of the gondolas slowing down/stopping if the wind does pick up again, but otherwise a good, moderately cold, snowy day to start 2105. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Some really nice snow through the day yesterday — a little wet down low, drier and nice higher up. Not a huge accumulation so far - maybe 20cm of fresh - but it looks like some heavy snow is moving in, from tonight into tomorrow. Don't know if it will be the "historic" snowfall that the media was predicting earlier in the week (and historic here could be scary big snow), but looks like a good serving in time for your New Year's enjoyment. It's also a little bit warmer today, although that also looks likely to change soon! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's a beautiful day out there - too bad for a lot of people that the three-day weekend was over yesterday! It's partly cloudy, with a nice warm (but not too hot) sun shining down. It looked pretty cloudy to the north and the ocean, but the clouds are dissipating as they get closer, so it's still mostly sunny. The resorts aren't reporting any new snow, but there is about 5cm of light stuff on top of yesterday's big fall. Besides a Christmas-card-like day (trees heavy with snow, sparkling flakes in the sunlight), the Shin-Akakura area is holding a nightly saké event at a kamakura (Japanese-style igloo) right next to the Sky Cable gondola at Akakan. Nice way to absorb some local culture, with all local saké. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's one of those days where it looks like something is about to happen, but it's not doing anything just yet. We had some pretty good snow falling last night; wet, but some pretty good snowfall. By morning, though, it only was about 15cm in total (and still pretty heavy). Right now it's dark over Mt. Myoko and Mt. Kurohime just to the south; it seems like a lot of weather sort of sneaks in through the gap between the two mountains. The marker flags outside are also hanging absolutely limp - not a hint of wind. Snow is also on the forecast, but it's not here yet, either. The good news is that we didn't have any rain in the end yesterday, as gloomy as it seemed early in the day. Right now, we're just waiting for whatever happens next—hopefully a good snowfall and a reset on the hill. Offpiste there was still some good snow remaining on north faces, but that will need some help soon, too (and the temperatures are not as low as the resorts are reporting; it was 0° at the base of Akakan at 7:30 this morning—Ikenotaira and Myoko Snow Park win the honest reporting award for the day).
