The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yes, yesterday was a very fine day after that very decent amount of snowfall. Snow clouds moved back in though and this morning there's some new cm to report from just a few at base to 10cm on the top Yamabiko runs. It wasn't as cold overnight and actually now the temperature is just under 0C though it should stay around there for the day and tomorrow should be cooler. It's snowing very lightly here as I write this and a look at the cams shows very poor visibility up on the mountain - perhaps snowing more heavily up there. Unconfirmed! Thick fog seems to be covering the top half. It should be snowing on and off, hopefully more on than off, for the day and also tomorrow. One thing that we have lacked this season is consistent full-on conditions... like what we had the other day, but regularly and continuing for days. We could do with some of that. But anyway. Yes, later on in the week a warm spell is forecast. Sunny and warmer on Friday and there's even a chance of some rain in the village at the weekend but fingers crossed even if we get that it won't last long and turn into snow. Let's forget about that until later in the week! For now, conditions should still be really good again today. Just know the layout and where you're going because visibility is very limited up there. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A good old heavy dump of Nozawa snow is always wonderful to witness and the last 48 hours or so has really delivered. Heavy snow yesterday following on from the overnight snow with 20-35cm of additional snowfall being reported by the skijo across the mountain. Just totting up the numbers... Yamabiko - 88cm Uenotaira - 63cm Hikage - 66cm Nagasaka - 56cm Karasawa - 50cm Including the few cm or so overnight, that's 85cm in 2 days for the top runs as reported by the resort. :) It's always great to get a decent amount down at village level as well, it really adds to the excitement. Some of the weekend crowds may not have appreciated the snow conditions, but this morning will surely be one for everyone. We have clearer skies this morning, the sun is already starting up and it looks like it will be a fine day. Sorry, make that an awesome day. And regular readers will know that SnowJapan doesn't like hyperbole in it's reports --- I just reckon that today should be one of the days of the season. What's more, snow is on the way again by the end of the day and I should be reporting more in my next report. Anyway it's time for me to get kitted out and see if it does actually deliver. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa and welcome to the weekend. The village was bustling last night as people arrived for their weekend fix - it's going to be another busy one here! A cold and icy start to the day with the temps down to -8 degrees as of 8:30am. The resort isn't actually saying that the top is much colder than the base which is unusual. The sun is out and it's a fine morning. Happily we have some fresh snow to play in... those getting up there early will have anyway. 5cm across most of the mountain during the day yesterday and this morning another 5-15cm of fresh snow to report; with 10cm reported from Hikage and Nagasaka and 15cm reported on the Uenotaira slopes. There's some snow to shovel down in the village as well this morning which is always a good start. As good as news of fresh snow is, we want more. Obviously. Tonight it should be snowing and it's looking good for a decent dump of snow overnight so I am looking forward to reporting that in my next report. Doesn't look like it'll be prolonged though with clearer forecast for Monday but back to decent snowfall around Tuesday. So things are looking promising. All lifts are go! Have a fun weekend. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Ah yes, it is a good morning. Lots of snowfall to report this morning. Here's what the resort themselves are reporting: Yamabiko - 50cm Uenotaira - 30cm Hikage - 35cm Nagasaka - 35cm Karasawa - 30cm So a cool 50cm up on the top Yamabiko runs. There's definitely 30cm down at base too with cars needing to be found within their new snow coverings. This is the kind of morning we like! Well, I do. :) -4C now and not forecast to get any higher for the day. Should be slightly less cold tomorrow but not snowing. Then after that as I think I mentioned yesterday there's some more heavy snowfall due around Tuesday. It should be a very good week. It goes without saying that conditions should be great today. Visibility is poor especially on the top half of the mountain. Exciting, but remember - care needed. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After all that talk of numbers yesterday, get a load of this. Snowfall reported by the resort since yesterday morning, after the snowfall we had yesterday during the day time and overnight. Yamabiko - 34cm Uenotaira - 40cm Hikage - 45cm Nagasaka - 40cm Karasawa - 35cm Yamabiko snow depth is also back up to 3m this morning. Yes, it has been a Nozawa-like snowy 24 hours here. A bit of a surprise at just how much we have got, but a good surprise. It is continuing to snow as well, so let's get some more out of it. The forecast does tell us to expect the snow clouds to ease off though during the day, to be followed by a clear and sunny day tomorrow. As I mentioned before temps are set to creep up a bit from tomorrow for a few days and we still might get some rain late Saturday though hopefully that will be kept to a minimum and it will be snowing where it really matters - on the slopes. We'll see. For now though should be fantastic conditions this morning and then that possibly bluebird tomorrow. Nice! The latest Furano Now report can be found here . With the spring weather in full force now the landscape has changed from one of pure white to one of vivid green growth in the fields and the colourful pinks of the cherry blossoms. Winter is over! The snow line of the resort has retreated well up the mountain and all traces of white will soon be gone. Reflecting on the season, I would have to say it was the best season that I can ever recall in Furano. While resorts on Honshu were dealt a bad hand and struggled for snow, the opposite happened here in Furano in 15/16. From mid December onwards we received copious quantities of fresh snow on an almost daily basis. Needless to say the powder skiing was excellent both on and off piste. Although temperatures were negative and wintery, they were noticeably warmer than the usual Furano norms and I don't recall getting cold fingers or feet during the season. The village saw a large increase in the number of international visitors, who surely left town with fond memories of the great skiing, delicious food and the friendly locals. No doubt we will see many of them back again next year to get more great skiing and to continue to explore the local restaurants. Many visitors used Furano as a base and did day trips to the other Hokkaido powder belt ski areas of Kamui, Tomamu, Asahidake and Kurodake. There sure is a lot of terrain variety when all of those options are factored in. Guided day trips were a really popular option and many people also used rental cars to get around. For the next few months I will be enjoying the warmth of summer. My skis have been serviced and put away, and will not be out until next December. I'll be back in touch in November as we start the run up to the opening of the 16/17 season. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Ah, yes... now this is more like it! I am very happy to be able to report lots of fresh snow down here in the village area and just hearing the numbers from the resort: Yamabiko - 35cm Uenotaira - ?cm Hikage - 30cm Nagasaka - 30cm Karasawa - 20cm So up to 35cm of fresh snow on the upper slopes this morning, with Uenotaira area yet to report. (I suspect they may well report more). I haven't been hearing of any reports of lift or course closings early this morning, but care will be needed with these quickly changing conditions. It is suitably cold (minus 7 degrees here at base and a very cold indeed minus 14 degrees up top),but has also been very windy overnight. The wind has calmed down a lot though now and actually (and unfortunately) the snow has been easing off - down here anyway - and even some clouds breaking up showing a bit of sky in places. I'm looking at a few forecasts here now and they are saying different things... cloud for the day, snow showers for the day. Looks like overnight was the peak of what we are getting this time anyway. Saturday onwards into next week is looking to be rather snowy as well, so things are looking up. Hopefully that mild dry spell is behind us! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. I'm happy to report that after another mild day - it was a balmy 6 degrees as the resort closed yesterday - temperatures have been dropping since late last night and it is going to be a much colder day today, currently -3 degrees at base. There has also been some snowfall, albeit very limited. The resort is reporting 5cm on Uenotaira, and 1cm on the other areas of the mountain. Snow showers are reported for the day and just now it's actually a bit sunny down here in the village. Upper areas of the mountain are covered in cloud though and as of a short while ago it was snowing lightly up there. Not quite the huge dump of snow we are looking for, but definitely an improvement. We are keeping hopeful for the chance of decent snow overnight tonight and while late on tomorrow and Thursday are forecast to be mostly dry, snow is due over the weekend. Potential. Come on, bring it on! Let's see what I can report tomorrow morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Uenotaira pulled through later in the morning yesterday - they must have been moving tons of snow as they ended up reporting 50cm of fresh snow with the snow depth up there jumping up to 235cm. Impressive. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get up there to sample, but I heard brave stories of happiness at being able to play in the new snow. It didn't clear up in the end yesterday and was snowing for most of the time. This morning it is still snowing lightly and the resort is reporting 8cm of fresh snow on the Nagasaka and Hikage areas, 10cm on Uenotaira and 15cm up at Yamabiko. Keeping cold and as of 9am about -6 degrees here in the village area, with a low temperature of -13 degrees on the mountain. It should be snow showers for the day today with a break from snowfall tomorrow (just cloud?)...... and some potentially heavy snowfall again coming over the weekend. Yokatta, great to see winter return. I am going to get up there today to sample the new snow. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday was another really good day out on the mountain and some fine stashes of snow to be found. It's another cold morning here with a temperature of -10 degrees on the top area of the mountain, around -5C at base. The resort is reporting 10-20cm of fresh snow on the (lower-upper) slopes and there was a corresponding nice layer of snow to brush off the car this morning. While it is still snowing, it's forecast to ease off and just be cloudy for most of the day today (perhaps a chance of some sun later too?), but it will remain cold. Snow is forecast for tomorrow and probably into Sunday as well. So if you are here for the weekend come prepared for snow and cold conditions. A week can make a big difference. It should be another great day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I was hoping to bring news of decent numbers this morning, but it's just 5cm or so on most of the mountain with the Karasawa are reporting a lonely 0cm. That is at 7:30am for the top slopes and 8am for the lower slopes. But, we need to give it a chance as it only started early morning - it is snowing and it's from now that it will build up so there will already be more out there than those numbers imply. The snow is coming down, visibility is limited and everything looks the same colour up top in particular, it's cold. Yes, a good winters day in Nozawa. Hopefully conditions will be good out there and continue to be with snowfall forecast for the day and hopefully tomorrow too. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa, and a good one it is too. I'll quickly paper over the not particularly nice and rather wet yesterday and zoom in on the fact that apparently we have 30cm of fresh up on Yamabiko, 25cm on Uenotaira and 15cm on the rest of the mountain. I can definitely confirm the need to get all the snow off the car this morning which is always a pleasure. (Well, almost always!) So yes the early March storm has arrived. It's cold, it has been snowing. Overnight there were strong winds making a noise, but it's calmer now. The snowfall seems to be easing off, but snow showers are due on and off for the day. The mountain is covered in cloud and visibility seems poor on the upper areas and more decent down below. More of the same over the coming days. Let's rack up some decent snow!
