Early on this morning there was a lot of fog around but now the lifts are spinning it has lifted leaving us with a good view of the frosty looking mountain. There has been a few cm of fresh snow since yesterday and it's a cold and calm morning. The groomers are looking inviting and I believe all of the courses and tree runs should be open as normal. Still the chance of a bit of fresh snowfall tomorrow though I wouldn't expect much from it; it should be remaining cold though. Warmer conditions are forecast for mid-week. For now though a good cold morning to get some sliding done. Have a good Saturday wherever you are. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Great news this morning! Wintery conditions with snow falling and a bit of a wind blowing... and Madarao Kogen reporting 15-20cm of fresh snowfall! And a decent layer on top of the car here near base as well... Can't say that I was expecting that! Not much to see at the moment. The snow is expected to ease off by around lunchtime and then the skies should start clearing up leaving us with lots of sunshine for most of the rest of the week. Tomorrow should be a good day to be here if you can! Temperatures are still forecast to get warmer from tomorrow possibly rising to around 10 degrees and perhaps slightly above on Friday, before getting colder again after that. (Not much in terms of potential snow on the forecast though unfortunately). There's some cloud up at the start of the day but blue sky as well and we're expecting another warm spring day in the region. Rain is likely something soon, either starting later on today or early tomorrow morning - there's a fairly high chance though that it will be wet for Saturday. Sunday should be clearer, and colder too, and so is the choice of the days over the weekend. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao Kogen. Yesterday we enjoyed some fine weather on what was the last day of the 2015-2016 season for Madarao Kogen (neighbouring Tangram Ski Circus is open through until Sunday). And this will be my last report of the 2015-2016 season. Once a season gets started, it really does flash by way too quickly - mostly from having so much fun, though this season there were other things going on… things that we really are not used to! It has definitely been something of a unique season for this region and indeed many areas of Japan. This season definitely ‘wins’ the unwanted award for ‘the least snow during a season’ of recent times at least, and locals of quite an age will also be hard pushed to remember a season with as little snowfall as during 2015-2016. There was of course snow – and indeed in amounts that some ski resorts in other parts of the world would be glad to get. And I have enjoyed some very fine days this last season, and I know lots of other people who have visited and had a great time. The difference this last season has been that there just wasn’t much of that full-on, almost overwhelmingly heavy and consistent snowfall that we are used to (and so love) in this region. Yes, we are usually spoilt; but we like being spoilt! ‘Less snow’ was not just an issue for this part of northern Nagano Prefecture either with most ski resort areas of the main island of Honshu receiving less snow than usual in this ‘danto’ (or ‘mild winter’). Here’s the amount of snow that I have observed over the past three seasons here in Madarao: 2015-2016 season: 483cm total 2014-2015 season: 1055cm total 2013-2014 season: 734cm total As you can see, this season I observed less than half of the total amount of snow that I did last season. That’s pretty significant, even considering that last year was quite famous for being one of particularly abundant snowfall. The season before we still got about 1.5 times the amount of snow that we did this season. Just going back to that comment about ‘being spoilt’. We’re not used to worrying about snowfall – it just falls, and usually in huge amounts - but this season everyone was, and it was a constant topic of conversation throughout the season. It has to be said that the resort did an excellent job in keeping open and the slopes in decent condition until the end of March as originally planned.. helped along by a decent amount of March snowfall (more than in March last year actually!), and of course lots of hard work and effort. Otsukaresama deshita! I think the main point to take from this season wrap report is this... If you are reading researching about Madarao Kogen - and indeed any of the other regions covered in the reports on SnowJapan - please do take the time to look back at previous seasons to get an idea of what is ‘normal’ or ‘average’. Because 2015/2016 was certainly not ‘normal’ or ‘average’. Let’s hope we get back to normal next season. I’m confident we will! In the meantime, I hope you have a great spring and summer and I hope to see you back here in late autumn. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello and welcome back! The resort this afternoon is reporting 40cm of snow up on the top runs of the resort after the snowfall of yesterday. Exciting times. It's looking really nice and white up there now on the webcams. A bit more down here at base and in the village. It has struggled to warm up beyond freezing point at base today, and we have had sporadic snow but at the moment there are breaks in the cloud and I can see some blue sky out there as well. The forecast is for cloud/sleet/snow into tomorrow. This spell of winter weather will make way for clearer conditions and a warm up later in the week and over the weekend. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . 10cm of fresh snow on the top Yamabiko runs this morning to report from Nozawa, with thin layer down at base as well - just almost covering up the ground from about 650m upwards. Snow is forecast for the day, so here's hoping that we can get as much out of it as possible. It probably won't rise much over 0 degrees here for the day, with Yamabiko recording temps of -5 degrees as of 7:30am this morning. It doesn't look like there's any change to lift operations and course openings just yet. No doubt the resort is as keen as we are to open up more! Looking ahead, the forecast for Wednesday into Thursday in looking particularly encouraging. Before that though we can expect milder temperatures again early week. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall on the top Yamabiko runs this morning and a nice cold temperature of -6C, with a snow depth of 65cm. They are labelling conditions as 'powder', and I would expect some nice conditions up there this morning. We got a bit of snowfall down at base and village level as well, perhaps 5-10cm or so in places. No further runs opening up just yet. The resort will certainly be getting more of the upper part of the mountain open as soon as they can, so we obviously need a bit more snow for that to happen. Hopefully by this time next week we'll see some big changes. For tomorrow though, the sun should be back along with milder conditions. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . More of Nozawa Onsen is open this morning. The Uenotaira quad and the Skyline connecting lift are both operating this morning, with the Uenotaira course area now open - over 10km of course open to slide down now. OK back to yesterday. The winds calmed down yesterday and at around 1pm the Gondola started moving again. This morning 10cm of snow is reported on the Yamabiko and Uenotaira slopes - perhaps not as much as we were hoping for and expecting looking at the forecast last night - and this morning it has just been cloudy but the resort is updating it's info with light snow falling on those open slopes as of 10am. Fingers crossed that will continue and we'll get new cm to report again. -8C up top and about -2C at the moment in the village, so a cold morning. The forecast is for snowfall today (on and off) and tomorrow. The weather is proving to be a bit difficult to read right at the moment though. Anyway for now good snow conditions on upper slopes of Nozawa and quite a lot of people around this morning to get out and enjoy it. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . 12cm of new snow is being reported from the top Yamabiko area of Nozawa Onsen this morning and a cold -6 degrees as of 8am. Snow down to the village as well and it is still snowing this morning with snow forecast now for the day and through until Monday. So hopefully we could be on for a good dump of snow and more of the resort will very soon be able to open. For the moment operations are unchanged this morning. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Nozawa reporting 30cm of fresh snow up top on Yamabiko and 25cm on Uenotaira runs this morning, along with cold -7C temperatures. Needless to say, powder conditions. There's not much to see up top with poor visibility but the people getting out there should be rewarded with great snow conditions. The resort is still not reporting snow depth on lower runs, presumably just because they aren't open, but we have had another layer on the runs at base though there isn't enough to open yet. It is snowing now though and should be throughout the day and into tomorrow. We are all hoping that it won't be long before more of the mountain can open, though the snow does look like it will probably be finished sometime tomorrow with a chance of sun on Tuesday. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa, where the resort are telling us of 26cm of new snowfall on the top runs where the official snow depth is now 130cm. More snow down on lower slopes and base as well, though it does not look like more of the mountain will be open today so lifts and courses remain the same. At least for the moment. Light snow at the moment though the local forecast does tell us to expect less today and perhaps even some clearing up. Tomorrow seems to be a mix of cloud and a chance of clearer weather. After the poor visibility of the last few days on mountain, it will good to get a chance to see more up there. There's much fewer people around early today, so should be a lot of new snow to discover. I'll let you know how it was! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A bit more snowfall this morning with between 5-7cm reported on the upper parts of the resort and just a bit down below too. It is cloudy at the moment with light snow trying to fall still at higher elevations. Hoping for more snow today and tomorrow. 11am this morning is the Grand Opening "Opening Festival" for Nozawa Onsen resort, to be held near the top Nagasaka Gondola Station. There should be some sake on offer and no doubt some other goodies and probably your change to shake hands with the Nozawa Onsen mascot character. Perhaps worth a look if you are up there when it happens. There are more lifts and courses open from this morning and it's now easier to say which aren't moving than which are moving. See below for the latest there. Courses wise, the area to the right of the Nagasaka Gondola as you look from the village - including the Skyline course - is not yet open. Other than that, most of the main runs of the resort are open from today. Today is the first day of the three day long weekend in Japan and so it should be quite busy today and tomorrow especially.
