The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . All that thunder and lightning and wind paid off, as we got a pretty good snowfall overnight. No where near the 80cm the news channels were saying was likely, but at least we're seeing ski areas finally (apart from always-increasing Seki) raising there snowfall totals. That's especially good news for the resorts on the south side, which had much lower levels than the Akakuras and Seki. Light snow continues to fall, although it's not adding that much to the 30cm or so we had here at the base level. Looking very positive for Saturday and Sunday, though. A lot of graupel (soft hail) fell, especially high up, and the grains were pretty big. If we do get more heavy snow on top of that level, be careful until it's clear that the round stuff has bonded well with the rest of the snowpack. It's the first time this season I get to say be careful about potential avalanche danger! But, with those high winds, too, it's a good time to be a little cautious on lee slopes and most steep slopes if more snow does fall. And at Akakura Kanko, the snow meant that the town-run Yuki Saka Ba, an igloo bar featuring Myoko's three saké brands, finally opens tomorrow night after being postponed since the beginning of the month. But we ended up with a nice light dusting and not much accumulation (my ruler, which I used officially, says 7 cm). Snow is on the menu for the rest of today and through the weekend, so we continue to hope for a genuine, generous serving of real Myoko-weight snow. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A super-bluebird day in Myoko today; not a cloud in the local sky, cold temps, bright white snow.... Wish the snow would keep falling for days and days, but it is nice to have a day like this so people can enjoy seeing what a beautiful area it really is. Still pretty brown up there, but Mt. Myoko is shining and white today. Looks like snow is back on tomorrow, and hopefully it will be a big one (heavy snow is forecast). Then a day or two to enjoy it before things get seriously weird and the freezing line moves all the way up to 3000 meters on Saturday. I hope they're wrong on this, but I doubt it, and that warm spell is accompanied with heavy rains. If that does happen, on top of fresh snow, stay out of the mountains (maybe it will be raining so hard people won't even think of heading out). Rain on new snow? Avalanches will be happening everywhere, so really really think about doing something else. If the snow is settled, it's not such a big worry, but this sudden change could bring some pretty extreme conditions. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Oh, it is snowing out there today, and it's the real, big-flake, some-centimeters-per-hour kind now. Warms my heart just looking out the window (but also spurs me to some action on the slopes!). Looks like we'll be getting continuous snowfall for the next few days - possible clear weather tomorrow - with possible heavy snow again on Tuesday. Then something is moving in that will move the freezing line to (and, remember, this is a prediction, and they have been wrong) 2,000 meters. That is not good news, especially because rain is also predicted. Let us hope this is wrong. A little caution if you do head offpiste to steeper slopes (and, I know, they look good because there is less brush on them). There is a good chance of sluffing as fresh new snow piles up on fairly firm stuff underneath - going with a buddy is a must, saying no always a reasonable option. We had some pretty strong winds earlier in the morning, which increases the risk even more. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is cold and clear this morning; -9° on the car thermometer, and similar numbers being reported by the resorts that have submitted reports. Blue skies and sparkly snow as well; no clouds overhead at the moment, although it is pretty gray to the north over the sea, with the clouds slowly moving toward us. Hopefully today will see a few more centimeters added to the snowpack, before what looks like a sunny and slightly warmer day tomorrow. The heavy snow predicted for Friday has now slid into Saturday; I hope this doesn't follow the too-often pattern of "heavy" becoming "showers." We could still use a whole lot all at once, especially for the backcountry. Speaking of which, the snow is pretty stable but you can still get whacked by the bush (rather than the other way around). Akakura Kanko has finally reached 2 meters. Yea! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The flakes may be small, but they keep on a'fallin. On top of the 10cm I reported yesterday, it's kept building up with an additional 23cm (at least in the spot where I stuck my ruler; let's say 20 to be more scientific). And it keeps on falling; it's beginning to look a lot like the Myoko we know and love - well, the snow walls aren't there yet, but there is now some hope. I'm happy to add that, in the time I've been writing, it's picked up quite a bit, and it really is starting to look Myoko-rashii ("like"; your Japanese suffix for the day). People are reporting some pretty good fun in the backcountry as well, even if it is still pretty bushy out there. The price of being basically a rain forest in summer (the green season is pretty nice, if often wet). Gotta get this out! I keep looking out the window and talking backcountry with the locals.... it's looking good to sum things up! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The trees are covered in a nice, light coating of snow this morning. Not a huge amount of fresh, perhaps 10cm or a little more at the base of Akakan, but a welcome addition and snow continues to fall. It's the same small flakes that we've seen almost exclusively this year. We miss seeing those great big, vision-obscuring flakes falling hard and fast. Could still happen, since we're just now into February. It's light, but it keeps on falling, and snow is on the forecast for all days except Thursday and then there is the chance of heavy snow on Friday. So it may not be a lot all at once, but it looks like we will get some additional snow added to the pack. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early-morning departure this morning, and only Akakura Onsen has made its report for the day, but it feels like the calm before the storm today. Or at least we hope! The skies are dark, light snow is falling, and it just has that feel that a good snowfall is on the way. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but I've decided to be more positive (a few days off skiing can improve your spirits!). Again, only Akakura Onsen is new today; other temperatures should be more in line with -1° it is reporting. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A good day and night of snow - real Myoko-style, hard-to-drive snow. It's hard to tell the total snowfall, as there was a lot of wind and drifting through the day (the cars in our drive were buried on the south/lee side, not covered on the north/windward side. Looking at quiet/level spots, the total was probably 50cm, although when it was really coming down it seemed like there would be more. On a drive up to Seki Onsen yesterday afternoon it was almost impossible to see at times, and there were a couple of cars unable to make the climb up the hill (get those chains on early, cityfolk!). The snow is nice and soft, too. I can always tell when the snowblower cuts through the big drifts without struggling, and everything gets totally obscured by light blowing flakes. OK, it's not as scientific as when I was doing a regular snow study plot outside, but it works! Tomorrow looks good as well, with the potential for another good heavy fall. Light snow is forecast for today as well, although at the moment it's clear over the mountains, with dark clouds off to the north over the ocean. Hope to have more good news for you tomorrow! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A good day of snow, followed by a cloudless sky... Like to see more continuous days of snow, but we got a pretty good addition to the snowpack. Looks like a meter around the house, but that's more due to the drifts caused by high winds blowing the snow in from the north. If we average it out, we're looking at about 50cm of fresh, which is not bad and certainly welcome. And it is really blue, cloudless and probably going to get warmer through the day. The winds do raise the possibility of wind loading higher up; there's still way too many small trees and brush out there, which might help anchor things, but where we do have open steep lee slopes there's always some concern that things could slide. That's especially true as we get some energy into the snowpack from the sun. Just be a bit careful until things settle down. But it's a nice day to ski some powder, so get out there! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday's warming is over; we got some rain from the late afternoon into the night, even pretty heavy around 7, but the moon came out around 10 and the rain stopped. Light snow has been falling this morning, although it's stopped at the moment. Things look like they could change, though; the Coast Guard info shows some very strong winds offshore coming in from the northwest and west. I was just about to write that that could bring some good things, and sure enough the snow has suddenly really picked up here (yea!). It's looking good, so I hope we'll have a snow report with lots of snow in it tomorrow. Just keep an eye on the wind today, as the gondolas and some of the top lifts sometimes stop in high wind. All OK at the moment, though. We need the snow; look at the decline in snowpack at the resorts. Actually saw some grass poking up on the runs yesterday.... A real Myoko day: 50+cm of fresh, an evening of snow so thick it looks like fog; and that fantastic feeling under the boots, with soft snow up to the ankles. And it continues to snow this morning, although the sun keeps trying to make an appearance. We've also had a few moments of major gusts and blinding snow, although things are pretty calm at the moment. Should be an excellent day for skiing! A quick test of snow quality (thanks to the snowthrower - don't scoff; it really does give me a good chance to sort of test out the snow density and flake types) says things could be a bit heavy offpiste. Should be fine with steeper slopes (although sluffs are possible - go one by one!), but it could be a bit of a grind on more gentle terrain. Downhill trail busting, anyone?
