We've gotten a few cm since last night, at least, and it looks like it might be picking up a bit now. And today is the first day of lift operations at both Suginohara and Akakura Onsen—the rascals snuck in on us there. The season has now officially (if somewhat quietly) begun! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 70cm Snowfall at base this season 271cm Posted on Monday 15th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another late report here, thanks primarily to the last of the bonenkai—end of the year parties; they never stop—and the fact that once I got some coffee in it was time to go blow more snow. According to the highly accurate measure-the-leg-with-a-ruler method, we had another 70cm or so. Some blowing today might have added to that, but it was another good fall. More than the 10cm that Akakura Onsen reported. It seems that Suginohara has decided to stay open on the weekdays this week as well. Maybe it's all this snowfall (and maybe people are out there on the lifts!). Anyway, it's a good start to the season, with some solid snowfall - and it was pretty solid snow today—more water than earlier falls. Akakura Onsen: 170cm, -1/-3° Kumado No. 1, 4, 5 lifts Myoko Suginohara: 180cm, -3/-8° Gondola only, today, then back next weekend Myoko Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 15th December 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 271cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 7 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 90cm (14th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 271cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Myoko. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's cold and clear, at least for the moment, here in Myoko. Smelly, too; the conditions are bringing down sulfur fumes from the vent on the south side of Mt. Myoko, but that should go away with either wind or a little more warmth. Clouds are forming out to the north, and the national weather report does point to the likelihood of a little more snow through the day. Either way, it's a nice day out there with a good covering of fresh snow from yesterday. I'm guessing on some of the snow depths here; I assume at least 30cm fell at Akakan (come on resorts! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A sunny Merry Christmas in Myoko! The mountain is really white this morning, after a pretty good, not overly heavy fall overnight. The snowpack is building up very nicely - let's not forget that a lot of times we're really iffy if it's going to be a white Christmas or not. This year, no problem. A couple of days of sun here, it appears, before it gets really cold into the weekend, with more snow coming. It's not exactly warm yet today, either; Suginohara is reporting -12°C at the upper gondola station. For those who might moan, though, think about what warm winds would do to the snow.... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . No official snow reports to put in here, but I have to get out and into the woods today. Not a lot of additional snow, after a really good fall of probably 30-40cm. Luckily, the really high winds that were predicted have not hit yet, although the cold is here. It was -5C by the car thermometer, which never fails (seriously, it's always right on the mark. Ah, Japanese technology). Everything is definitely in full swing now, as the few lifts that haven't been moving should be starting up (especially Tangram and Madarao). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A later than normal report today, but it's only because it's a great day out there and I had to get out on the slopes. Well, I had some work on the slopes that I was late getting up for.... but more than all of that, I thought the report would benefit from the time out there. Honest! It is very sunny this morning, lots of people out there on the slopes (including the kid snowboarder who ran right into me). A little caution because the weekend warriors are out in force. It's busy. Great snow, though, and it's still -2° even with a very warm sun. It's a bit foggy at base level and up as well, although it seems to be lifting at the moment. Glad to see the snow, after we had a little bit of light rain last night. I could be completely selfish and not say that yesterday's snow in the hills was absolutely perfect: settled snow with a deep layer perfect, fresh snow crystals glittering on top. I could no that, and tell you it was terrible and you might as well go somewhere else, and keep that great snow for ourselves. But I do have my journalistic standards of truth to uphold. OK, it was great, and it's still snowing. The spring scare of last week can now officially be forgotten - although we could still use a little bigger base for late-spring skiing. There are no resort snow reports in yet, and I'm guessing it's pretty nice and cold (haven't switched on the car this morning, which is, of course, my finest source of local temperature). I have to head out early today, so add a few centimeters of good snow to the figures below. Otherwise, a lot is the same as yesterday; winter is back and we couldn't be happier (well, not much). Very fine snow is also falling, adding to the 20cm plus we had yesterday. It's kind of funny when Tokyo gets more snow than Myoko, but this has been an interesting year. In short, a really good day for being out there on this day before a holiday. Hopefully some of our domestic travelers took today off for a nice four-day weekend. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . As I was waiting for the official town snow reports to come in (reluctantly not having a skiing day today), I was going to say the wind is finally down. They're not. Really nice snow is falling; big flakes, just drifting down gently until a few minutes ago and then: back to horizontal snowfall. On piste, the worst thing is that gondolas may not be running all the time. Oh, yeah, it will be cold on your face, but you're here to ski so suck it up! Get out and ski! Actually, looking out the window again, these big gusts mean wind chill will be a factor; balaclavas are highly recommended! In the backcountry, though, things are very dodgy. I heard some reports of pretty shaken people coming off the hill yesterday after setting off some small slides, and the complex terrain in the Myoko backcountry can make course decisions pretty difficult. The Avalanche Network issued an overall warning/advisory yesterday, so this is another day to really think twice about going, even if you think you're knowledgeable; don't even think about going at all if you don't have gear and experience and partners who are reliable and cool-headed. Practice your powder turns on the slopes.
