  • Myoko Now: Sunday 14th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 90cm Snowfall at base this season 201cm Posted on Sunday 14th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . This would have been a nice, early report if it weren't for the (dramatic pause, please) nearly one meter of snow that fell overnight. Thanks to my highly sensitive testing methods - ruler on the leg up to the snow level point, discovered as the snowthrower cut through the drifts - I found 95cm of snow on the driveway. Some from yesterday was there; let's say 90cm of fresh. And it's still snowing. Looks like we're getting 2cm or more every hour. Traffic will be terrible, especially along the coast with the north wind picking up right now. But that's nothing, when it looks so great (and with skiing to do soon....) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow is falling this morning, although not (yet) the heavy fall that was forecast as possible for the day. We've gotten a few cm since last night, at least, and it looks like it might be picking up a bit now. And today is the first day of lift operations at both Suginohara and Akakura Onsen—the rascals snuck in on us there. The season has now officially (if somewhat quietly) begun! • Myoko Now: Monday 15th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 70cm Snowfall at base this season 271cm Posted on Monday 15th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another late report here, thanks primarily to the last of the bonenkai—end of the year parties; they never stop—and the fact that once I got some coffee in it was time to go blow more snow. According to the highly accurate measure-the-leg-with-a-ruler method, we had another 70cm or so. Some blowing today might have added to that, but it was another good fall. More than the 10cm that Akakura Onsen reported. It seems that Suginohara has decided to stay open on the weekdays this week as well. Maybe it's all this snowfall (and maybe people are out there on the lifts!). Anyway, it's a good start to the season, with some solid snowfall - and it was pretty solid snow today—more water than earlier falls. • Nozawa Now: Tuesday 30th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 437cm Posted on Tuesday 30th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Another mixed bunch of weather for us today I think. It was snowing lightly earlier, but stopped now. Just cloudy though some breaks in said clouds with a bit of blue sky around. Could it clear up? The forecast is for snow showers from time to time during the day, so we'll just have to see how it develops. Resort reports up to 10cm on upper slopes this morning with just a dusting lower down. Tomorrow we have a decent chance of seeing some sun, but later on in the day and into New Years Day we are still looking at a weather system that will come and potentially give us a substantial amount of snow. It looks like the planned gondola starting time of 8:10 isn't going to happen this morning as they do some kind of work on them and they might get a bit late even. Hopefully they can get to their early time for tomorrow. Lift operations for the New Year. On the following days, lifts are scheduled to open 30 minutes earlier than usual with the lower lifts starting at 8am and the Gondolas starting up at 8:10am: Tuesday 30th December (delay expected today unfortunately) Wednesday 31st December Friday 2nd December Saturday 3rd December Nighta at the Nagasaka area will be open from 4:30pm until 11:30pm on Wednesday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 557cm Posted on Saturday 3rd January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . How about a bit more snow? How about 30+cm? Yes, once again we have another thick layer of fresh snow this morning to add to what was already out there. After the lovely weather conditions we had for lots of the day yesterday, it's almost a surprise but of course another good one. As I write this report the snow is still coming down and it looks like it will be poor visibility out on the runs this morning. The snowfall is expected to ease today and still for conditions to get milder from tomorrow, maybe the sun featuring on Monday. Then back to snow around Tuesday. We may well have been disappointed at times last season, but this is the kind of masses of snow that we expect in Nozawa. To think that it's only New Year as well. Hopefully it isn't doing most of it's snowing up front and we'll get regular topups through the season. Today is the last day for the lifts opening 30 minutes earlier than normal for the New Year holidays, so back to normal times tomorrow morning. • Nozawa Now: Friday 2nd January 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 527cm Posted on Friday 2nd January 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . A bit of sunshine and quite a lot of blue sky this morning actually. There's still a fair amount of cloud around but it's really nice conditions this morning here in Nozawa. Can actually see where you're going! And there's lots more snow to enjoy as well with the top areas of the resort reporting over 50cm of fresh snowfall once again over the last 24 hours. Check the numbers below. Yamabiko now officially on 3.5m snow depth. It's a cold start again so that extra layer is still very much needed. It should start getting slightly less cold from tomorrow and then more so on Sunday and Monday when we will probably (maybe?) have lots of sunshine to enjoy. Local forecast says maybe a bit of snow later on today. Back to fresh snowfall around Tuesday? Yes... things are good. Tomorrow (Saturday) is the last day for the lifts opening 30 minutes earlier than normal for the New Year holidays. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning and hello from Nozawa. We've got more snow this morning to report, between 20-40cm according to the resort and there's definitely a good new layer of snow to shovel outside here in the village too. Light snow expected today especially on higher slopes, maybe some sun tomorrow along with cloud. More snow over the weekend. Glad to see that it seems set to remain cold so snow conditions should be a keeper. This coming Monday, the 12th, is a national holiday here in Japan and there'll be a few events happening at Nozawa. Including a 'mochi-tsuki taikai' event hosted by everyone's favourite vegetable Nasuki, over at the Hikage Information Centre at 10:30am and 2pm. No less exciting is the 7:50am start by the Nagasaka Gondola to take lucky people up for first tracks. Or so it the resort tells me. That one sounds good. As the coming weekend is a 3 day long one, it's one of the peak weekends of the season so expect a fair few people here in Nozawa. Glad that we can move on from yesterday, which was unfortunately blighted with rain. Happily it turned into snowfall, and result of which is up to 15cm being reported by the resort on the slopes. It's nice and cold again this morning as well which is much better than the milder conditions we experienced yesterday. Less wind this morning and all lifts are apparently back moving as they should. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It's a busy peak season Sunday of course and lots of people around here in Nozawa. Just a bit of snow really since yesterday with the numbers reported by the resort yesterday afternoon and this morning added below. It's a cloudy start to the day here but snow is expected later on and the potential for a fair bit as well overnight. So I look forward to being able to report that tomorrow. It would be good if we were on receiving end of a good chunk of fresh snow because after tomorrow we are expecting a run of sunny days and it might get a bit milder. Hopefully not too much. • Nozawa Now: Saturday 27th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 435cm Posted on Saturday 27th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I have more snow to report from Nozawa this morning. There was snowfall during the day yesterday and add that to the numbers posted by the resort this morning and we'll have close to another 50cm on the upper areas of the resort. Deep enough? I actually heard someone last night complain that it was 'too deep'. Not often you hear that in the world is it. But at the very least another 20+cm right across the mountain, making for always-fresh conditions wherever you choose to ride. I read this in another report, but it's true --- conditions couldn't be much better than they are. After that slight delay what a fantastic start to the season - can the rest of the season continue on from here in the same way? Light snow continued to fall into early morning but it has stopped here for now. Still limited visibility out there, but it will likely begin to clear this morning. Will be cold overnight tonight but warm up a bit tomorrow with the expected sunshine. More snow should be back by New Year though, don't worry! Wednesday is, of course, New Years Eve and there'll be a few events going on to celebrate and bring in the new year. First of all nighta at the Nagasaka area will be open from 4:30pm until 11:30pm on Wednesday. There'll be sake and hot wine to sample from 11pm until midnight and once the New Year arrives there'll be a firework display. Sounds like fun! • Nozawa Now: Friday 26th December 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 60cm Snowfall at base this season 415cm Posted on Friday 26th December 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Hello from Nozawa and it's one of those exciting mornings when I get to report silly amounts of new snowfall. So it was snowing yesterday and there was 10-20cm reported over the mountain by the resort (that's the numbers in the brackets below in the 'fresh snow' bit). This morning they report 60cm of fresh on Yamabiko, 70cm on Uenotaira, 45cm on Hikage and Nagasaka and 40cm on Karasawa. Doing a bit of sums, I make that a haul of 90cm on Uenotaira since yesterday. ! I can confirm there has been definitely over 50cm here at base, and I have the prospect of going to have to go out and shovel it around after I post this report. Oh the troubles of living in Nozawa! Buy yes, forget trying to get exact the numbers are just... big. There's a ton of snow out there again and it will be deep this morning. Visibility is limited on the upper mountain areas in particular. Goes without saying that while it's totally expected to be stoked by the powder out there, don't get over-excited. Take care. Safety! What's more, things aren't busy yet. Well they sure didn't seem to be yesterday and this morning seems about the same from what I can see. I expect things to start getting busy from tomorrow and as we approach the New Year holidays. The sun might join us tomorrow as well with a run of clearer days lined up, and a bit milder too. December 2014 is treating us well. Let's hope the other months of the season deliver as well.
