Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 15cm
Snowfall at base this season 1003cm

Posted on Tuesday 11th March 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

It's clear and very white in Myoko this morning.

No official reports in yet, but I have work to do and a report to file, so I'll say we had about 15cm overnight on top of the 25 or so yesterday. To be honest, the resorts' reports aren't all that helpful; we're still seeing some saying they're losing snow when others are adding fresh to the count. Overall I guess they give a pretty good sense of where we are, and thankfully the snowpack has recovered from our earlier bouts with rain and wind.

The avalanche danger definitely is higher today, with lots of wind loading the past three days (there are plumes blowing off the peaks this morning as well). Be very careful on lee slopes, as pillows of wind-blown snow are almost certainly out there and ready to break. And today's hint: carry a good map. We almost had another rescue on Saturday, with a skier going off of Suginohara and ending up, drenched, in a stream at the bottom of a valley. Luckily his emergency call gave police a good triangulation and he was found by the resort's snowcat. It's likely he would have had at the very best a cold, cold night. We won't think about the worst (just glad he's OK).
